Where 2018 signees Jalil Irvin, Kameron Stutts fit on Auburn football’s offensive line (SECCountry)
quote:
AUBURN, Ala. — Make no mistake about it — Auburn football wanted more numbers in its 2018 recruiting class than it got on the offensive line.
The Tigers signed 3-star linemen Jalil Irvin and Kameron Stutts in this cycle. It could add another in the next few weeks with Rice Calvin Anderson, who will be a graduate transfer and has several powerhouse programs vying for his services.
Auburn’s 2018 class was a strong one for building depth, and that extends to the offensive line. Even though the Tigers lost four starters on the line to graduation, they have a next wave of starters ready to step into the void.
Prince Tega Wanogho, Mike Horton and Marquel Harrell will most likely take over as full-time first-team linemen in 2018. Redshirt freshmen Calvin Ashley and Nick Brahms should be in the mix for starting positions as well. Auburn also has returning reserves in Tyler Carr, Kaleb Kim, Brodarious Hamm, Austin Troxell and Prince Sammons.
Due to that returning experience, there won’t be a lot of pressure on Irvin and Stutts to play right away. Neither are early enrollees, which will make it tougher for them to break into any sort of rotation as freshmen.
Irvin has been told by coaches he will compete for the starting center job when he arrives at Auburn. Brahms and Kim will be the top candidates there in spring practice, and there’s a chance Horton could slide from guard to work at center. Irvin will have the opportunity in fall camp to prove he can be a key depth piece at a position that doesn’t return any starting experience.
As for Stutts, his future at Auburn most likely will come at guard. Horton and Harrell are the favorites there for starting jobs in 2018. Coaches like the potential in Hamm, who redshirted in 2017 after successfully beating cancer in 2016. Don’t be surprised if he makes a serious move this preseason.
While Auburn wanted more on the offensive line, any additional pickups — except for the experienced Anderson — wouldn’t have been expected to start in 2018. Irvin and Stutts will compete for playing time in fall camp, but either filling an open starting job would be a major surprise.
Their presence will be valuable in terms of numbers. Auburn lost five offensive linemen and brought in only two through recruiting. The Tigers shouldn’t lose many linemen after the 2018 season, but they’ll have to backfill, so to speak, with the 2019 class.
As interior players, Irvin and Stutts should have time to develop as freshmen under J.B. Grimes without being forced into key roles. That’s the ideal scenario for offensive linemen in the SEC.

Turning the page: Top storylines to expect with 2019 class (Rivals)
quote:
February’s National Signing Day is in the books, effectively bringing an end to the 2018 recruiting cycle. The addition of the Early Signing Period made for some unique headlines between December and this week, but now attention can turn to the 2019 class. With spring around the corner, here are five major storylines to keep track of for the next class.

1. Can Georgia give an encore performance?
Nobody would have doubted that Georgia would enjoy a nice bump in its recruiting efforts this season after playing in the national championship, but few could have predicted the Bulldogs landing eight five-star recruits in their signing class this year. Perhaps it could be argued that Alabama underestimated how many recruits would take advantage of the Early Signing Period, but it’s a guarantee that Nick Saban won’t let the same thing happen in 2019. The Crimson Tide were the winners in that championship game, after all. Clemson landed six five-star prospects and will be motivated to come back strong as well. Maybe Kirby Smart has cracked the code and we’re witnessing a changing of the guard in recruiting powers, but he better be ready for a fight.

2. Teams off to a fast start
Full disclosure, Smart is off to arguably the best start recruiting in 2019, so maybe he does have things figured out. Georgia already has one five-star player committed in Jadon Haselwood, and two four-stars on the cusp of such status in Dominick Blaylock and Nolan Smith in the fold early on as well. Alabama is right behind with five four-star players committed. Oklahoma had two five-star players committed at one time in Arjei Henderson and Theo Wease, but both have since de-committed although they have stayed close to the program and are still considering the Sooners. In the meantime, Lincoln Riley’s early success was enough to sell high four-stars Spencer Rattler, Trejan Bridges and Austin Stogner to be the early headline names in his 2019 crop.

