I think we have seen the high watermark of what Oats is capable of at Alabama. It's not nothing: SEC regular season and tourney titles, sweet 16 berths.

Still, on the 2nd weekend he's going to run into teams with craftier coaches who have spent a week diagnosing his offense and have the recipe to short circuit it. UCLA and SDSU played out very similarly tbh. Teams that did a good job of controlling tempo, limiting 3pt shots, and defending the rim.

Oats is not going to change so we're basically only ever get over this hump if we have the nuts flush roster:

A great defensive forward (Herb Jones/Clowney)

A great scoring wing (Brandon Miller)

-- And the piece we've yet to have --

A physical combo guard who attacks the rims like Dwyane Wade.

Our guards are just too soft at the rim for this offense to work. They do not force bad contact by the defenders to garner FTs.

That's the only way I see this working in the 2nd weekend and beyond in the tourney.

Let me clarify my comment here: Our guards are too soft for this offense to work in the advance stages of the postseason. You've got to have tougher guards to run this offense and we've simply not had those kind of dogs. If we're not going to shoot mid-range pull-up jumpers to keep defenders honest, we damn sure need a guard that is wearing knee pads and elbow pads out there because he's going to spend half the game falling awkwardly on the court drawing physical contact at the rim.
