For some of our younger posters:
quote:

Dooley grew up in Mobile, Alabama and attended McGill. He also served as an infantry officer in the United States Marine Corps.

He's a graduate of Auburn, where he played football and later coached under Shug Jordan, before being hired as head coach at Georgia.

After the 1980 national championship season, Vince Dooley was offered the head coaching position at Auburn, encouraged by his former Auburn teammate and Alabama Governor Fob James. However, Dooley eventually declined the job, which went to Georgia alumnus Pat Dye.

A true southern gentleman through-and-through.

Thanks for sharing this quote.

I knew in a general sense who Vince was, but didn't know that he went to Auburn and that Dye went to Georgia.

That's some funny shite.

One of the esteemed Paul Finebaum's first articles in the Birmingham Post-Herald was a front page story in Dec 1980 saying Dooley was returning to Auburn to replace Doug Barfield.
