Predicting the 2019 Auburn recruiting class (247)
quote:

After five straight top-10 recruiting classes, Auburn just missed doing it again with the 2018 signees. That group finished 12th in the rankings.

Can the Tigers get back into the top 10. Is the top five attainable in 2019?

Well, Auburn certainly is off to a good start.

With Big Cat Weekend, the Tigers' huge annual recruiting event, Saturday, Auburn has eight commitments and the No. 17 class in the country. The average rating per commit is 90.77, which is above the 90.00 threshold for a 4-star average.

Five-star linebacker Owen Pappoe, 4-star quarterback Bo Nix and 4-star receiver George Pickens are the headline-grabbers, but the Tigers have done well at tight end with Luke Deal and Tyler Fromm and at cornerback with Cordale Flott and Jaylin Simpson. Additionally, they have a pledge from 3-star center Jakai Clark, one of the top run blockers in Georgia.

Still, there is lots of work ahead.

On the offensive line, the Tigers have just Clark committed. That means they need to fill about three or four spots. There currently are no defensive linemen committed and Auburn would like to sign four or more. And, then you have the running back position, where the Tigers are trying hard to land an elite back to complement Nix and Pickens.

With National Signing Day still eight months away, predicting what the final Auburn recruiting class will look like isn't easy. So much can and will change between now and then. The board will shift. New names will emerge. Surprises will pop up.

Nonetheless, we decided to try to predict the 2019 signing class.

Today, we've taken all the current intel we have and combined it with Auburn's needs to compile this projection, which really is simply an educated guess. We won't know for months how many total spots Auburn has available. We went with 23 based on some intel that it should be a few below 25.

Here goes nothing ...

QB: Bo Nix, Pinson Valley (Ala.): Nix, a 4-star recruit, committed to the Tigers earlier this year and is locked in with Auburn. His dad (Patrick) played quarterback at Auburn. His mom went to school there. His sister is there now as a student. Nix will compete in the prestigious Elite 11 quarterback camp this week so he can't attend Big Cat Weekend. But he is working hard to recruit for the Tigers and should return to campus multiple times between now and when he signs his Letter-of-Intent in December. Nix will be an early enrollee, meaning he just might have a chance to play in 2019.

RB: Noah Cain, Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy: With Cain, a 4-star back, you hardly ever seem to hear or read too much about Auburn. But he will be on campus from Friday-Sunday with his parents for Big Cat Weekend. For Cain, this will be visit No. 2 to Auburn this year. He was there in January with his dad. His mother later visited the school by herself. The family has bonded well with running backs coach Tim Horton and that has given the Tigers a legitimate chance in this battle. LSU, Oklahoma and Ohio State are just a few of the schools Auburn will have to beat out, but the Tigers are very much in this.

WR: George Pickens, Hoover (Ala.): Pickens, who holds a 4-star rating and is a top-100 recruit, has seen his stock soar this year. By the time it's all said and done, he potentially could be a 5-star prospect in the industry generated 247Sports composite. He committed to the Tigers last summer but has continued to visit other schools, notably Alabama, FSU and Georgia. Auburn feels good about keeping him in the class, but if the Tide pushes Auburn will have to work to hold onto him. Pickens, who is 6-feet-3.5, 195 pounds, is a special talent and he is a major part of Auburn's recruiting class. He'll be in town Saturday.

WR/ATH: Zion Puckett, Griffin (Ga.) Spalding: Figuring out who to project as the second receiver the class was difficult. Auburn is working hard to flip 5-star Jadon Haselwood from Georgia, but that won’t be easy. The Tigers also are in the mix for several other recruits. They are recruiting Puckett as an athlete. He could play on either side of the ball. He has visited Auburn once this year and will return Saturday. Then, Puckett will make an official visit there in the fall. This is a talented two-way recruit that Auburn seems to like a lot.

