Not true, he was publicly announced as one of the interviewed candidates back when "insiders" were all saying Kirby had already agreed to terms.
When they announced gus, it was like, oh ok. Safe pick, lets see how this plays out.

Indiana’s HC Tom Allen
This would be interesting....He's coached under Freeze and Taggart. He made Indiana competitive in 3 years, (not that the Big 10 is super strong right now). He has made some recruiting headway. He's changed the persona of IU football. They expect to win, that hasn't really been a thing for them since the Bill Mallory coached teams of the early 90's.
Would he be ready for the SEC? Thats a good question. Boom or bust kinda hire.

Steele has already proven he isn't HCing material. We have done went down the road of hiring great coordinators with little or awful HCing experiences. Just look at our last 2 hires.
It's like the powers that be don't even care about finding someone that has proven themselves to be good HCs for more than a year or at all.

I didn’t follow things as closely but Gus was the least surprising thing I could have imagined at the time

This is their bread and butter. They (just like this site if you notice my join date) know that this is their moment to seize new subscribers. Unfortunately, they don't know shite, but that doesn't stop them.
When it comes to AU insiders, Keef Kneebur is the best

quote:Check out the "Flashback to 2012" thread. Starting about page 23, right as the official announcement that Chiz had been fired on 11/25/12.
he was not on anyone's top three.
Gustav was always one of the top three names mentioned.
Here's an allin2010 post from the first 24 hours that sums it up:
quote:
Coaching searches are crazy... I had some inside info about JJ staying, TJ being re-assigned, and Chizik being fired.(yes I missed the actual date, but that was just a change in the announcement date).. On the coaching search, I HAVE ZERO inside information.. But from other sources, work down the list this way:
Fisher: No real negatives, consensus pick. He will have to tell us no (Sunday or Monday)
Petrino: Contract includes a blond and a Harley. Some boosters do not want, but if Sullivan and Bo give an endorsement, then he will be accepted (look for Brother Chette to be nearby)
Smart: Dye's choice (I do NOT want) PM felt he would be above Petrino, but some believe he is too big a risk because he has never been a head coach, plus it is part of the power struggle that want Dye's influence reduced .
Malzahn: Part of the discipline problem (especially with Dyer).. Too close to the Chizik Regime... (Some have him higher).
If we go beyond that list, I will be surprised.
BTW, I know you can't bump locked threads, but you can still upvote/downvote them - so I'm proud to say that, 8 years after the fact, I uv'ed this fine comment from Rocky in response to questions why it was taking so long to announce Chiz's departure:

They need to give Chiz time to haul his books out to his car.
