The defender was trying to stop something like this from happening at the end of overtime:

In this picture, the initial tackler needed assistance to stop the score. Besides playing 2-hand touch, how exactly should a second defender move in to stop the runner AND hit him in the 30% of his body that is legal to hit given the .001 seconds he has to work with?

By not diving in with your head down and making contact with the crown of his helmet. That's a good way to cause severe injury to your neck or spine. It's not all about helmet to helmet contact.

You can dive and keep your face up. It's not that hard to keep your head up.

Take a look at the Shazier video. That's why the rule is in place. He tackled alot by diving crown first into runner, and it finally got him.

That's why diving with the crown of the helmet is part of the targeting rule.

Yeah, it's a rough game and that's why we love it. But proper technique is important for health and safety.

I just have the feeling also, that if tge teams were reversed last night, people wouldn't be bitching near as much.
