Because when your pod rotates to the pod you have a permanent game with that game has to be replaced by another conference game. Because every team has a permanent cross pod game the schedules aren't as flexible.
It's doable but more complicated.

If you have a fixed opponent from each of the three other pods this becomes a non issue and preserves rivalry games
