While Justyn Ross is ranked as the top wide receiver prospect in the state by most recruiting services, his recruitment remains a mystery. Ross is waiting for his mother to return from her military stay in Kuwait this summer so they can narrow down his list of offers to some contenders. However, he has said Alabama and Auburn recruit him harder than any other school.

I would be completely happy with a WR class made up of only instate guys Fuqua, Jackson, Ross and Williams. Not gonna happen tho

Auburn offers Heisman Trophy winner's nephew, Hoover WR Shedrick Jackson (AL.com)
quote:

Auburn has offered Shedrick Jackson, a receiver from defending Class 7A champion Hoover, per his Twitter page.

The 6-foot-2, 200-pound Jackson is the nephew of Auburn Heisman Trophy winner Bo Jackson and has been a key part of the Hoover offense for the past two seasons.

"It's exciting and its a great opportunity just like the rest of my offers and just makes me want to get even better every day," Shedrick Jackson told AL.com.

"I don't have any leaders or anything. I am taking my time and trying to focus on getting better."

Jackson hauled in 43 receptions for 661 yards and three touchdowns last season and had four receptions for the Bucs in the AHSAA Class 7A state championship win over McGill-Toolen in December.

"I think he's just starting to break the surface on some of the stuff he can do on the football field," Hoover wide receivers coach Aryvia Holmes told AL.com earlier this spring. "Probably the fastest kid on our football team and the strongest kid pound for pound. I haven't coached anybody like him to be honest with you. What he can do -- explosiveness, power -- he's just a different type of receiver. He's a speed, down-the-field guy but you can hand him a jet sweep and he can run through tackles too. He's just a different animal. It's obviously genetic for sure."

Jackson is a three-star recruit in the 247Sports rankings and ranked as the No. 9 player in the state. Memphis, Georgia Tech, Mississippi State and Troy are among Jackson's other offers.

Alabama leads for rising junior LB King Mwikuta, but Auburn not far behind (AL.com)
quote:

One of the region's top prospects in the 2019 class has Alabama as his leader.

Auburn isn't too far behind, though, for LaGrange, Ga., linebacker King Mwikuta.

Mwikuta, a 6-foot-4, 220-pound four-star recruit ranked as the country's No. 70 overall recruit and No. 5 outside linebacker, has Alabama on top followed by Georgia, Auburn, Florida State and Clemson in that order, he said Saturday after Auburn's A-Day game.

Mwikuta, who aspires a career in radiology, is being recruited to Auburn to play the BUCK position (defensive end/linebacker hybrid). He has made the close trip from LaGrange to Auburn numerous times.

"First, their practice (stands out), I can say that," Mwikuta said. "People around, fans, coaches. I can say the culture is good. I always harp on that when I come here. I say the culture is good around here. That's one of the things I look for in a school, the doctoral school. The culture around, you can't have bad culture because that brings bad habits around."

But Alabama, a school which offered in January, still leads. Mwikuta has made multiple trips to Tuscaloosa this spring.

"They're top of the list right now," he said. "They're going to win regardless of the situation."

What makes Alabama his leader?

"I like (outside linebackers) coach Tosh (Lupoi) a lot over there and (secondary) coach (Derrick) Ansley," Mwikuta said. "That's really the school that started recruiting me as a linebacker and I just learned how to play in open space and open field. I like that move from a five, (having) hand in the dirt to a 'wide nine' (spread out) standing up and rushing the quarterback. I like that."

Mwikuta wants to make an early commitment, but not too early. He said he's targeting a commitment around this time next year.

Overnight visit to Auburn has Tigers in Tannor's top 5 (Rivals)
quote:

Caleb Tannor visited Auburn in early April and watched the Tigers practice, but he would have liked to have seen more of the campus and talked more with the coaches.

So Tannor, a weakside defensive end from Miller Grove in Lithonia, Ga., returned to Auburn Saturday afternoon for an overnight visit.

“I came after the spring game and it went really good,” Tannor said. “I got to spend a lot of time with the coaches.”