3. Use of early official visits
While players could sign in December for the first time in 2018, something that was included with that change but not immediately implemented was the addition of spring official visits. Several players have taken to social media to announce their intentions to take some - or all - of their official visits between April and June. Some coaches have made comments expressing displeasure in adding another time of the year when they need to be on campus recruiting to keep up with the Joneses, but there is no choice but to keep up with the Joneses. Early offers have been given out liberally and the recruiting process continues to start earlier and earlier.
Very interested to see how this plays out this spring

4. What quarterbacks will step forward to lead the class?
Class of 2019’s best quarterback prospect, JT Daniels, re-classified to 2018 and there isn’t another quarterback in the Rivals100 until No. 31, Bo Nix. Spencer Rattler is right behind him at No. 32 overall, but there are no five-star quarterbacks coming up after having at least one in every class since 2011. Nix has the closest thing to an offer list fitting of such a prospect, but in his last competitive appearance, the Under Armour Future 50 camp, he wasn’t so much more impressive than Grant Gunnell (No. 62 nationally) that it can be confidently said he is that guy.

5. Rivalries renewed
After all of the recent coaching changes at big-time programs, National Signing Day 2018 planted the seeds for what promises to be some exciting recruiting wars with classic rivals. Oklahoma and Texas had some moments in that regard this year, but with Jimbo Fisher at A&M, football fans in the Lone Star State have an in-state battle to watch. The same could be said about Florida and Florida State after Willie Taggart was quickly shipped in to replace Fisher with the understanding that the Sunshine State is the territory he could personally recruit successfully. Dan Mullen is no slouch in that regard, and he brings the benefit of learning how to recruit creatively for a program at Mississippi State that had to go toe-to-toe against perceived heavier-hitters. Chip Kelly also seemed to capably piece together a nice class in 2018 after a bit of a dubious start, and a potential recruiting showdown between UCLA and USC could be very entertaining as well.

Auburn hopes Aussie rules at punter (247)
quote:
AUBURN, Alabama -- Auburn will likely have a new starting punter in the fall thanks to a quick peek at film from Australia.
Auburn didn't need to visit its newest punter on the recruiting trail. He came to them thanks to the Internet. Coaches watched film of Arryn Siposs, showed interest in the Australian and then he visited the Plains in December. The Australian committed soon after his visit to the United States and signed with the Tigers on Wednesday.
Siposs has played Australian rules football for the last five years. The professional football player is 25, engaged and set to be married. He's not like your typical college athlete -- and he might already be Auburn's best punter before he straps on an Auburn uniform.
"I watched him play two games, which I don’t know all the rules to it, but you can tell whether a guy is a competitor," Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said. "He’s a great athlete. He can kick it with his right foot or his left foot. He’s going to give us a lot of flexibility with our punt team, and then he has some film of when he was punting with the JUGS machine. He’s got a super leg. And then you get a chance to meet him."
Auburn ranked 115th nationally in net punting last season, meaning the days of Aidan Marshall are likely coming to an end when Siposs enrolls in classes in the summer.
Siposs is also not afraid of contact. Watch a few minutes of film from his playing days in ProKick Australia and you'll see a physical player.
“Tell you what, I would bet he’s not going to be scared to tackle, because he’s been tackling without pads on," Malzahn said. "So I bet he’ll tackle somebody.”
The last five Ray Guy Award winners have hailed from Prokick Australia. Malzahn hopes Siposs follows in their footsteps.
"It definitely helps," he said.

Top teams and top prospects in 2019 recruiting (ESPN)

Recruiting never stops. The 2018 class is officially in the books and attention has turned to 2019. While the coming months will be an introductory period to the class for some, teams have already been hard at work, with a few off to fast starts.

Georgia Bulldogs
The Bulldogs just signed the top class for the 2018 cycle and are already showing that they will be serious contenders to do so in 2019. The group includes six players ranked in the ESPN Junior 300 with three ranked in the top 10. Among them are the top two wide receivers in the class, Jadon Haselwood, a long and smooth target, and Dominick Blaylock, an explosive player with quick hands. Georgia just signed seven of the top 10 players within their home state, and Kirby Smart is again demonstrating that it will not be easy for other programs to lure top Peach State players. All seven commitments for 2019 are from inside the state lines, with ESPN Junior 300 pass-rusher Nolan Smith (a Savannah native) attending school in Florida at IMG Academy.

