Defensive back: Carlton Davis, 4 stars (2015)
Ranking: No. 32 cornerback, No. 340 overall
The prognosticators believed there were 31 cornerbacks and 339 players “better” than Davis when he was a high school prospect. Now prognosticators see Davis as a potential first-round NFL draft pick.
That’s value.
Davis wasn’t the highest-ranked defensive back in Auburn’s 2015 class. Safety prospect Jordan Colbert earned that distinction by nearly 200 spots. It quickly became clear that those rankings were off.
Davis went on to become one of the Tigers’ best cover corners in recent memory. He started 32 of 38 games in as a three-year contributor for Auburn. Davis totaled 138 tackles, 4 1/2 tackles for loss, 3 forced fumbles, 29 pass deflections and 4 interceptions during his career.
Runner up: Jordyn Peters, 3 stars (2017)

IMG Academy linebacker Mikel Jones says first visit to Auburn ‘shattered’ expectations (SECCountry)
quote:
IMG Academy linebacker recaps first Auburn visit
Mikel Jones benefited from an old-fashioned recruiting double-dip in Alabama.
The 4-star IMG Academy (Fla.) linebacker did what many out-of-state prospects do when they enter the Yellowhammer State. He sandwiched an Alabama junior day event and an Auburn visit into one weekend. Jones went to Alabama in search of an offer. He didn’t leave with one, but conversations with defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi made him feel confident one will come.
Jones was able to bookend his visit to the state with a visit to Auburn.
It wasn’t a junior day as it was in Tuscaloosa. That allowed much more 1-on-1 time with Auburn coaches, including Gus Malzahn.
“At Auburn, it wasn’t a junior day, so I got to speak to a bunch of the coaches and Coach Malzahn, so that was pretty cool. I liked [linebackers] coach T-Will [Travis Williams] a lot, a real down-to-earth guy. I look forward to keeping up with him,” Jones told SEC Country.
“The highlight of the visit was probably just speaking and having good conversation with Coach Malzahn. It wasn’t really about recruiting or anything. It was just good conversation with him.”
The Tigers coaches who have been recruiting Jones the hardest have been defensive backs coach Greg Brown, his area recruiter, and Williams, his position coach.
Jones stands 6-foot-2 and 208 pounds with the versatility to be an edge rusher or an inside linebacker. He played mostly on the edge as a junior, but it was Lupoi at Alabama who encouraged him to put more inside linebacker film out there in the 2018 season.
These relationships with assistant coaches will be driving forces in Jones’ decision, which should help Auburn, given his relationship with Williams.
“Mainly, the coaches. Yes, facilities are nice and everything, but everybody’s got nice facilities. I want to make sure I have a coach, a position coach, that I’d be comfortable with for the next couple years, make sure the coaching staff is stable. A lot of coaches are switching schools, so I want a coaching staff that’s stable that I can get along with,” Jones said.
“T-Will likes me as a linebacker. This past season I played a lot of rush end, so he knows I can use my hands. He was just telling me to keep doing what I’m doing to get faster, stronger, bigger and perfect my craft. He tells me to not get too caught up in the recruiting, just keep playing football.”
Jones’ process is, more or less, just getting underway.
He holds offers from Auburn, Clemson, Georgia, Louisville, South Carolina and others. Jones is a prospect — especially given the spring exposure at IMG Academy — who likely will pick up many more offers in the coming months. He has visited only Alabama and Auburn this year. He expects to make it to places such as Miami, LSU, Clemson and Georgia in the near future.
Based on his initial impressions of the Plains, he’ll be back.
“I told this to Coach Greg [Brown] when I was leaving. I didn’t have low expectations, but my expectations were definitely shattered after I left,” Jones said. “I really liked the visit, everything about it. I was very pleased with the campus, all the coaches and the atmosphere of the place. I just look forward to coming back in the summer.”

Cordale Flott's Bama offer no surprise to Saraland coach Jeff Kelly (AL.com)
quote:
Saraland coach Jeff Kelly hasn't been surprised by 2019 cornerback Cordale Flott's rapidly rising recruiting profile.
"I've been telling people for a while now that he can play," Kelly said.
Colleges are clearly starting to figure that out.
The 6-foot-1, 165-pound Flott received an offer from defending national champion Alabama over the weekend, the latest in a line of recent scholarship opportunities.
Kelly said Auburn and Florida State also have heavy interest in Flott and could offer soon.
"Cordale is exactly what a lot of guys want in a cornerback," Kelly said. "He's 6-foot-1, can run, has tremendous length and he's physical. If you look at his tape, he mixes it up well at the line of scrimmage. He's also a good tackler. Those things are a recipe for generating a lot of interest from big-time college programs."
Flott's numerous other offers include Ole Miss, Purdue, Central Florida, Memphis, Southern Miss, Troy, UL at Lafayette, UAB and South Alabama. Flott made 54 tackles for the Spartans a year ago, broke up 20 passes and also intercepted a pair.
Interestingly, the 247 composite rankings don't list him among the top 2019 prospects in the state. Expect that to change in the near future. Kelly said he isn't clear on why colleges and recruiting rankings were delayed in seeing Flott's potential.
"Cordale had a great year last year and as a sophomore," Kelly said. "Sometimes as a cornerback, you get that reputation and you don't get that many opportunities. Teams just go the other way. So that is a position where stat lines can be a little misleading.
"I think for Cordale it's just been a matter of him getting out there and being evaluated and coaches doing their due diligence. He's also changed physically a lot in the last two years. He's grown a good a good bit, and that has made a difference."
Kelly said Flott was excited by the Alabama offer and has handled his recruitment well. He's seen the process from a distance with his cousin (Velus Jones, USC) and brother (Wydale Flott, Southern Miss).
"He gets it," Kelly said. "He's a gracious kid. He's tremendously thankful for the opportunities he is receiving, but he's also focused on being the best student he can be and the best player he can be as a senior. It's been an interesting process. Every kid's recruitment is a little different. If you had asked Cordale a month ago whether he expected an offer from Alabama - I'm not even sure that was in his thought process."
Kelly said it's too early to tell when Flott might commit or where he might be leaning.
"I still think there are a lot of opportunities to come for him," Kelly said..

