The truth is that the 4 team playoff already killed the regular season / bowl system irreparably.

It absolutely murdered bowls...all of them outside of the designated playoff bowls, no question about that.

I believe the regular season was largely kept intact, at the least in terms of the gravity of a loss. Moving to twelve will undoubtedly change that, and I hate it, however we don't have much choice at this point b/c the playoff train as left the station.

An expanded playoff helps the sport and hopefully it gets rid of these 6-6 type bowls. Maybe these players will stop opting out.

A great regular season requires a balance of every loss having consequences while not so crushing that there is nothing left to play for. The reduced standing of the bowl games knocked that balance out of alignment and the 12 team playoff became a necessary evil to fix it.

A perfect scenario would be a 4 team playoff with a still meaningful bowl system, but that didn't happen.
