HuskyPup on the Bama site does some pretty good breakdowns. This might be one of my favorites

“Here is a breakdown of Kevin Steele's history as a defensive coordinator, with the annual ranking in yards/play defense.

2007 - Alabama - 37
2008 - Alabama - 5 (also LB coach)
2009 - Clemson - 11
2010 - Clemson - 20
2011 - Clemson - 71 (Fired after 70-33 loss to WVU in bowl. Interestingly Clemson tried to claim he left for other opportunities, but no one hired him, which goes to show why you can't take HCs including Dabo at their word.)
2012 - Unemployed
2013 - Bama off-field role
2014 - Bama LB coach (Ragland as JR, DePriest as SR)
2015 - LSU - 33 (also LB coach for Deion Jones and Kendell Beckwith - this was actually a very talented defense)
2016 - Auburn - 24
2017 - Auburn - 8
2018 - Auburn - 34
2019 - Auburn - 17
2020 - Auburn - 60
2021 - Tennessee (10 day stint between Pruitt and Heupel)
2022 - Miami - 103

The track record is... not good, to be honest. He's been a DC for 12 years, averaged a 35th ranked defense, and fielded a top-15 defense just 3 times. In general, his defenses statistically regressed, and 25% of his defenses finished 60th+. Even in his best years, his defenses were at best commensurate with his talent level.

In comparison, this is Golding:
2019 - 15
2020 - 20
2021 - 11
2022 - 4

It's hard to really argue for Steele as an upgrade at DC in comparison to Golding. Really nothing, statistically, bears that out. The biggest argument I'd make for him is that he is an extremely experienced LB coach with almost 20 years experience at that position before taking over DC at Bama in 2007. Personally, I view him as a solid LB coach, not really a viable DC candidate, but that's just me.”

Steele isn't going to scheme up medicore or bad talent, but he's pretty solid at putting really good talent in the right places and getting them to do simple jobs well and do them without thinking.....which was a major problem for us the last few years.

I'd imagine that's why he was on Saban's list, even if he was 3-4 names down it. I'm sure the top couple guys were experienced guys who both had the play fast and fundamental AND could mix stuff up a little more, but we didn't get them. So when it came to the next group, he clearly wanted this and not super smart Xs and Os coach who might not be very good at communicating that well. It's not exciting and it might not work, but that's pretty clearly the thought process.
