Auburn coaches Gus Malzahn, defensive coordinator Kevin Steele take advantage of Senior Bowl trip to see key Mobile prospect (SECCountry)
quote:

Gus Malzahn, Kevin Steele see Mobile DB

Whenever a head coach and defensive coordinator make a recruiting visit, it means something.

When they go see the same recruit twice in the same day, it means even more.

Gus Malzahn and Kevin Steele did just that on Tuesday in Mobile, Ala. They were in south Alabama for Senior Bowl practices, but it also provided a nice recruiting opportunity for the coaching tandem.

Malzahn and Steele swung by Williamson High School to see 3-star cornerback Roger McCreary. Later on in the evening, they stopped by to see McCreary again on an in-home visit. The double dip of school and home visits provided a nice touch for McCreary, he told SEC Country.

McCreary’s official visit plans haven’t changed since the most-recent SEC Country report at the end of last week. He no longer plans to visit Alabama and Tennessee since he was never offered. McCreary will take an official visit this upcoming weekend to N.C. State, who just offered. Duke recently offered and is pushing for an official visit the last weekend. Nothing is finalized yet.

My take: McCreary is Auburn’s to lose.

The numbers crunch is on, so nothing is a given in terms of what the Tigers want to do. But when your head coach and defensive coordinator see a guy twice in a day, even if you’re already in town for an event, it shows where your priorities are at, especially this time of year. McCreary is an exceptional — and let me emphasize exceptional — football talent whose South Alabama commitment shielded the elite level he could’ve been recruited at this fall.

I’m sure the most frustrating element from a fans’ perspective is this: If he’s so high on Auburn, and the Tigers want him, why doesn’t he go ahead and commit?

McCreary is a rare case, likely a byproduct of the new early signing period.

He’s an under-the-radar recruit who was committed to a lower-tier football program. After a standout senior season, he has started to gain recruiting traction for the first time. That means this is really his first round of visits where he’s receiving legitimate 1-on-1 time with players and coaches.

With a few teams offering late in the process, and open weekends available, McCreary wants to take advantage of that opportunity and give him something to gauge against his Auburn official visit.

When that visit (or visits) is complete, I fully expect a commitment to the Tigers — and don’t expect it long after whenever that last visit ends. McCreary has stated in the past he doesn’t have National Signing Day commitment intentions.

Keep an eye out for a more in-depth update on McCreary later Wednesday.

Auburn sees recruiting rankings bump

Boom!

Oh wait, no, Auburn didn’t land a commitment. The Tigers did, however, make a jump in the 247Sports composite rankings recently updated. For the casual recruiting fan, the 247Sports composite ranking aggregates the player rankings from separate recruiting outlets 247Sports, Rivals, Scout and ESPN.

It’s that time of year for each service to put out its year-end players ranking list. Those changes sometimes have a reflection on the team rankings. That’s what happened here.

In this case, Auburn saw slight jump from No. 10 to No. 9, in third among SEC schools.

This thing is far from over, of course. All of the teams in the top-10 are in the hunt for 4-star and 5-star prospects that will cause constant shakeups in the rankings between now and National Signing Day. The Tigers will host many of their hopefuls on official visits this weekend.

Interested to see where things stand after ESPN's update. Probably good news for guys that were at the Under Armour event. Not good news for everyone else

Another day, another 2019 offer — from a familiar place

Auburn has been on an offer tear the last couple days. It shows how laser-focused on the Class of 2019 the staff already is. In the Tuesday notebook, we took a look at some of those most-recent offers in the next recruiting cycle to come.

The Tigers delivered another one.

Kevin Harris, a 4-star linebacker ranked No. 88 overall in the nation, picked up an offer from the Tigers. He’s familiar with the Plains, having visited Auburn for the Iron Bowl along with several of his high school teammates.

Those high school teammates make this offer all-the-more interesting, including another one who Auburn offered earlier in the week.

Harris plays for Grayson High School in metro Atlanta. It’s a program known for churning out college and pro talent. Robert Nkemdiche, Wayne Gallman, Deangelo Gibbs, Jamyest Williams and Breon Dixon were all 4-star prospects from Grayson in the last five recruiting cycles. There are another two dozen 3-stars who have gone onto have solid college careers, or are in the early stages of being promising contributors.