Tanner met extensively with Auburn linebackers coach Travis Williams, area recruiter Larry Porter and defensive line coach Rodney Garner. He also met with defensive coordinator Kevin Steele and coach Gus Malzahn.

“I spent a lot of time with Coach T-Will,” Tannor said. “We sat and talked and played Madden a little bit, basically just hung out. I like Coach T-Will a lot. Him and the rest of the coaches give out good impressions.”

Good enough to list the Tigers among his top schools.

“I like Auburn a lot,” Tannor said. “I like the campus a lot and the indoor facility and dorms. I like everything at Auburn. They are one of my top schools and I’ll definitely be back for another visit.”

Tannor said Auburn, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee and Missouri make up his top five, but didn’t list a leader of the group and isn’t in a hurry to do so.

“I’m not in a rush,” Tannor said. “I’m going to wait it out.”

Tannor, who stands 6-foot-3 and weighs 235 pounds, is scheduled to visit Tennessee on Friday.

Power 5 trio first offers in for 2019 edge prospect Mohamoud Diabate (Scout)
quote:

Not many in the recruiting world knew of Mohamoud Diabate before the 2016 season, but the Auburn (Ala.) High edge talent had a productive year for the Tigers and the recruiting attention has followed.

Virginia kicked off the process with an offer at the end of February and SEC programs Mississippi State as well as Vanderbilt have since followed early on the rising junior's offer list.

"Coaches say they like my size, speed, versatility, motor," Diabate, who flashed those traits at The Opening Atlanta (video above), said. "I think speed is my biggest asset, my motor is really great too, because I simply won't stop between the whistles.

"Being 6-4 definitely helps when you're trying to keep blockers off of you."

The long and lean pass rusher, who has yet to visit any of the programs that have verbally offered him a scholarship, does see room to up his stock even more as he hits various camps into the spring evaluation period.

"I need improvement in run protection and I think my technique has room to improve," he said. "There's always something to improve."

Diabate, who ran a laser-timed 4.69-second 40 yard dash time at The Opening Atlanta, is approaching the recruiting process one step at a time. He wants to take visits to several schools before forming a true opinion on where they may stand at this early juncture.

There is no timetable for a decision.

Scout's Take

Diabate is a long and lean pass rusher who can stress the edge of an offensive line with his hand in the ground or from a stand up position. His 6-foot-4 frame and sheer athleticism allows him to get to the passer quicker than most, with the length and range to help make up for a lack of polish early in his prep career. Diabate plays with a high motor and runs very well for his size, allowing him to make plays all over the field. With better leverage and added bulk to his frame before the next level, he can be a force fairly early in his college career.

Name to watch in the 2019 class. Another local kid who will probably end up a 4*

KN has update on 3* Buck target Caleb Tannor. Tannor has visited three times in the last month including an overnight stay on A-Day. Tannor says he's really comfortable at Auburn. Rodney Garner and Travis Williams have made him a priority. Apparently he spent hours playing video games in Williams office. Kenney Britt ended up his unofficial player host. Tannor says the facilities and the relationships between players and coaches are what stand out about Auburn. Says Georgia, Alabama and Auburn are recruiting him the hardest. Doesn't have an official list of leaders and plans to commit after senior season.

He will end up a top 200 possibly 100 recruit in the rankings if Alabama, Georgia and Auburn all after him really hard. Sounds like we are off to strong start but gonna be a battle for this guy

NCAA vote clears way for early signing period in football (AL.com)
quote:

The NCAA Division I Council has approved an early signing period for football, it was announced Friday.

The NCAA's approval of the early signing period is merely a recommendation, as the Collegiate Commissioners Association -- which governs the National Letter of Intent program -- must also sign off on the change at its June meeting before it can take effect. However, Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby said in a conference call with media Friday that there was no reason to believe that wouldn't happen.

"We have done the advance work with the Collegiate Commissioners Association that manages the National Letter of Intent program," Bowlsby said. "We have every expectation that the December date will be approved."

The Council had been meeting in Indianapolis this week to discuss several matters, including the early signing period. The American Football Coaches Association endorsed the measure at its annual convention in San Antonio in January.

