Just so I understand:

SC calls Clemson "taters"
Clemson calls SC "coots"

HOW did these terms come about?

When Clemsuck's booster program started it was (and still is) called IPTAY, which stood for I pay $30 a year. But since Clemson was an Ag school they could pay in all sorts of things, like produce. So SC fans started calling it, "I pay taters a year."

A coot is a type of ground dwelling waterfowl in the Rail family (Gruiformes). I guess some sheep molester thought it looked like a fighting rooster. They aren't very smart so it's understandable.
