Auburn recruiting question of the day: Under-the-radar targets to know (SECCountry)
quote:
The nature of the Auburn recruiting job requires some advanced scouting.
In essence, Auburn is sandwiched between Alabama, Georgia and Florida State. That requires the Tigers to evaluate deeper than most as it has to fight off proximity-to-home recruiting battles with three of the biggest blue bloods in college football. Auburn still manages to win its fair share of battles against the aforementioned three schools, but it’s no surprise that the Tigers sometimes have to dip into their secondary or tertiary options on the recruiting board.
Those moments are when the staff’s evaluations are most vital. Any coach can look at a highly ranked prospect and say he’s a good fit for the program. It’s much tougher when the recruit is less touted and has fewer offers from big schools. That when evaluations are so important.
Auburn has had a lot of success recently with that type of guy.
Jordyn Peters, Daquan Newkirk, Daniel Thomas, Mike Horton, Jeremiah Dinson and JaTarvious Whitlow are a few of the prospects ranked outside the top 500 who Auburn has landed in recent recruiting cycles. All of them are expected to make contributions to the 2018 Auburn football team. You can even throw in a fringe guy such as linebacker Deshaun Davis or someone such as Malik Willis, who Auburn believed in at a position others didn’t.
The jury is still out on who that may be among Caleb Johnson, Kam Stutts, Kolbi Fuqua and Roger McCreary. But history suggests at least one of those four likely will shine past their sub-500 ranking by the time their Auburn career is complete.
And, just as likely, the Tigers will land someone of similar caliber in the 2019 class.
Here are the prospects Auburn is strongly considering so far this spring. The following 12 prospects have been offered by the Tigers and have visited the Plains in the last two months. Oftentimes the sub-500 names that land in the class emerge later in the cycle (see: McCreary and Johnson), but it’s also that type of player who can help turn stagnant recruiting into some buzz (see: Stutts and Fuqua last A-Day).
It wouldn’t surprise me to see any of these prospects end up in Auburn’s class, even though they might not be as highly regarded as some of their counterparts — yet.

OL Kingsley Eguakun (Miami commit)

Auburn football makes top 10 for Georgia ATH, named No. 1 choice for Alabama LB (SECCountry)
quote:
Georgia ATH amends top-schools list to add Auburn
When Tra Wilkins released his top 10, Auburn didn’t make the list.
The 6-foot-2, 210-pound athlete — recruited by most as an outside linebacker — had a top group of Georgia, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Nebraska, Alabama, South Carolina, Michigan, Tennessee and Mississippi State. The Auburn omission came as a bit of a surprise given Wilkins’ background at Stephenson High in Stone Mountain, Ga., which has given recent commitments to Auburn in the form of Carlito Gonzalez and Jalil Irvin.
Wilkins only needed one trip to the Plains to amend his top 10.
He told SEC Country that Auburn is now firmly within his top 10 and should even be considered one of his favorites. Wilkins attended the Tigers’ most recent junior day. That resulted in the change in heart regarding Auburn.
As of now, Wilkins doesn’t have a timeline for a decision.

2020 linebacker places Auburn on top
Jackson-Olin High School has been good to Auburn the last few recruiting cycles.
The Birmingham, Ala., school has provided the Tigers with 2017 linebacker TD Moultry and 2018 defensive tackle Coynis Miller. Jammal Abrams and Vonta Bentley are the 2019 recruits who Auburn is targeting, though Abrams is already committed to Florida. The trend won’t stop in the 2020 class, either.
Auburn offered 2020 linebacker Quandarrius Robinson last summer. He has since picked up offers from South Carolina and Oregon. Robinson is 6-4 and 200 pounds, so his sheer size stands out on a football field.
He has always had major interest in Auburn. For the first time (to my knowledge), Robinson announced the Tigers were his No. 1. In an interview with Rivals.com’s Chad Simmons published Monday, Robinson called Auburn the leader for now.
“I have visited Auburn five or six times and I went to a lot of their games last season, so I am really liking them a lot right now,” Robinson told Simmons. “They are my No. 1 school because I believe they really want me. I know it is not time for me make a decision yet, but they are recruiting me like it is my time and like I am a priority.”

