Herb Waldrop was an Auburn man through and through. He was affable, easy going and caring man. He was a fixture in Auburn athletics and will be missed.

I had the pleasure to work for him with the Intramural Department. I have to relate one story about him and the student managers. He called us into his office to ask about trying to find out who was damaging the Max Morris Drill Field, since it was the Intramural fields during that time. He propped his feet up onto the desk, puffing on his cigar. He finished the stogie and pitched into the trashcan by the desk.
Since he was blind in his right eye, he did not notice the smoke that started to rise from the trashcan a few minutes later. The managers bit their lips as Herb kept talking about the Drill field. When he finished his talk, he looked over at the trash, which was now billowing smoke. He yelled at us for not stopping his speech sooner, as we burst out laughing. We grabbed the trashcan and put it outside the old Quonset Hut

My memory of Auburn will always have Hub Waldrop in it.

Not only blind, but had a fake eye - leading to a story my dad (student trainer) always told.

Hub would have different trainers travel to the games and they’d share a hotel room. He’d get a good laugh with each rookie as he’d get ready for bed, put his keys and wallet on the night stand, then pop his prosthetic out and say “I like to keep an eye on my money” as his roommate stared at him in shock.

The Auburn Family and the world as a whole lost a great one. RIP.