Flott isn't the only Saraland player that is receiving recruiting attention or is expected to receive attention.
Kelly provided updates on several other Spartans as well.
Jay Williams, 2019 wide receiver: Williams has received a lot of interest this offseason and has offers from Chattanooga, Kansas, Morgan State, Southern Miss and UAB among others. Kelly said Southern Miss is a strong possibility at this point for Williams.
J.J. Taylor, 2019 cornerback: Taylor has been a basketball standout at Saraland but hasn't played much football since transferring from Ohio. Kelly said the 6-foot-2 senior could be one of the more intriguing names of the spring and summer. "People are going to come through and they are going to see him in drills and 1-on-1 situations and really like him," Kelly said.
Adam Chaney, 2020 linebacker/running back: Chaney, a two-year starter at linebacker for Saraland, turned heads with a 4.34 40-yard dash in a Rivals Combine over the weekend in Mobile.

KN had an update on 4* CB DJ Turner earlier this week. Says he talks to T-WILL (area recruiter) * Greg Brown a lot. Says it's been awhile since he's visited the Plains but plans to return soon. Has "medium to high" interest in AU but sounds like Clemson might be early team to beat. Also mentioned UF, BAMA, FSU, PSU, STAN & MICH. AU wants him at CB but think he can play anywhere in the secondary.
Dude is high on my wishlist. Gotta get him back on campus soon. We are also hard after his secondary teammates Warren Burrel & Quinton Newsome but this dude is the best of that bunch

Also KN put up a VIP story on 4* TE Luke Deal. He plans to visit this Saturday & watch AU practice. Porter is his lead recruiter & sounds like the two have clicked. He camped at AU as a sophomore but that was as a QB, now he's transitioned to TE. He already has 2 OVs set in April, one to ND & the other to MICH
My favorite AU TE target. A Luke Deal/Sean Brown TE class would be amazing. However CLEM offered yesterday & Wilftong CB'd him there....

5* LB Owen Pappoe told KN that AU has moved to #2 on his list behind UGA. The #1 reason being Travis Williams. Told UGA 247 that T-WILL is the "realest coach I know". Says AU has his attention. Wants to commit by this summer
Still a ton of confidence in Athens on this one

Another 4* prospect UGA leads for but is looking at AU is 4* DE Derrick Hunter. He plans to visit AU soon & has been talking a bunch with Rodney Garner. Plans to visit next month

Bama 247 CB'd 4* CB Christian Williams to Tide...
For once would be nice if an elite instate CB chose AU

From that list, we just need to start offering the same players Muschamp does.

I've been saying this since he left us, especially about dbs.

LSU, FSU & OHST have all offered Trikweze Bridges this week. He already has a Bama offer
Nothing from AU....

Of course not.
I know it's March 1st but it doesn't seem like there are any real big prospects, aside from the two we have on board, that we are in a really good spot for. Always nice to have 4-5 easy gets.

Not sure I would go that far. Made a big impression on Xavier Truss. Are very much a factor for Noah Cain. WRs Ramel Keyton, Frank Ladson & Jashawn Sheffield are all very high on AU. Got a CB from wolk on Kalen DeLoach. One of the top teams for Darius Thomas. Thought to be one of the top guys for Derrian Brown. Donte Starks has us in his top 2 as does Owen Pappoe. Jalen Curry has us in his top group. I am sure there are others I am missing
Like you said tho, it's early & that's true for both posibarners & negabarners. The most encouraging thing early for me is it appears we are getting more bigger names on campus earlier this cycle than last. I do agree tho that it's frustrating how most of the top instate guys don't see high on us with Clay Webb probably leaning Bama along with Christian Williams, Vonta Bentley & Amari Kight

I share your frustration with Trikweze tho

I plan on catching up on articles this weekend. Sounds like AU should have a solid visitor list this weekend

I mean yea we are in their group but if signing day were today we might get 1, maybe 2 at best of those guys. Aside from Ladson and Darius Thomas who I haven't heard of yet most of them are pretty solid leans to other programs.
