2004 would have been one hell of a playoff:

1. USC vs 4. Texas
2. Oklahoma vs 3. Auburn

The only problem would have been an undefeated Utah program in the mix causing a lot of naysaying about the “true” champion, but the playoff itself would have been fun to watch.

Absolutely. I would stop short of saying Auburn would win it, but they would have put up a better fight than Oklahoma. A playoff that year might have gone down as the best overall playoff. The biggest problem would have been the aftermath of USC.

Everyone claims this but does nothing to offer any proof. It's easy to say with the benefit of hindsight that Oklahoma didn't deserve to be in that game. However, what is forgotten is the fact that there was an awful lot of hype surrounding that game - similar to the hype Texas and USC got prior to the Rose Bowl. After a quarter of play it looked like it was going to be a back and forth contest. But then Oklahoma muffed a punt which gave USC the ball deep inside Oklahoma territory. That made the score 21-7 and USC never looked back as they scored 24 points in the second period to take a 38-10 lead into the locker room.