Auburn recruiting question of the day: Iron Bowl recruiting battles to watch in 2019 class (SECCountry)
quote:
This is an evergreen question in the world of Yellowhammer State recruiting.
Every recruiting cycle, Auburn and Alabama battle it out for in-state and out-of-state prospects who hope to join one side of the college football’s richest rivalry. In the 2018 class, it was Coynis Miller, Asa Martin and Seth Williams who ended up at Auburn and Jalyn Armour-Davis, Saivion Smith and Michael Parker who landed at Alabama.
The trend won’t change in the Class of 2019.
Auburn and Alabama have already been hosting recruits and offering prospects this spring. There’s plenty of overlap among the players who are taking visits to both schools. When it comes down to it, many of those guys will end up deciding between Auburn and Alabama.
Here are the guys who will likely make Iron Bowl recruiting decisions:
5-star OL Clay Webb, Oxford, Ala.
5-star LB Nakobe Dean, Horn Lake, Miss.
4-star CB Christian Williams, Daphne, Ala.
4-star S Jaylen McCollough, Powder Springs, Ga.
4-star DL Nathan Pickering, Seminary, Miss.
4-star OL Amari Kight, Alabaster, Ala.
4-star DL Justin Eboigbe, Forest Park, Ga.
4-star ATH Brandon Turnage, Oxford, Miss.
4-star S Cortez Andrews, Tallahassee, Fla.
4-star LB Kalen Deloach, Savannah, Ga.
4-star LB Vonta Bentley, Birmingham, Ala.
3-star ATH John Rhys Plumlee, Hattiesburg, Miss.
3-star DL DJ Dale, Pinson, Ala.
3-star S Cordale Flott, Saraland, Ala.
Some of those will be strictly Auburn-Alabama battles: Webb, Kight, Williams, Dale and Flott are the most likely to fall into the “Iron Bowl only” category. The rest will have several other programs in the mix, but Auburn and Alabama will be at the forefront of the conversation.
As always, expect some under-the-radar offers to go out in the spring to add some intrigue to this list. Remember, at this time last year Auburn had just offered Asa Martin and his Alabama offer remained about a month away.

Where Auburn stands with 5-star LB target Owen Pappoe as decision date nears (SECCountry)
quote:
Where Auburn stands as Owen Pappoe’s decision nears
Everyone in the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry country should mark their calendars for May 5.
It’s been dubbed Cinco de Pappoe by many of the Internet’s creative minds.
Five-star linebacker Owen Pappoe will make his college decision on that date in early May. Pappoe said following his most recent visit to Auburn that he’d like to make a decision sooner rather than later — preferably before his senior season — and it didn’t take long for Pappoe to set that timeline in stone.
Pappoe told SEC Country two weeks ago that this will be an Auburn-Georgia battle despite the Tigers being left out of his original top 2.
“That top three is gone. I’d say Georgia and Auburn are my top two. … Right now Georgia is my top school. I said Auburn and Georgia are my top two, but I would say Georgia is my No. 1 right now. They really do have a good chance of landing me,” Pappoe said.
“Clemson, I haven’t really been in contact with them. I wouldn’t say they’re out the picture, but we haven’t really been communicating that much.”
It’s not going to be easy to top the home-state Bulldogs. Pappoe, the No. 7 overall prospect in the 2019 class, has visited Georgia so many times in the last two years that he can’t count how many times he’s been to Athens.
If Auburn has a shot, it’s with linebackers coach Travis Williams. One source said that Auburn knows this is a long shot, but Pappoe is a can’t-miss prospect who is worth the attempt. That late dedication has given Auburn a push. This is an uphill climb, and the Tigers knew that going into the heavy spring recruitment. But they’re gradually closing the gap.
Pappoe expects to visit the Plains at least two more times before making his decision. He plans to attend the spring game and make a separate, more personalized trip. He’d like to make more, but the clock is ticking as May 5 is less than two months out. Of course, Pappoe will make more visits to Athens, as well.
Last-minute trips to Clemson, Tennessee and Alabama also wouldn’t come as a surprise, though Pappoe doesn’t have anything lined up.

Monitoring linebacker from Louisiana
I’ve written about Auburn’s plan to cast a national linebacker net in the 2019 class.
That will take linebackers coach Travis Williams to South Florida, Southern California and everywhere in between. Louisiana is a destination spot where Williams will place extra emphasis on one of the Tigers’ top targets: Donte Starks of Marrero. Starks isn’t the only Louisiana linebacker Auburn fans should watch in the 2019 class.
Bryton Constantin is a 6-foot-2, 220-pound linebacker from Baton Rouge who ranks as the No. 45 linebacker and No. 623 overall prospect in the country. Constantin has picked up offers from Clemson, Auburn, Florida, TCU, Tennessee and others this spring.
He recently released a top schools list that included Auburn. For Constantin, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Clemson, Tennessee, Auburn, Florida, TCU and Houston cracked the top 8. He recently visited Clemson, so those Tigers are an early frontrunner.
It’s worth noting that LSU isn’t involved — yet.
LSU has offered more than 20 linebackers, but Constantin isn’t one of them. Oftentimes, LSU knows it can slow play an in-state prospect, but it also might be an indication that Ed Orgeron and Co. value prospects from Texas, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida more than the in-state talent. If the home-state Tigers were to offer, it likely would cause a major shakeup in Constantin’s top group.