Under the new rules, there would be a 72-hour signing period for high school seniors beginning on the third Wednesday in December, the same period previously reserved for mid-year junior-college transfers. The early February signing period would remain as is, and begin on the first Wednesday of that month.

The initial proposal also included a June signing period for rising high school seniors in football, but that was met with heavy opposition. Bowlsby said he and his fellow college football commissioners will continue to look at possible changes to the signing date model.

"We know that approximately 70 percent of college football prospects make their decision prior to the middle of football season in their senior year," Bowlsby said. "Those young people need to have an option available to them to terminate their recruitment process earlier than December. We had originally proposed a June date, and there was resistance to that, especially among coaching groups. But we're going to continue to gather data and determine whether or not we can find an alternate that is earlier and more accommodating to those that want to conclude the recruitment process."

One possible drawback to an early signing date is that recruits who sign in December might be locked in if that program's coach is fired or takes another job after signing day. Bowlsby said "waiver processes in place" in such instances.

Such occurrences are common in basketball, which has a November signing date. Division I council president Jim Phillips, the athletic director at Northwestern, said making the same stipulations in football would not be a problem.

"There's nothing that compares to football, but the closest thing is men's basketball," Phillips said. "... We've gone through that set of data, and we're able to let student-athletes re-open their recruiting process when a coaching change occurs. It's been a productive process, for the most part. We see that coming to fruition in football as well."

Early signing date for football gets mostly thumbs up from Alabama high school coaches (AL.com)
quote:

Big changes appear to be coming to the football recruiting calendar, which has led to mixed reactions from state high school coaches.

The NCAA Division I Council approved a recommendation for a football early signing period today, which would allow seniors to sign during a 72-hour period beginning the third Wednesday of December.

The Collegiate Commissioners Association, which governs the National Letter of Intent program, must also sign off on the change at its June meeting before it can take effect. Currently, players cannot sign until the first Wednesday in February.

"Anything that gives our kids an opportunity to do what's best for them, I'm in absolute support of," James Clemens coach Wade Waldrop said. "It's just another opportunity for a high school athlete to take care of their business sooner than February. It gives those kids more security and more opportunity to make those decisions quicker and do what's best for them quicker and not be hanging on longer."

Waldrop's 2017 class included SEC signees LaBryan Ray (Alabama), Kyriq McDonald (Alabama, early enrollee) and Monty Rice (Georgia, after a late flip from LSU).

"A kid doesn't have to sign on that (December) date," Waldrop said. "Nobody is making them sign on that date. But if that option is on the table, and a kid knows what they want to do, then I think it's great that they're going to have the opportunity to do that."

Daphne coach and former Alabama defensive lineman Kenny King said the December date would have intrigued him as a high school player.

"I think I would have (signed early)," he said. "I think it would be good to go and get it behind you and focus on the job at hand."

Davidson coach Fred Riley, who spent nine years in the college ranks during the 1980s, noted that an early signing date falls in line with the increasing popularity of early enrollment.

"I have no problem with the December date," he said. "I don't see a big deal with it, one way or the other. The last few years, a lot of our kids have graduated in December anyhow and moved on, so it's beneficial for them. I don't see it affecting how we do things at all."

The early signing period would appear to benefit mid-major teams whose commitments are sometimes poached by Power Five programs in the lead up to National Signing Day.

"Some coaches are going to be glad because you don't lose as many guys toward the end of the signing period," Riley said, "where you have to go back and try to figure out which direction you're going to go. It gives them a chance, right before the new year, to regroup and say, 'OK, we've lost our top quarterback prospect. We're going to pursue our second one as hard as we can. Who's the next one we're really going to go for and do we have a chance to get him?' It makes recruiting meetings a little different in terms of how they make those type decisions."

One drawback to an earlier signing date is that the college coaching carousel tends to be very active during December and January. A player who signs early could find himself bound to a school with a new coaching staff that he never interacted with. That scenario concerns two Birmingham-area prep coaches.

