For backup - if you can't get agreement with Lane -
I think they quickly move to Lanning then to James Franklin.
Sure seems like Freeze is out, and I don't think you can hire a coordinator at this point like Grimes.
Probably end up with public admin/booster war for Freeze.

It does seem like Kiffin and Saban are pretty good friends
(although below the level of Saban/Kirby). I could see Saban throwing out little suggestions not to take the Auburn job. The relationship doesn't work in Auburn's favor.
Probably cares more about Saban than Ole Miss (anything Ole Miss has to offer is non factor vs Auburn).

Here's to hoping Dabo is the just the backup to the backup.
Pretty solid.
I'm sure Cohen is leading extra fine background checks on primary candidates (thus the need for backups). Nothing would be more embarrassing than to have an unexpected skeleton pop up on your first hire.

I refuse to believe anyone turns down 7 years (min) at $10 million (min).
If Freeze gets it, certain boosters were never going to offer an appropriate amount to Kiffin (to ensure Freeze).
Or maybe Ryan Day is just thinking he's going to lose Saturday.

For today, Auburn has lost and Cohen has failed miserably.
With UA, UGA, LSU, and UT all at or undoubtedly trending to high levels, Auburn needed to capture an opportunity for a spark.

The thing we're now hitting is that Kiffin was the most "everyone is on board" hire... at this point other candidates are coming off the board and/or have issues that will divide people.
Kiffin
Rhule - GONE - I think people would have liked him but gone now.
Dabo - Bammer and unrealistic
Freeze - Morality issues
Urban - Morality issues
Johnson - I personally dislike this hire. Has never been a head coach. He's been a college coach before but not a head coach.
Fickell - likely GONE - Not from the southeast. If he does well here likely jumps to Ohio State at some point.
Prime - No big time coaching experience. Would be high risk high reward
Franklin - Would he come back down south? I think some also just don't like him for whatever reason.

Just to play devil's advocate on "Roberts and Cohen won't hire Freeze"
- No need to leak Freeze yesterday. This was a common sense
2nd name for all the media
- Cohen and Roberts probably don't want Freeze, but it seems a portion of the power brokers really, really want Freeze, and have for a long time. Would Cohen and Roberts directly contradict this, and introduce immediate dislike. I don't believe they have enough incentive to do so.
- I do believe a large portion of the protest/outrage/reaction would be a zero by Monday mid day or Tuesday. There will always be a 25% fringe - most Auburn folks will rightfully view this 25% fringe as weird and not desirable.
- meanwhile, they can put in a last ditch effort for Kiffin

I haven’t heard PJ Fleck mentioned this time around. He’s the guy I wanted when we hired Harsin. He makes $5M per year and has a $10M buyout (drops to $7.5 on Jan. 1). Would anybody else be happy to see his name surface as a target?

The continued and constant vitriol towards Freeze is strange. Beating a dead horse. Go after Cohen and Roberts if you hate the move. They had over a month.
If Freeze is a disaster, or even mediocre (probably), he will be gone within 2 years. And no Auburn won't fall into some black hole. They'll be bad until they aren't - like UT. All the money talk, buy outs, etc is just play money. Look up the net worth of the boosters. Just glad they actually support football.
