Standing amid traffic got player noticed by cops
Pro, ex-Dog, charged

Athens-Clarke police were more concerned with 23-year-old Danny Ware's drunken conduct early Sunday than they were impressed with his Super Bowl ring.

Officers arrested the world champion New York Giants running back on an alcohol charge downtown as he and other Georgia Bulldog fans wallowed in the aftermath of Saturday night's defeat by the Crimson Tide of Alabama.

The 41-30 loss knocked down third-ranked Georgia several pegs, to 11th.

Ware, a Georgia football standout, was drafted last year by the NFL Tennessee Titans, claimed on waivers by the New York Jets, then signed by the Giants two months before their Super Bowl victory over the New England Patriots in February.

Ware and a 24-year-old Dallas woman attracted a police officer's attention about 2:25 a.m. Sunday on East Clayton Street because they seemed oblivious to traffic that had to steer around them as they stood in the street talking, according to police.

Although the woman explained they were trying to flag down a cab, she and Ware had their backs to oncoming traffic near North Jackson Street, according to an officer's report, which noted the officer's patrol car passed within inches of the couple.

Ware and 24-year-old Jennifer Leigh Henderson insisted they were not in the road - even as they stood in the road talking to the officer, according to the report.

Ware admitted that he'd been drinking, and a breath test showed he had a blood-alcohol content of 0.152 grams, police said.

Henderson refused to take a breath test, police said.

Each was charged with pedestrian under the influence and pedestrian in the roadway.

Ware, who had Georgia decals on each cheek when he was booked into Clarke County Jail, posted a $250 cash bond and was released about 9:45 a.m. Sunday.

The Rockmart native gave police a Cedartown address when he was arrested.

Henderson, who told officers she was a Wachovia employee from Dallas, was booked into jail with an address on Manhattan's East Side.

The Giants signed Ware last December.