"I don't think it's what's best for kids," Mountain Brook's Chris Yeager said. "I think that kids can make a better decision after the college season is over because of the nature of college coaches. The kids want to know who they're playing for. If I was a player, especially a highly sought-after player, I would not make a decision until after the bowls. If having an early signing day makes sense, then why don't they have an early NFL Draft? You've got to have all the information."

Thompson coach Mark Freeman is also wary of how college coaching turnover will affect early signees.

"You can preach and preach to the kids, 'Don't go somewhere because of a coach,'" he said, "but there's certain coaches who draw a kid because of their success and character. Those guys are professionals at what they do. The recruiting process with these big schools is a very organized system of knowing what to say and how to say it. I think kids get taken in by it even with the advice your give."

As part of the NCAA proposal, a first window for official visits would run from April of a player's junior year through the Sunday before the last Wednesday in June. Under current rules, players cannot take an official visit until their first day of senior classes.

Freeman, who likes the December signing date, said he couldn't fully agree with earlier visitation periods.

"I like the way it used to be when the kids were seniors and colleges could come through and recruit them," he said. "Now you see eighth graders getting offers. It takes a mature kid to handle that exposure. I don't feel good with anything that disrupts the total team. The thing that worries me is it almost feels like we're starting to individualize high school football. I hate that because what I love about coaching is building character and all the cohesiveness of being team that I feel goes a lot further with them in their life."

NCAA eliminates two-a-days

There had also been debate about adding an early signing period in June prior to a player's senior year, but that proposal was voted down.

"The summer date was an issue for all of us," Riley said. "What's to keep a kid from saying, 'Well, I've got my scholarship. I'm not going to play for my high school this year.'? Or they get halfway through the season, the season is going bad and they decide to do what some of these kids have done in college and not play in the bowl game. That was a recipe for disaster."

New Auburn commit Kolbi Fuqua brings 'pit bull' intensity for Cordova (AL.com)
quote:

Just 35 miles northwest of Birmingham up Interstate 22 is one of the better mid-sized football programs in the state.

Aside from a rough stretch in 2012-13, Cordova has won nine or more games every season but three since 2005. The Class 4A Blue Devils went 13-1 in 2015 and 9-3 last fall.

But some athletes fly under the radar from Cordova, one of the best in its class lately. Auburn did sign one-time starting safety Ryan Smith from Cordova in 2010, and Ole Miss signed running back Tim Simon in 2009.

Kolbi Fuqua is under the radar, but in terms of stars and not ability. Ole Miss had offered. Auburn offered last spring. A week ago today, the 6-foot-2, 209-pound Fuqua, a three-star recruit, committed to the Tigers.

"I think he's overlooked," Cordova coach Jimmy Gay said. "I don't understand the three-star, four-star, five-star athletes. If the kid can play, he can play. I don't think those stars will win you any games, the rating system.

"He might be flying under the radar."

HOW IT HAPPENED

Before Auburn's A-Day game, it didn't look like Fuqua would pledge to Auburn just yet. The Tigers had a commitment from Brooks offensive lineman Kam Stutts and it was already a good day.

But Fuqua met with Auburn coaches after the game and talked to reporters and let it be known that he did commit. He made the decision after the game.

Auburn had been his leader for a while. Last Saturday, he pulled the trigger.

RECEIVER OR DEFENSIVE BACK?

Fuqua said he will be a receiver for Auburn. Gay said that Auburn offensive line coach Herb Hand, who recruited Fuqua, likes him as an athlete who can play either side of the ball.

Fuqua had 59 catches for 1,011 yards and seven touchdowns as a junior. He also had seven interceptions and 114 total tackles.

Fuqua took Cordova to the Class 4A Final Four in basketball, and excels in the weight room per Gay.

"He is very coachable," Gay said. "He does what he's asked to do. As far as his athletic ability, he has it. He's a long, rangy kid. He has a nose for the football whether it's him going up as a receiver and catching it or on defense, him playing safety and him coming down to make a tackle or intercepting a pass. He's just one of those special kids who has a nose for the football, and he works hard."

