And how did our football program bounce back after those two years?

You're acting like this is the end of the world and we'll never be profitable in football again. It's ridiculous.

What were the records of the two HCs we hired? How much did we pay them comparable to the top HCs in college football?

As opposed to acting like most AU posters here, that we can just go out and hire 'the next Nick Saban', pay him $6 million a year and turn into a perennial BCSC contender.

Honestly, how likely is that scenario?

So Auburn should start playing in the Sunbelt conference then.

Why is that unlikely? Why set your goals so low?

We have top-notch facilities, great recruiting area and big $. As Auburn fans, we need drop the aiming-low thinking. There is absolutely no reason that the right coach/AD combo couldn't have us competing for the SEC annually.

It's unlikely because there isn't another Nick Saban out there.

Give Bama credit, they went after the most qualified guy in coaching and offered him what he wanted. But I can't think of a single guy in the country with similar qualifications AND who's willing to take what would have to be considered a step down, career-wise.

The only NFL guy out there right now who can match Saban's qualifications in '07 is Pete Carroll, and he seems pretty happy at Seattle.

Bama got lucky, in that Saban was miserable in the NFL and wanted back in the college game, but only at a 'name' school like Bama.