With all that said, the 2019 Grayson class might end as the most star-powered one yet — and Auburn isn’t going to miss out on the recruiting brouhaha that will surround the Rams over the next year.

The school already has 10 prospects ranked as 3-star prospects or better in the rising senior class. Half of those are 4-star or better. One is a 5-star and the No. 5 overall player in the country.

So far, Auburn has offered 7 of the 10:

5-star outside linebacker Owen Pappoe
4-star offensive tackle Wanya Morris
4-star outside linebacker Kevin Harris
4-star safety Kenyatta Watson II
4-star running back Ronald Thompkins
4-star wide receiver Kenyon Jackson
3-star cornerback Jalen Alexander

Each of the seven prospects has been on the Plains in the last year. Most of them attended either or both of the Georgia and Alabama games to end the season in Jordan-Hare Stadium. All of these prospects will be heavily recruited by the blue-blood programs of college football.

Auburn will be a major contender for many of these Grayson products.

Auburn recruiting question of the day: Who will be Auburn’s final 3 commitments? (SECCountry)
quote:

Quick aside for those reading: My Twitter account @benjaminwolk is generally the best place to submit an Auburn Recruiting Question of the Day. It’s not the only option, however. For those loyal to SEC Country Auburn’s recruiting coverage, you may be familiar with my weekly Facebook Live recruiting chats where I hang around and answer any questions for those in attendance.

That’s another great avenue to send me questions to answer for this mailbag.

For programming purposes, it’s important for you to know my new Facebook Live plan. Instead of once a week, leading up to National Signing Day, I’ll have two Facebook Lives per week. The first will be on Thursday night heading into the weekend. We can preview the upcoming official visitors. The second will be Sunday night following the weekend. We can recap those who officially visited.

Anthony, above, reveals a question many will ask.

Which three prospects does Auburn close with in the 2018 class?

Keep in mind that number could grow to four if the Tigers were to go a different direction with safety commit Kolbi Fuqua, or if one of their commitments — Coynis Miller or Matthew Hill — were to make a surprise flip to another school. For the time being, let’s operate as if none of those things will happen and answer Anthony’s question as it was specifically asked.

The final three will come down to a few factors.

Justyn Ross and Quay Walker are the biggest pieces of that puzzle. These are two can’t-miss prospects who the Tigers plan to host on official visits this weekend. The recruiting picture will likely be more clear after this weekend when Auburn has a better feel on each of these prospects.

As of now, the Tigers feel like they’re on the outside looking in for both. With that said, neither one of them has outright made that comment on their own. Still, for the purpose of this discussion, I don’t project either in Auburn’s class.

That makes the decision process easier for a few position groups, especially tight end.

Matt Alaimo took an official visit to the Plains last weekend. Source suggest he would’ve like to commit, but the numbers crunch forced Auburn to request he be patient. That resulted in him taking an official visit to Texas A&M, and it’s possible he takes one to UCLA. If Auburn misses on Ross and Walker, that makes the decision to take a tight end that much easier.

I think Alaimo lands in the class. That’s one.

Roger McCreary had a similar official visit experience to Alaimo. It seemed like he was on commit watch, but it didn’t happen. Still, Gus Malzahn and Kevin Steele made a point to see McCreary twice when they were in Mobile, Ala., for the Senior Bowl. That kind of prioritization speaks for itself, especially when Auburn has such a major need at cornerback.

Count McCreary in. That’s two.

The final spot has to go to a specific position group: tackle. Auburn has been hopeful to add tackles throughout this recruiting cycle. The truth of the matter, however, is the tackle class hasn’t been strong enough to go all-out on any given prospects.

Auburn has found a target, though, with immediate impact potential.

Calvin Anderson, a Rice grad transfer, had dinner with Malzahn and Chip Lindsey the other night. He’s eager to get to Auburn for an official visit. It will most likely be his last official visit, which would be a great sign for the Tigers. The idea of playing in the SEC means a lot to the May graduate.

