Saban's DCs at Bama have all also been the ILB coach, and I think Kevin Steele was the only one who had preexisting experience as an ILB coach. Smart moved to DBs briefly when they hired James Willis, but moved back after he left.

Smart, Pruitt, and Golding all are from DB backgrounds who coached ILBs at Bama, as well as being the DC. I think it's kinda prepping them for the job and getting them out of their comfort zone.

Tosh Lupoi was a DL coach by trade and was Co-DC/OLB Coach, but most will tell you that he wasn't calling plays or being valued for his coaching knowledge.