Fuqua will likely get his start on offense, but has the physical frame to play safety in college. Auburn's pursuit of receivers like Justyn Ross, Jacob Copeland and Matthew Hill and how successful that goes could determine how serious of an initial look Fuqua gets at receiver.

His reported 4.95 time in the 40 at the Atlanta Opening Regional could suggest that he'll end up on defense (or maybe grow into a tight end?). His strength lies more with physicality than straight-line speed. Fuqua is definitely a player that looks better in pads when the lights come on.

"I don't think you can go wrong," Gay said. "He's a very talented kid and just has a great nose for the football. He's not afraid of contact, which is what I really love about him."

Better quote from Gay: "The intensity that he brings to the game, he's just like a pit bull out there."

Top Auburn 2019 defensive target King Mwikuta makes interesting guarantees (SECCountry)
quote:

Top 2019 DE/OLB jumps Auburn over FSU

AUBURN, Ala. — King Mwikuta, one of the hottest 2019 prospects up for grabs, made a bold statement following his A-Day visit.

“I ain’t going to miss no home games. That’s a promise,” Mwikuta said. “I can’t miss an Auburn game, unless a hurricane comes through, I’m going to be there.”

Mwikuta is a 6-foot-4, 225-pound outside linebacker from Troup County High and Lagrange, Ga. He visited Auburn about 8 times during his recruitment. He knows the Plains well. He wants to know it a bit more, which is why he plans to make his way back to campus “whenever they want me to,” he said.

His appearance for A-Day was his second visit that week. Mwikuta — pronounced mickoota — attended a Tigers practice earlier in the week and was asking plenty of questions to staff and personnel as he focused in primarily on the defensive line group.

Mwikuta is the No. 5 outside linebacker in the 247Sports composite rankings, but Tigers coaches wants him in the Buck defensive line position.

From what he saw in 2 days on campus in the past week, Mwikuta thinks something special is brewing.

“Like I say all the time, Auburn on top. They’re going to have a good season,” Mwikuta said. “They’re going to be on top. They look good.”

He had a huge smile on his face as he spewed compliments after the spring game, but he also put it all into context.

Mwikuta publicly named Alabama as his leader a few weeks ago, and that hasn’t changed. Georgia’s in-state pull has the Bulldogs hotly contesting for his favorite. Auburn leapfrogged Florida State after the 2-visit week to the Plains.

“Auburn, they’re in my top 3 right now. They moved up ahead of Florida State,” he said. “With Alabama and Georgia, I’ve been up there so many times that I’ve basically fell in love. I’m just waiting for Auburn to show me a little bit more and get some more dogs in this year’s recruiting class.”

How competitive is the race to be Mwikuta’s favorite?

“It’s close. They (Auburn) seem to amaze me every time I come here. Something new always amazes me,” Mwikuta said.

There is plenty of time of the Tigers to make a move up Mwikuta’s leaderboard.

As a 2019 prospect, he isn’t in a major hurry, but he’s also has the talent to be a cornerstone for teams to build their recruiting classes. Mwikuta expects to make h is decision by this time next year, which will give him ample opportunity to recruit players to the program he chooses.

If that program ends up being Auburn, it will be for his close relationship with multiple coaching staff members.

“I like coaches, Coach Malzahn. The culture around here is good. Everybody loves you. You feel like you’re at home,” Mwikuta said. “T-Will. Coach Garner. Coach Malzahn. … They’re cool. They’re laid back. They’re father figures. They look like they could take on a big role in my life. I would just have a real father around my life. I could see them as real role models around my life.”

THE Auburn legacy finally picks up offer

There are Auburn legacies, and then there’s Shedrick Jackson.

Does that last name ring a bell?

Shedrick is the nephew of Auburn legend Bo Jackson. He’s a top-tier recruit in his own right. So far, Jackson is only ranked as a 3-star prospect, but he’s someone I expect to have a flood of offers come in over the next few weeks.

Auburn beat the traffic Thursday, extending an offer to the wide receiver prospect who has long awaited that Tigers’ offer.