So that’s how I see it playing out:

3-star tight end Matt Alaimo, Montvale, N.J.
3-star cornerback Roger McCreary, Mobile, Ala.
Rice offensive tackle Calvin Anderson, Houston

Come back with the same question next week? The answer could be quite different.

Not sure Wolk got the Alaimo news yesterday before making this pick

Auburn coaches send clear message to in-state CB Roger McCreary: ‘They really want me’ (SECCountry)
quote:

A few things have changed since Roger McCreary took his official visit to Auburn.

As SEC Country reported last week, McCreary replaced official visits to Tennessee and Alabama because those programs didn’t offer before the scheduled visit dates. McCreary added a North Carolina State official visit after the Wolfpack offered. He’ll take that trip this weekend. Now it’s possible — likely, in fact — that McCreary will use the last weekend to visit Duke.

McCreary said “it’s already in my mind to take” the Duke visit, even though a date hasn’t been set. If he takes that visit, which seems probable, it will push his commitment decision much closer to Feb. 7 than originally anticipated.

Through all this change, however, everything with Auburn has remained the same.

“It’s always that they still want me,” McCreary said. “They just seem like they really want me. It’s cool. They’re recruiting me really hard.”

McCreary felt that Auburn’s interest was at an all-time high Tuesday.

Auburn coach Gus Malzahn and defensive coordinator Kevin Steele visited him at Williamson High School in Mobile, Ala., since they were already in town for the Senior Bowl. They followed that with an in-home visit with McCreary later in the evening. McCreary didn’t want to divulge specifics about his conversations with the coaches, but he was honored to have them in his home.

The in-home time with Malzahn and Steele helped keep another recruiting constant for Auburn.

“Auburn’s still stands on top,” McCreary said. “The reason why Auburn’s on top, well, they were the first SEC school, the first big school, to really give me an offer. It showed me I was important to them. Plus, I’ve been on my official visit so I can see how they actually do things, and I really like it.”

McCreary hasn’t had the standard recruiting process.

Committed to South Alabama until December, the 3-star cornerback didn’t take visits like many of his Class of 2018 companions. He stayed in contact with college coaches, but visits were limited — except to Auburn.

Because of the late recruiting arrival, McCreary doesn’t want to rush into anything. That’s why he’ll take those back-to-back visits to North Carolina State and Duke despite having Auburn on top late in the recruiting cycle.

“I’m looking to see what their defensive strategy is, the depth chart, and how I can fit in with the team. They’re [both] just saying it’s a better opportunity,” McCreary said. “Because my recruiting process started so late, a lot of schools started calling me all at one time and I felt like I needed to weigh all my options out. …

“I don’t know how to describe it. When the process hit, I realized how serious it was and that I needed to take my time on my decision, even though there wasn’t much time left.”

It’s not going to be easy for an out-of-state school to leapfrog the Tigers. But McCreary will need to take those visits before making a final decision.

Whether those schools can offer enough to beat out Auburn remains to be seen.

“That’s something I’m going to have to see in person and see how it goes before I can answer that,” he said.

BREAKING: Auburn lands commitment from instate defensive back day after in-home visit (SECCountry)
quote:

When Auburn coaches went to see Roger McCreary on Tuesday, they left Mobile, Ala., with good news.

McCreary hosted coach Gus Malzahn and defensive coordinator Kevin Steele on his in-home visit. The 3-star cornerback from Williamson High School committed to the Tigers’ coaches during the visit. He was considering keeping the commitment private until taking his official visits to North Carolina State and Duke.

On Wednesday, McCreary reversed course and made his decision public.

“I committed [Tuesday] night when coach Gus came. Oh yeah, he was excited. He ran up to me real fast,” McCreary told SEC Country. “I just wanted to let them know I was excited to commit. I’m 100 percent locked in to Auburn. They were always No. 1 ever since they were there. They have everything there is to want. … I figured, ‘What was the holdup? Why wait?'”

McCreary is the second true cornerback in the Tigers’ 2018 class, joining 4-star cornerback signee Christian Tutt, who has already enrolled early at Auburn.

