Luckily we are so loaded at RB that we could focus on the run
It will be decent, but can be great if JJ can add the option.
If JJ can't get the passing and option going we are Fuuuuuu....

He's not very quick, but he looked decent running. 4 carries, 16 yards, 1 TD
I think he'd make a good short yardage option. QB Power right up the middle, let him use his strength and length to pick up short conversions. That's the play I was hoping they'd run on that 4th and 1 in the 1st qtr.
Peyton and Jovon are such physical runners that a read option with one of them and JJ should be unstoppable at picking up short yards

Didn't say he didn't look good in what he did. He didn't do enough of it.
We will need a very good passing game, a very good option game, or a combo of both to be successful.

Thank the stars for Timeout Trino

Part of that is the play calling. It needs to be adjusted, but I think 10 carries is probably the limit of what we'll ever consistently see out of JJ. Despite his size I don't think he's built to carry the load like Marshall and Cam did, if that makes sense. And even if he could do it, I don't think he wants to. It's not his style. The first time I heard of him was an interview he had after Hoover's 7-on-7 tournament the summer before his 10th grade year, and he said then "I can run, but I prefer to sit in the pocket and throw. I'm a gun slinger". And it's obvious that he still has the same mentality

I mostly chalk it up to first game jitters. Both teams made mistakes and expecting the team to be in midseason form is kinda dumb IMO.
I think this game might of leveled off the expectations of some of the fans.
As long as the team keeps taking it 1 game at a time I don't see why a 2010/2013 esq isn't out of the question. Just have to keep getting better every game.

I wonder what the thinking is behind throwing thirty yard passes, when you only need a few yards? Gus baffles me sometimes, but what do I know?

A little bit of both. I think we will get better, but I don't think this is a championship team. We overhyped JJ way too much and were probably going to be letdown no matter what today. I do think we are two injuries away from a below average defense. I think we will be okay against pro style teams and have serious issues against spread teams.
We played a good first half. We were still very lucky to be in the spot we were at halftime though. Did you see them spread us out, get us in the same formation we ran last year, and then pummel us to death with edge runs? We made a point this offseason to set the edge and we come out and do nothing close against the spread formation they used in the second half. Reminded me of 2006. Anytime a qb runs a couple times successfully we turn to mush on defense. We need to see a real second game jump or this season is not going to end the way we want.