“They want to see me in person more. They want to see me in action. They’ve seen it before, but they want to watch me go through spring and develop,” Jackson said last month. “I’ll definitely see them in the spring. Coach (Kodi) Burns will be down, probably coach (Chip) Lindsey and coach (Tim) Horton, so they’ll get to see what I can do then.”

Auburn apparently liked what it saw from the 6-foot-2, 200-pound receiver.

Evaluation period begins today. For those that don't know what it means here's how NCAA defines it
quote:

One hundred sixty-eight (168) evaluation days (216 for U.S. service
academies) (see Bylaw 13.02.7.2) (excluding Memorial Day and
Sundays) selected at the discretion of the member institution and
designated in writing in the office of the director of athletics [as
provided in (1) below]:

(1) An authorized off-campus recruiter may use one evaluation to
assess the prospective student-athlete’s athletics ability and one
evaluation to assess the prospective student-athlete’s academic
qualifications during this evaluation period. If an institution’s
coaching staff member conducts both an athletics and an academic
evaluation of the prospective student-athlete on the same day
during this evaluation period, the institution shall be charged with
the use of an academic evaluation only and shall be permitted to
conduct a second athletics evaluation of the prospective student athlete
on a separate day during this evaluation period.

Basically now assistant coaches can visit high schools to evaluate a player. Expect some more offers to go out over the next month. Guy I am watching is 4* DT Alfred Thomas. If Fehoko picks LSU then I suspect we offer him pretty quickly

KN has recruiting insider up today with some good stuff. Here's summary

- The evaluation period is here which means AU coaches will be hitting the road to check out targets. KN says be on the lookout for new names to pop up. Doesn't expect coaches to be out in full force until May when high school teams start spring practice

- Sounds like 4* WR Matthew Hill is on commit watch. He and his family are real close with AU coaching staff and for once an AU fan wants to play for us. Unfortunately he probably won't be at Big Cat Weekend because he has been invited Under Armour Camp in Maryland that weekend. Still best bet of next commit is Hill and it could happen in the next month or so

- The focus on OL now is OT with 2 guys committed already that are expect to play guard. The Tigers have four top targets: 4* William Barnes, 4* Richard Gouraige, 4* Nick Petit-Frere and 3* John Campbell. Unfortunately AU is trailing for all 4. Barnes and Gouraige are leaning Florida, Campbell trending Miami and Petit-Frere has Notre Dame as #1. Tigers have work to do on these guys but also expect new names to pop up

- AU thinks 4* QB Bo Nix is the #1 QB in the 2019 class (I agree). They also think he is same level as 5* QB Trevor Lawrence. He is the clear top target for next cycle

- Things are looking good for 3* Buck Caleb Tannor but sounds like he is long ways off from committing. He is enjoying the process and plans to release a top 10 soon. Although he claims Bama and UGA are recruiting him hard he might not exactly be a take yet for them specifically Georgia who wants him to camp this summer. As of now AU has made him a clear top target and looks to be the leader

- 3* WR Shedrick Jackson's offer isn't because he's Bo Jackson's nephew. Staff did throrough evaluation and were really impressed with what he did at Army All-American combine in January and the Opening Regional in Atlanta. Felt he had done enough to earn an offer and become a legitimate target. AU feels good about their chances but KN says he seems a bit overwhelmed right now so hard to tell when he might make decision (Georgia Tech also offered this week)

- Texas Tech transfer DT Breiden Fehoko is announcing his commitment Monday at 3 pm CT on Twitter. As of now it's a battle between Auburn & LSU but the Dawgs could become a factor. KN seems to think could go any way right now

- Finally some comments on new rules specifically allowing earlier official visits. KN says don't expect AU to have a ton of early official visitors because don't want kids to use visit early on AU and then go to other places closer to NSD. However it could be a good way to get in earlier on national recruits. It's hard to get kids from far away to visit AU unofficially and by the time they officially visit later in the year Tigers are playing catchup. Earlier official visit could make AU a contender and a prospect more likely to spend money to visit again later. We will see what happens
