I remember quite distinctly Pearl going out of his way to tell us JJ Pegues was someone Steven wanted and recruited.
He was.......but Steven didn't go out on his own. He had to get Bruce's approval.
He missed on that one. Every HC misses on people they want recruited.
Since you want to cherry pick............

Former head coach Bruce Pearl publicly credited his son, Steven, for successfully identifying and recruiting Broome, referring to him as finding a "diamond in the Transfer Portal". The recruitment involved a direct battle with SEC rival Florida and its new coach, Todd Golden, who was a former Auburn assistant himself.

Bruce gave him appoval when he put Steven in charge of portal recruiting.

I was not even cherry picking or pointing out a miss. I was discussing his latitude of discretion that Steven held as evidenced by Bruce's praise.

Not worried about Stephen at all. I think Bruce loses the same games as Stephen does with this roster. We may have lost by slightly less against the big guys, but it wouldn't be incredibly different. Houston could've been a win, but we were some foul calls or a tip in away from winning that anyway.
BP had our team in cycles of being just decent to good to really good based on the roster and who we were able to land. BP was a few recruits away from having some truly elite teams a LOT (Green, Scoot, keeping Cooper another year, etc.). Most of those teams ended up just being good/BP's average.
This year's roster just had too much turnover to be on the better side of the Pearl's averages IMO. And if this team starts to get used to playing together/plays some better defense, this squad could still get better.

Yes, the "interim" tag for a year would have done wonders for recruiting.
...........or maybe you hire a guy who is familiar with our program and keep the entire staff that has been the most successful in the history of Auburn basketball?
We are literally watching the flaws of your logic play out in real time with the football team. Keeping Durkin did not retain one of the best defenses Auburn has fielded since 2019. Recruiting is about money now regardless of the coach.