“Auburn, they’ve been talking to me throughout the whole season,” McCreary said. “And then, during their games, I just really like the atmosphere. I know what the crowd’s like, and I really like that.”

McCreary has been an under-the-radar recruit, but he’s been a high-profile player against his high school competition.

During his senior year, McCreary lit up the stat sheet in multiple ways. He rushed for 802 yards and 8 touchdowns. McCreary added 62 catches for 702 receiving yards and 7 touchdowns. He passed for 600 yards and 6 touchdowns. On defense — where Auburn sees him playing, he had 100 tackles, 8 interceptions and 14 pass breakups.

McCreary’s recruitment picked up in December when he received an offer from Auburn. That offer led to a de-commitment from South Alabama and increased interest from Power 5 schools. McCreary has considered visits to North Carolina State and Duke in the past. He still planned to do that as of Wednesday and Auburn hadn’t told him anything otherwise. It’s uncertain how much the Auburn commitment will change those plans.

McCreary is a big instate find for Steele & Co.

“By me going to the camp, that’s when they started communicating with me throughout the season. They invited me to their games against Alabama and Georgia. I talked to coach T-Will [Travis Williams],” McCreary said after picking up his offer. “He came to visit me last week and talked to me about how the process was going. Coach Steele came and talked about my film and what he thinks I can bring. That’s when Coach Williams called and said they wanted to offer me.”

His stats are insane

In-state DB Roger McCreary commits to Auburn (247)
quote:

Roger McCreary, a speedy defensive back who earned a scholarship offer in December after a strong senior season at Mobile (Ala.) Williamson, has committed to Auburn on Wednesday evening.

He is verbal No. 23 for the Tigers. Fifteen of the committed recruits signed in December. The rest will do so Feb. 7.

The 5-feet-11, 178-pound McCreary is the No. 84 cornerback nationally in the industry generated 247Sports Composite rankings. He holds an 85.16 rating (90 is a 4-star).

In 2017, McCreary had 100 total tackles, 8 interceptions and 14 pass breakups. On offense, he totaled 802 rushing yards, 702 receiving yards, 600 passing yards. His stellar play — and the fact he has good size and speed — got Auburn’s attention.

McCreary has a best recorded 40-yard dash of 4.43 seconds. His times in the 100 meters (10.85 seconds) and 200 (21.96) also are solid.

With McCreary on board, Auburn has the No. 9 recruiting class in the 247Sports rankings.

McCreary becomes the second cornerback and fifth defensive back in the 2018 Auburn class. The other corner, U.S. Army All-American Christian Tutt, enrolled in January.

The Tigers now have approximately two or three spots remaining to fill and some tough choices ahead.

In-state CB commits to Auburn (Rivals)
quote:

AUBURN | Roger McCreary’s big senior season has paid off.

The in-state cornerback from Williamson has committed to Auburn.

McCreary made his commitment Wednesday night, a day after Gus Malzahn, Kevin Steele and Greg Brown visited him in school and in home.

McCreary took an official visit to Auburn Jan. 12-14 and left with the Tigers his leader. He never wavered.

McCreary chose Auburn over interest from Alabama and Tennessee, and offers from N.C. State, Duke, Southern Miss, UAB, Tulane, South Alabama and Western Kentucky.

McCreary, who also is a standout in track, committed to South Alabama early in his senior season, but reopened his recruitment in December after Auburn offered. Alabama and Tennessee both increased attention in McCreary.

McCreary's senior season stats included 100 tackles, had eight interceptions and 14 pass breakups. He also had 802 rushing yards and eight touchdowns, 62 receptions for 702 yards and seven touchdowns and passed for 600 yards and six scores.

It's no wonder SEC schools came calling.

McCreary, who is six feet tall and weighs 190 pounds, is Auburn’s 23rd commitment in the 2018 class and second cornerback, joining four-star and early enrollee Christian Tutt.

'Unlimited potential:' Williamson athlete Roger McCreary commits to Auburn (AL.com)
quote:

Roger McCreary, an All-State athlete at Williamson High School, has committed to play his college football at Auburn.