TE: Tyler Fromm, Warner Robins (Ga.): Fromm, younger brother to Georgia quarterback Jake Fromm, committed to Auburn in May. While he's a complete player at the tight end position, he is known mostly for his pass-catching abilities. Fromm had 43 receptions in 2017. He chose the Tigers over Florida and South Carolina. Adding Fromm was huge as Auburn did not sign a tight end in the 2018 class. He's a guy the Tigers really wanted -- and needed. Fromm will have a chance to compete for playing time early in his career at Auburn. Look for Fromm to attend Big Cat Weekend on Saturday.

TE: Luke Deal, Greenwood (S.C) Emerald: The 3-star recrut in the 247Sports Composite committed to Auburn over Clemson, Michigan, N.C. State, Notre Dame and Ohio State last week. He's a big-bodied recruit who is 6-feet-5 and 237 pounds. A converted quarterback, Deal not only can catch the ball but is considered a high-level blocker. With Deal and Fromm on board, the Tigers probably are done at tight end after having landed two of their top targets. Deal, like Fromm, will attend Big Cat Weekend on Saturday at Auburn. He said after committing that he now is ready to start recruiting for the Tigers. Deal already has formed a nice little bond with Nix.

OL-C: Jakai Clark, Grayson (Ga.): The 3-star center prospect committed to Auburn back in April. While he doesn’t have a huge offer list a couple things stand out. 1. His coaches and teammates say he is the best blocker on a Grayson team that probably will be nationally ranked in 2018. 2. One of the schools that was on him hard, Boston College, is considered a strong offensive line school. Clark had a foot injury that limited him in the spring, but he should be back to 100 percent in the near future. In the meantime, he has been recruiting hard for Auburn, along with prospects such as Nix and 5-star linebacker Owen Pappoe, another Auburn commit.

OG: Keiondre Jones, Hogansville (Ga.) Callaway: The 4-star recruit has visited Auburn a lot. Four times already this year — that we know of. He will return Saturday for Big Cat Weekend. Right now, this looks like it could be shaping up to be an Auburn-Florida battle. The Tigers have proximity to home in their corner. At Florida, his cousin (Emory Jones) is a freshman quarterback. Auburn has made a ton of progress in this recruitment this year and certainly has some momentum right now entering the weekend. Pappoe is said to be recruiting him extremely hard, which can’t hurt.

OG: Hunter Rayburn, Pensacola (Fla.): The 3-star recruit from Florida has picked up some big offers of late, including Auburn, Alabama and Clemson. He visited the Tigers last weekend and as we’ve previously reported all indications are that went well. He’s expected to return for an official visit in the near future. A lot of schools are involved, but Auburn is very much in the thick of things. Rayburn is the No. 24 guard nationally in the 247Sports Composite but his offer list suggests colleges greatly value him.

OG: William Putnam, Tampa (Fla.) Plant: Putnam is a big-time recruit and currently sits inside the top 100 of the 247Sports Composite. He visited Auburn earlier this year and plans to return Saturday for Big Cat Weekend. FSU and Miami seem to be getting the most buzz right now with Florida being another program to watch. But at Auburn, there is a feeling the Tigers are in this a lot more than people think. This weekend could go a long way to determining if they are correct with that assessment. Also a standout wrestler, Putnam is one of the strongest and most intelligent players in the class.

OT: Adrian Medley, Pensacola (Fla.): Auburn visited Medley twice this spring and the Tigers seem to have him much higher on the board than his 3-star rating would suggest. He visited Auburn last weekend and the Tigers are very much in the mix right now. In fact, they’re one of his favorites. Florida and FSU are two other programs to watch. Auburn would love to land both Medley and Rayburn (see above), his teammate. They’ve made these two prospects priority recruits and it very well could pay off. Medley is listed at 6-feet-4, which makes one think guard could be in his future. But his skillset suggests he’ll be a tackle.