Not surprising. He's been a Bama lean forever. He's giving us a chance, but he's one of those kids that grew up around a bunch of bama people and that will likely be tough to beat (typically is), even though he's giving us a legit look

KN put up an insider yesterday. Here's summary
- 4* LB Donte Starks plans to return to AU on March 24th for his 2nd trip this year. KN's sources say AU is a factor in this race but getting his family to be ok with the distance is the big hurdle (Starks said after first visit mom wants him close by at LSU) but AU staff hoping that more trips will help ease those concerns.
- Starks won't be only top LB target there. 5* Nakobe Dean also plans to visit on the 24th
- Tigers working to get 5* LB Owen Pappoe back on campus a couple more times before his commitment announcement on May 5th. Sounds like he will probably be at the Spring Game
- Keep an eye on 4* LB De'Gabriel Floyd out of CA. AU is definitely in that race as well namely because Floyd has really clicked with T-WILL. Williams plans to visit Floyd in May
- KN says 3* Ah'shawn Moore out of VA (plays at same high school as Devin Hunter did) is guy to watch at Buck spot. Tigers really like him
- Kevin Steele is apparently taking over as the are recruiter for Mobile, AL. T-WILL is being moved to Jacksonville, FL region which is where Herb Hand used to recruit

Auburn recruiting question of the day: Chances with top cornerback Devin Bush (SECCountry)
quote:
Cornerback will be a point of emphasis for Auburn in the 2019 class — a necessity, perhaps.
The Tigers haven’t landed an abundance of cornerbacks in the last two recruiting cycles. Auburn landed a few under-the-radar types who have shown early promise with Traivon Leonard and Jordyn Peters, though Peters is doing more than playing cornerback.
Christian Tutt and Roger McCreary will add depth this season. But the switch of Noah Igbinoghene from receiver to cornerback tells the story of how the coaching staff feels about its depth at safety. (Non-recruiting note: A few of my sources have told me they think Igbinoghene has an NFL future at cornerback).
It’s going to be a big haul at cornerback for the Tigers in 2019. Whether that consists of Auburn’s elite targets is the million-dollar question.
Here are the prospects near the top of Auburn’s cornerback board who are strongly considering the Tigers (not a finished list, by any means, with spring practice evaluations upcoming).
4-star Christian Williams
4-star Tyrique Stevenson
4-star Kaiir Elam
4-star Brandon Turnage
4-star Jaylin Simpson
4-star Devin Bush
4-star DJ Turner II
4-star Warren Burrell
Based on the need — and the recruiting pushes by Kevin Steele, Marcus Woodson and Greg Brown — I’d expect Auburn to land at least one player from that list. It’s hard to say early in the process which prospect is most likely to choose the Tigers.
With Bush, as @BrandonBurns6 asked, there’s a clear mutual interest.
In the matter of a year, Auburn has hosted Bush on two junior days. The event a year ago resulted in Bush’s first college offer, which set off a domino effect across college football that included LSU, Georgia, Florida State, Florida and Clemson. A few weeks ago, on a return visit with family, Bush spent a whole weekend on the Plains.
But the big factor here, as always with New Orleans prospects, is LSU. Bush is at or near the top of that cornerback board, as well, hence the 100 percent 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions in favor of the home-state Tigers. As long as he’s a top option for LSU, that’s going to be the expected choice.
Auburn showed long-term dedication to a few recruitments last recruiting cycle, however. Tutt and Anthony Schwartz are the ones that stand out. Even when Auburn has slim odds, the Tigers find a way to pull off surprises. Bush will be the subject of one of those attempts in the 2019 class.