Texas A&M Aggies
The Aggies were able to close well and finish with a top-20 class in 2018, but with a full year to work on the 2019 class, Jimbo Fisher and his staff could compete for a top-10 finish next year. Of the handful of commitments, four are ranked in the ESPN Junior 300, including No. 1 safety Brian Williams, a potential playmaker in the secondary. While Fisher landed ESPN 300 QB James Foster on signing day, he has another top QB prospect on board for 2019 in No. 2 pocket-passer Grant Gunnell. The class also includes a pair of in-state receivers, Kameron Brown and Chase Lane.

Miami Hurricanes
The Hurricanes were among the fast starters a year ago and are again for 2019. They have one of the biggest classes at this point, but it's not just about numbers. Miami is filling key needs on defense with ESPN Junior 300 defensive tackle Denzel Daxon and linebackers Jesiah Pierre and Diamante Howard. The same can be said of the offensive line, led by quick guard Renato Brown. The skill talent is headlined by local ESPN Junior 300 receiver Brieon Fuller, who has a good blend of length and speed and can also create yards after the catch.

Alabama Crimson Tide
Each of the Crimson Tide's pledges is ranked, with three inside the top 100. The Crimson Tide addressed secondary needs with the 2018 class and now have more talent headed to that group in safety Brendan Gant and No. 6-ranked corner Brandon Turnage. The Tide went into Georgia for top-10 outside linebacker King Mwikuta, a rangy prospect with high upside.

Oklahoma Sooners
The Sooners are looking for a third straight top-10 class. The class includes two prospects ranked No. 1 at their respective positions: dual-threat quarterback Spencer Rattler, a talented signal-caller with a smooth, quick delivery; and tight end Austin Stogner, a big target with strong hands.

Five prospects you need to know
LB Owen Pappoe
Loganville, Georgia
ESPN Junior 300 rank: 4
Pappoe could be the next big linebacker from Georgia. He already has been in the recruiting process for quite some time, gaining offers early in his high school career. Pappoe has narrowed his list to Clemson, Auburn and Georgia, but he is still planning spring visits to Penn State, Ohio State and Michigan. The 6-foot-1, 207-pound prospect would like to commit before the season, so those spring visits will be big.
Posted on 2/9/18 at 5:25 pm to TigerPaw1
quote:
OL Devontae Dobbs
Belleville, Michigan
ESPN Junior 300 rank: 7
Dobbs has become a national recruit very quickly. He has offers from Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, Ohio State and plenty of others. Early on, Michigan State made a big impression on the in-state prospect, but Clemson, Alabama and Ohio State have caught up. Michigan might have a shot to get back in the picture after falling out early, but it will be a tough battle to land the 6-foot-5, 286-pound lineman.

quote:
DT Ishmael Sopsher
Amite, Louisiana
ESPN Junior 300 rank: 8
Sopsher has Florida, LSU, Ole Miss, Auburn, Texas, Clemson, Michigan, Georgia, Mississippi State, Florida State, Tennessee and Penn State in his top group. A 6-foot-4, 330-pound defensive tackle, Sopsher has visited a few schools, including LSU and Alabama. In the end, he might be tough to pull from Louisiana.
Posted on 2/9/18 at 5:26 pm to TigerPaw1
quote:
WR Marcus Washington
St. Louis, Missouri
ESPN Junior 300 rank: 11
Washington's offer list has grown tremendously over the past few months, seemingly adding a new big offer every week. While he doesn't have an official top list yet, Alabama, Florida State, Georgia, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oregon and Penn State are schools in good position with the 6-foot-2, 177-pound receiver.
Posted on 2/9/18 at 5:26 pm to TigerPaw1
quote:
RB Trey Sanders
Bradenton, Florida
ESPN Junior 300 rank: 17
Sanders decommitted from Alabama in January but still holds the Tide in high regard, and Alabama will have a definite shot to get him back. Plenty of schools have been coming after him, including Florida State, Texas A&M, Oklahoma and Ohio State. He could have an active spring with official visits, and at 6 feet and 216 pounds, ranked as the top running back in the 2019 class, he will have his pick of where he'd like to visit.
