Not personally but her and her husband at the time bought a friend off mine's house iirc for their kid. Meet the husband at Jim Bobs. We used to be regulars at Jim Bob's when we lived nearby in opelika. They changed their fries and we moved to Auburn so we rarely go anymore. That's as close as I got.
I thought he chucks on Shug closed down after a fire.

I don't remember any serious kind of fire. I thought it shut down because the guy running it (had worked for Chuck) let the quality go downhill and business tapered off. It has been a few things since, like Mama Q's (which was good) and is now Sheila C's hamburger place.

Maybe someone can answer this - Did Chuck's move at some time in the distant past? Circa 1983, I recall what I thought was Chuck's not far off Opelika Road and not far past the big mall. The current building looks like the building for the Chuck's that I remember. Kind of had either a mustardy sauce or mustard slaw. EDIT - after reading page 2, the "hole in the wall" behind Mandarin House sounds like the Chuck's I knew.
I really liked the ribs at Mike and Ed's. Country's still has one of the best baked beans sides I've had anywhere. I don't get back very often, so of the new places, I've only tried Moe's, and I know Full Moon from B'ham stops.

That was the original Chuck's in the Auburn/Opelika area. There is a taco place there now. Chuck built a standalone building on Geneva Street in Opelika (the one on Shug Jordan is almost identical) and that's where Chuck's BBQ is now.
I liked Mike and Ed's too. I think there is still a M&E's in Phenix City, but I have not been to it.
Country's barbeque has improved.
I always forget about Full Moon. They just seem inconsistent to me. Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's not at all, so I've kind of written them off. Moe's is consistently good, especially their turkey and chicken and ribs.

Ate at Country's last week. That place is run down and nasty. I hear they are building a new building where the old King Honda was. Much needed....

we used to go to Country's for all you can eat rib night - I'm pretty sure they were beef ribs and we'd get the waitress to bag up the bones to take home to our dogs.
slight tangent - I worked a second job at Autosport in Opelika detailing cars after the body work and painting was done. Dave King and his Honda dealership was one of our biggest customers. The new cars that would come off the car carrier with dents and dings would get fixed up at Autosport. Dave King was an a-hole. He bought his son a bright purple 4 Runner and he wrecked it 3 times in the first few months he had it and we fixed it every time.

Personally, I love tangents.
For reference, I was born in Auburn in 1970. Dad was a Botany Professor in Funchess from '68 - '97. The Botany / Microbiology faculty and friends used to play pool at the WESC on Friday nights for many years. He'd come home smelling of beer (he was a diabetic and never drank too much) and quite often, silver quarters. He was always on the look out for silver quarters, dimes and half dollars.
The earliest BBQ place I can remember was Papa Joe's (IIRC), a little small brick building (shack - classic BBQ joint) past Midway Plaza on the left at the bottom of the hill, near the Saugahatchee Creek bridge. It was run by an old black man and the BBQ was supposedly very good. This was still the early 70's and I can only guess that white and black customers and BBQ places catered to different customers, but from what I remember regardless of color or anything, Papa Joe made good BBQ.
Then Country's, Chuck's and the BBQ House all opened at about the same time in the late 70's. My sister and I loved Country's and the HUGE rocking chair and tea served in Ball Mason jars. In Cahoots, just getting started played there almost weekly, and they were made up of mostly Botany / Micro faculty and friends. Will Blevins, Richard Shelby and Lynn Hammond come to mind. Lynn is still singing around Auburn, last I heard from her daughter Audra.
It seems like I went to Country's a few years ago for old times sake when I was back home with my kids to let them spend some time in the rocking chair. I don't remember what I ordered, I guess just a basic plate, but I wasn't impressed with the food and the place felt run-down and a bit dirty TBH. Still, it was good to be back inside Country's. Lots of memories and I hope they get everything fixed up. It has always been a great location and it does have a lot of history as one of Auburn's first BBQ restaurants.
On a slight tangent - I almost got into the thread about your go to food / restaurant while at Auburn, but I didn't know where to start. As I kid, we usually went to Shoney's when it was located just past Midway Plaza, Morrison's Cafeteria in the Village Mall when it was built (I came to love their egg custard Pie), Mr. Gatti's across from the Village Mall (played my first Space Invaders and Asteroids there), Red Lobster (popcorn shrimp) on occasion. I guess that was through the mid-80's until my sister graduated from AHS in'84 and me in '88 and we didn't go out to eat as a family as often.
In college, I worked at the old Domino's on the corner of College and Thach, so I ate more pizza than most people do in their life. Especially pepperoni - still don't care for it. After Domino's, I worked / delivered for Surf'n'Subs mainly and Brand X Pizza when they needed help occasionally - both were started by ex-Domino's friends - we all basically quit en masse when we got a new dickhead manager named Matt.
I went to Touchdown's on my 21st birthday with my 18 year old girlfriend with an obvious fake ID, but Johntini Allanson served us up right, at the bar, and I started working there 3 weeks later until I moved to Japan in December '94.
Touchdowns was a lot of fun and we had a pretty good menu. Great wings. Gamedays were hell (same for Domino's). We played a lot of pool at Momma Goldbergs over pitchers. Lots of Momma Loves. It was owned and run by the Dement family. Youngest son Jay, an outstanding wrestler in high school, same class, worked there often and kept us fed and drunk. I had 2 roommates that worked at Subway and kept me fed. I guess I got by on mostly pizza, BBQ, Taco Bell, Guthries and TDs kitchen food (and lots of drinking during / after work).