Top DL target Justin Eboigbe explains how relationship with Rodney Garner helps Auburn (SECCountry)
quote:
Relationship with Auburn DL coach stands out to top DE
FOREST PARK, Ga. — For Justin Eboigbe, it’s box-checking season.
The 6-foot-5, 260-pound defensive end isn’t in a rush to make his college decision. He has a flexible timeline, but at this rate Eboigbe (pronounced: e-boy-be) expects his decision will run through the fall so he can take official visits. So the spring and summer is about Eboigbe evaluating each of the schools courting him.
His list — which has grown exponentially since the Rising Stars all-star game in Atlanta — includes Auburn, Alabama, Georgia, Clemson, Mississippi State, Florida, Miami, Tennessee, Notre Dame and many others.
It is now time for Eboigbe to create his checklist and figure out which schools fit him best.
“I’m closer to the middle than the end. I’m still trying to figure things out. I’m still trying to go on visits. I’m still trying to see where I’ll take my official visits. I’m really just weighing my options right now,” Eboigbe told SEC Country.
“There is going to be a point in time where I narrow it down, but there’s a couple schools I’m waiting on: USC, Ohio State and LSU. … It’s been somewhat crazy trying to just figure out where I’m going to spend the next three-to-four years after my last year of high school.”
The boxes, in no particular order, that the Forest Park High School star wants checked by his college of choice: strong relationship with his position coach; a place where he feels “comfortable” on and off the field; a program with a winning history; and a school close enough for his family to attend games.
Auburn immediately checks the position-coach box, which is the factor about which Eboigbe speaks most passionately. Eboigbe said his four most tight-knit coaching relationships are with Florida defensive line coach Sal Sunseri, Clemson defensive line coach Todd Bates, Georgia defensive line coach Tray Scott and Auburn defensive line coach Rodney Garner.
When Eboigbe visited the Plains on Feb. 17, his interaction with Garner made an impression.
“Having conversation with Coach Garner and Coach [Kevin] Steele was just great. They’re great guys,” Eboigbe said. “I have a better relationship with Coach Garner because he’s my position coach. He’s an old-fashioned guy that has been around for a long time and has seen basically everything that you can see.
“He’s one of the most proven D-line coaches in the nation, has had plenty of guys go to the draft. But it’s more about life than football when you’re talking to him.”
Eboigbe has taken five college visits since his recruitment took off. He’s been to Auburn, Alabama, Georgia, Clemson and Tennessee. Eboigbe said he didn’t have a favorite from that group, but all five stand out. He wanted to make it clear that those schools are the ones on his mind because he’s taken visits.
But based on that, he at least feels a sense of comfort at Auburn.
The proximity-to-home factor works in the Tigers’ favor, as well. It’s only an hour and a half from Forest Park to Auburn, which was on Eboigbe’s radar at an early age. He self-identifies as a Tigers fan growing up because his interest in college football was kicked off by the success of the 2010 football team led by Cam Newton.
It won’t be a major factor in his decision, but Eboigbe admitted that the Tigers’ special place in his heart will play a small role.
“I started watching college football right at the Cam Newton time, so that’s where it started. But I continued to like and want the success of Auburn with Nick Marshall and Tre Mason and so on. That was one of my favorite teams in sports and college football,” Eboigbe said.
“It factors in somewhat, but not really. You can like somewhere, but it may not be the most comfortable situation. But running out to Jordan-Hare Stadium thinking I grew up watching TV and seeing past players who I liked so much were doing this exact same thing — that was cool.”

Donte Starks, top LB target from Louisiana, says he can see himself leaving state for college (SECCountry)
quote:
Louisiana LB says he can see himself leaving the state
Donte Starks is, and will continue to be, one of Auburn’s top linebacker targets.
The nation’s No. 4 inside linebacker attended the Tigers’ first junior day of the year in January. He said he plans to return to Auburn on March 24 and also expects to make trips to Texas A&M on March 29 and Florida on April 12-13.
Starks’ interest in Auburn is primarily attributed to — stop me if you’ve heard this before — his relationship with linebackers coach Travis Williams.
“Auburn is looking for a linebacker to come in and play immediately for the Class of 2019. They’ll need depth,” Starks told SEC Country. “I went up there for their junior day, and Coach Travis Williams showed me and my family a real good time.”
The obvious team to watch here: LSU.
Starks is the seventh-ranked prospect from Louisiana and a top target for Ed Orgeron and Co. Auburn is well aware of LSU’s strong position in this recruitment, but the Tigers must feel Starks is more open than many believe, which is somewhat corroborated by his interest in taking visits elsewhere.
The one concern with Auburn, according to a few people close to Starks, is the drive for family to come see him play. Some of that was put to rest at the first junior day, however.
Starks hasn’t publicly narrowed his options yet, but it’s something he has done privately. He said he expects to take these upcoming visits, then feel more comfortable making a public announcement about his favorites.
“I have a top 10 that I’m focusing on. I just never released it publicly, so be looking for that soon,” Starks said. “I can see myself leaving the state if another school has everything to offer that I’m looking for. I have to make my decision that’s best for me. ”

Just talked with one of Myles Murphy (5* DL from Powder Springs for 2020) high school coaches. Said UGA, AU, and So Car stand out early. He said he really like AU and USC but of course has a lot of local sway pulling him towards UGA. Said RG has been to see him numerous times and they have a good relationship.