McCreary and his high school coach, Dedrick Sumpter, said the three-star standout actually committed Tuesday during a Mobile visit by Auburn coaches Gus Malzahn, Kevin Steele and Greg Brown.

McCreary (6-foot, 180 pounds) committed to South Alabama this spring with teammate Jamall Hickbottom but de-committed in December when the Tigers started to show interest. He's also picked up recent offers from N.C. State and Duke.

Check out AL.com's list of the best available senior football players in the state ahead of the second National Signing Day on Feb. 7

"I'm excited," McCreary said. "Auburn's always been No. 1 for me. When they came and saw me this week, I was just kind of thinking, 'What am I waiting for.' I just figured it was time to get it done."

McCreary likely will play cornerback in the SEC. He played all over the field for Williamson this year. He ran for 802 yards and eight TDs, caught 62 passes for 702 yards and seven scores and also completed 50 passes for more than 600 yards and six touchdowns. He played wide receiver, running back and quarterback at different times.

Roger McCreary, a one-time South Alabama commit, took his official visit to Auburn and nearly committed to the Tigers.

On defense, he had eight interceptions and more than 100 tackles. He also was the team's punter.

"The sky is the limit for that guy," Sumpter said. "Whatever he wants to do, he can do. He's just worried about being the best football player he can be. When the lights come on .... I've never had another guy like him. He has unlimited, untapped potential."

McCreary said he is perfectly comfortable playing cornerback and that is where he was playing when Auburn coaches came to watch him during the season.

"It's like a dream to me to be able to go to Auburn," he said. "But I've always tried to stay humble, and I plan on doing the same thing in college."

McCreary has been rising quickly on recruiting boards since the season ended. He is up nine spots to No. 33 on 247's composite rankings of the top senior prospects in the state. The 247 individual site has him rated No. 18.

Auburn has enjoyed a good run in recent years with former Williamson stars on defense. Antonio Coleman, who was McCreary's defensive coordinator this year, was an All-SEC first-team selection in 2008 and 2009 and Nick Fairley won the Lombardi Award and was named the SEC Defensive Player of the Year in 2010.

McCreary is the 23rd player in Auburn's 2018 recruiting class.

What's it like to get offers from Alabama and Auburn on same day? Jackson-Olin LB knows (AL.com)
quote:

Lavonta Bentley tweeted this morning that he expected an "unbelievable, amazing, fantastic day."

He had no idea how prophetic his words would be.

The 6-foot-1, 220-pound Jackson-Olin linebacker received scholarship offers from Auburn, Alabama and LSU today, having started the week with no offers from Power 5 conferences. He is a junior and part of the Class of 2019.

"It's been great," he said this afternoon. "It feels great to know that these big, SEC schools want me and think I can help their program. ... It's a blessing."

The 6-foot-1, 220-pound linebacker started the week as a relatively unknown recruit, a high school junior dreaming of one day playing college football. Then, Oregon offered him a scholarship. Then came an offer from Florida Atlantic, coached by former Alabama assistant Lane Kiffin.

Bentley played at Parker the last two years, logging time at linebacker, fullback and running back. He transferred to Jackson-Olin when the second semester began earlier this month.

Jackson-Olin coach Tim Vakakes said the Mustangs were impressed with Bentley's aggressiveness and toughness when they had to game-plan for him and play against him.

"He's a striker," Vakakes said. "He's a very strong, very physical player. (Parker) Coach (Andre) Robinson and his staff did a heck of a job with him and put him in position to make plays."

Jackson-Olin has become a must-stop on the for college recruiters recently, with 2017 linebacker T.D. Moultry signing with Auburn, 2018 defensive lineman Coynis Miller committed to Auburn, and 2019 prospects Jammal Abrams and A.J. Toney also having Division I offers.

Hopefully Bentley & Robinson will make it four straight years AU lands someone from Jackson-Olin

In-state, 4-star DE Malik Langham talks Alabama visit, Auburn offer (AL.com)
quote:

Standing next to Alabama's most recent national championship trophy, Malik Langham couldn't help but envision a possible future in Tuscaloosa.