DE/DT: Justin Eboigbe, Forest Park (Ga.): A lot of schools are involved with the No. 106 recruit nationally in the 247Sports Composite but it seems as though Auburn has as good a shot as anyone at this point. He grew up a Tigers fan, has visited Auburn two known times this year, has bonded with defensive line coach Rodney Garner and is a longtime fan of Tigers coach Gus Malzahn. Add it all up and it’s obvious Auburn is going to be a factor in this recruitment — and very well might be the favorite. Eboigbe could play end or tackle and that may depend greatly on how much more he grows.

DE: Colby Wooden, Lawrenceville (Ga.) Archer: The 3-star defender calls Auburn and Clemson his co-leaders and he plans to announce a commitment in August. Wooden, who will be at Auburn on Saturday, is extremely close with the Auburn staff and most recently visited for the A-Day spring game. Clemson has done an outstanding job recruiting him so this is no sure thing. Pappoe is doing his part to help. He told us recently Wooden is a big target of his. Wooden said Pappoe’s recruitment of him has had an impact thus far. It’s a battle but Auburn has a real shot to land him.

DE/DT: Jaren Handy, Hattiesburg (Miss.): A 4-star recruit who checks in as the No. 109 prospect in the country, Handy is a huge Tigers target. He visited Auburn earlier this year and is back this week. Handy won’t say who leads, only that Alabama is his No. 2 and that neither Mississippi State or Ole Miss is on top. He did add that Auburn definitely is in his top five. Of Auburn, he told us he has gotten a “different” feel on campus than he has at any other school. If the Tigers impress him and he continues to visit, it’s conceivable he could end up in the class.

DE: Jamond Gordon, Meridian (Miss.): The No. 17 recruit in Mississippi, Gordon de-committed from Ole Miss last week and Auburn is a strong contender. The Tigers like him a lot and visited his school twice this spring. Gordon visited Auburn earlier this year and will return Saturday. Following his de-commitment, he now wants to take a step back and take his time before making a final decision. Not only will Auburn get him on campus this weekend, he told Auburn Undercover he plans to return for an official visit — probably in the fall.

BUCK: Derick Hall, Gulfport (Miss.): Hall, an Under Armour All-American, probably is Auburn’s top buck target. Right now, Auburn and Mississippi State stand out from the pack but others such as Florida State and Ole Miss remain involved. If Alabama were to offer, it also could become a factor. Hall has visited the Tigers three times already this year and plans to return this weekend. One important note about his recruitment: He told us he is closer to Tigers coach Gus Malzahn than any head coach recruiting him. That could go a long way in this recruitment. Hall might have a decision this summer.

LB: Owen Pappoe, Grayson (Ga.): The 5-star recruit committed to Auburn over Georgia on May 1. At this time, he seems extremely solid to the Tigers. In fact, he has been actively recruiting for them as we’ve pointed out in this article and others. Pappoe is extremely close with Auburn linebackers coach Travis Williams and that relationship was huge in landing his verbal. Also, the opportunity to play early was a contributing factor. Pappoe is one of the most athletic recruits nationally in the 2019 class. Look for him to attend Big Cat Weekend on Saturday.

LB: Kalen DeLoach, Savannah (Ga.) Islands: Auburn is a contender for the 4-star backer from Georgia. Earlier this week, we reported he’d be at Big Cat Weekend on Saturday. We are now told that may not quite be set in stone. In any event, the Tigers are working hard on the No. 19 outside backer in the 247Sports Composite. He visited Auburn earlier this year and the Tigers have made multiple stops at his school in 2018. Right now, South Carolina leads in the 247Sports Crystal Ball and appears to be the favorite. DeLoach is a really good prospect that Auburn would love to have on board.

LB: Trezmen Marshall, Homerville (Ga.) Clinch County: Auburn offered the top-100 recruit a year ago then went 12 months without hearing from him. But after Pappoe — a good friend of his — committed to the Tigers, they started talking to Marshall and he started to listen. Marshall recently visited and could return again soon. Getting him on campus the first time was big. Getting him there a second time might signal legitimate interest from Marshall. With Pappoe and Williams, Auburn’s linebackers coach, working him hard the Tigers appear to have a realistic shot here. It won’t be easy, but they’re in it now.