The Lee-Huntsville 2018, four-star defensive end had the chance to pose with the Crimson Tide's title hardware during his official visit to Alabama this past weekend.

"Having the championship trophy in front of you, it was cool; it made me want to be a part of that," he said.

The 6-foot-5 1/2, 265-pound Langham was making the second of four official visits in the lead up to National Signing Day on Feb. 7. He went to Vanderbilt two weeks ago and has upcoming stops at Florida and Tennessee.

The Alabama visit came about seven weeks after the Crimson Tide offered. Langham spent time with defensive linemen LaBryan Ray and Quinnen Williams.

"It went good," Langham said. "I spent more time with the coaches, hung out with the players and got to see the academic side."

And, of course, no Alabama trip would be complete without talking to head coach Nick Saban.

"He's a very genuine guy," Langham said. "He's a business man. He's very calm and collected off the field. He hangs out with everybody and has a good time."

Auburn offered Langham on Friday. He'll be unable to visit the Plains due to his visit schedule being booked.

"It was kind of a surprise because they stopped recruiting me for a long period of time," Langham said. "When it came through, it surprised me."

Among those making a trip to Huntsville to see Langham over the past week were Florida defensive coordinator Todd Grantham and defensive line coach Sal Sunseri, and Miami defensive line coach Craig Kuligowski.

Langham reiterated his plan to wait until NSD to announce his choice.

"I just take one thing at a time," he said. "I'm blessed to have all these schools offer and want me. I'm taking my time.

Langham is rated the nation's No. 9 strong-side defensive end and No. 222 overall recruit for 2018 by 247Sports. He is No. 11 on AL.com's A-List of the state's top senior prospects.

Tray Matthews says ‘sky’s the limit’ for Auburn early enrollee DB Smoke Monday (SECCountry)
quote:

MOBILE, Ala. — When Tray Matthews was asked this week who could step up and replace him as a leader in Auburn football’s secondary, the first name out of his mouth was a surprise.

He mentioned two veteran defensive backs who will most likely take up starting jobs next season. But he led off with one who hasn’t even played a down of college football yet — Quindarious “Smoke” Monday.

“I feel like there’s a lot of good talent,” Matthews said Tuesday at Senior Bowl media day. “You’ve got young Smoke, who is going to play a little safety. You’ve got Daniel Thomas, who has some experience. You have Jeremiah Dinson, who can also move to the safety position. I feel like any of those guys can fill the void.”

Monday enrolled early at Auburn and got to spend some practice time with Matthews, who started three seasons as Auburn’s vocal, hard-hitting safety.

The Under Armour All-American will immediately compete for a starting job in the place of Matthews and Stephen Roberts, who are both off to the NFL after their senior seasons. Auburn coaches believe Monday has the skill set that would’ve made him an asset for the secondary in 2017.

“He really plays with an edge and has a great personality,” Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said in December. “We’re very excited about him.”

Monday, an Atlanta native, made a name for himself in high school with his physical nature and versatility across a secondary. Then there’s his “Smoke” nickname, which he’ll officially go by at Auburn — much like sophomore defensive end Markaviest “Big Kat” Bryant.

“Both those guys are excellent players, and both of them will probably play in the NFL,” Malzahn said.

But what Matthews likes most of all is Monday’s attitude.

“He’s got the confidence off the bat like I did,” Matthews said. “I feel like he’ll be in a good spot.”

Monday showed that off on Auburn’s campus before he even became a full member of the team. During his official visit, he told reporters “when I get my rhythm, it’s going to be hard to stop me.” He also talked about raising the standard that was set by Matthews and Roberts at safety.

“I’m going to come in and grind… just because they’re leaving, I got to fill their shoes,” Monday said. “I mean, they did a great job this year, so I just got to come next year and do way better than they did.”

Matthews believes that if his fellow Georgia safety can stay on the right path, he’ll have a highly successful career on the Plains.

“If he stays out of trouble and everything, the sky’s the limit. I mean, he’s not a troublemaker or anything,” Matthews said. “But I’m just saying, the sky’s the limit for him.”

So we are gonna have a "Smoke" & a "Big Kat" officially on the roster next year
