Auburn recruiting question of the day: What are Tigers’ biggest needs on both sides of ball? (SECCountry)
quote:

This is a multi-part question, but I’ll try to hit the high points of all of it.

The biggest positional need on offense, without question: tackle.

Auburn didn’t sign any true tackles in the early signing period. Kam Stutts probably could fill that slot down the line, if needed, but he’s much more likely to play guard. So Auburn will search for tackles leading up to National Signing Day.

Here are the key names to watch.

4-star Richard Gouraige (Florida commit)
4-star William Barnes
4-star Dylan Wonnum
3-star Jalen Goss

If Auburn were to miss on a few, there may be other targets who emerge, but those are the core four right now.

On defense, an argument can be made for more defensive line depth. But, as February approaches, Auburn will focus most of its attention on defensive backs, specifically at cornerback.

The Tigers inked three potential safeties during the early signing period — Quindarious Monday, Jamien Sherwood and Josh Marsh. Marsh, however, could end up as a linebacker, so it’s possible Auburn keeps its eyes on a few safety-cornerback hybrid prospects.

These are the cornerbacks to monitor down the stretch.

3-star JUCO Benjie Franklin
3-star Joe Foucha
3-star CD Daniels
3-star Cam Taylor

As for the dream targets, let’s loop them into your previous two questions. There is one tackle and one cornerback fitting that description. Auburn appears to be long shots for both right now, but expect to see each of them on the Plains in January or February.

5-star tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere
4-star cornerback/safety Kelvin Joseph

Day 2 Under Armour All-American Top Performers (247)
quote:

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — The second practice of Under Armour All-America week is in the books. The all-star game features over 90 of the top football prospects in the nation. 247Sports brings you the top performers from the second workout of the week.

ALPHA DOG

Tampa (Fla.) Berkeley Prep five-star offensive tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere roared back with a stellar performance Monday after solid showing during the first workout of the week. The 6-foot-5, 270-pound Petit-Frere played much more aggression during the second practice and used his elite athleticism to stymie pass rushers. One of Petit-Frere’s highlight plays was when he slung Alabama defensive end signee to the ground. The potential that Petit-Frere showed on Monday is why 247Sports ranks him as the nation’s No. 1 offensive tackle.

NEXT FIVE ON OFFENSE

1. WR Justin Shorter: The Penn State signee was very much in discussion for ‘Alpha Dog’ honors after an impressive one-handed touchdown catch during red zone work and long catch where he went over top of the cornerback. The 6-foot-4, 215-pound speedster is a physically imposing receiver that certainly can bust the top off a defense, but Monday he did an excellent jump showing his quarterbacks a big target for intermediate completions.

2. OL Tommy Brown: The Alabama signee moved from tackle to guard on Monday, where he had significantly more success. The massive 6-foot-6, 315-pound rarely lost a rep during one-on-ones. Once Brown gets his hands on a defensive linemen, he’s typically able to control them. When on the outside at tackle, Brown sometimes struggles with speed rushes.

3. TE Brevin Jordan: The Miami signee had the play of the day, a one-handed snag up the seam for a touchdown. Jordan, a 6-foot-3, 250-pound prospect out of Las Vegas, Nev., is a reliable target that is athletic enough to create separation from linebackers and safeties in coverage.

4. RB Maurice Washington: The 6-foot, 175-pound Cedar Hill (Texas) Trinity Christian product was able to get free down the seam for a big gain as a receiver out of the backfield. Washington also exploded around the left end nice run as well.

5. QB Joey Gatewood: It was a wet and windy day, but the Auburn signee was able to throw the ball the best of all the quarterbacks on Monday. However, it was the 6-foot-4, 235-pounder’s running ability that really impressed. Gatewood got out in the open field a few times on designed runs where his speed allowed him to rip off big gains.

TOP FIVE ON DEFENSE

1. DE Eyabi Anoma: Once the scrimmage portion of the practice rolled around, the Alabama signee started to make his presence felt. The five-star recruit used his elite speed off the edge to consistently disrupt the offense. The 6-foot-5, 235-pound Anoma is clearly the most athletic defensive lineman in the game.

2. CB Trey Dean: It was another strong performance for the Florida signee, who was able to come up with an interception. Through two days of practice, it’s clear Dean is not afraid to mix it up with receivers, which resulted in a fight on Monday. The 6-foot-2, 180-pound prospect’s length certainly helps when in coverage.

3. CB Olaijah Griffin: The former UCLA commit certainly made a case for the top overall defensive back on Monday, nipping at Dean’s heals. The California native had his own interception as well as pass breakups on the day. Griffin’s quickness and aggressive play gives receivers fits trying to shake free.

4. S Quindarious Monday: The Auburn signee brings good size to the back end of the defense at 6-foot-3, 190-pounder, and it helped during the second practice. Monday recorded a pair of interceptions on the day. The Georgia native looks to be at his best when allow to read and react in the secondary.

5. DE Jayson Oweh: The Blairstown (N.J.) Blair Academy product took over a portion of the scrimmage on Monday. Oweh, a 6-foot-5, 235-pounder known for his pass rushing ability, did an excellent job stuffing run after run. New to football, Oweh is another with plenty of upside moving forward.

Other Notes…

— Two Florida State signees that had a strong day were cornerback Anthony Lytton and defensive tackle Robert Cooper. Lytton continues to stay attached to receivers to make plays, while Cooper is a short, squat, and disruptive force on the interior of the defensive line.

— Wide receiver Justyn Ross had a good showing during one-on-ones making tough, contested catches. The 6-foot-4, 200-pound is a big target for quarterbacks to throw to.

— Miami offensive guard signee Delone Scaife had a very good showing during one-on-ones winning several reps. The 6-foot-3, 320-pound prospect has the potential to play early with the Hurricanes.

— Clemson five-star defensive end signee KJ Henry was close to making our top perform after an impressive showing during one-on-ones. The 6-foot-5, 235-pound Henry is another quick edge rusher that can cause havoc.

The Day 2 QB rankings VIP but they had Joey Gatewood #1. Said he was the one quarterback that looked unaffected by the bad weather. Praised his arm strength

Day 3 Under Armour All-American Top Performers (247)
quote:

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — The third practice of Under Armour All-America week is in the books. The all-star game features over 90 of the top high school football prospects in the nation. 247Sports brings you the top performers from the final full workout of the week.

ALPHA DOG

Penn State five-star wide receiver signee Justin Shorter is simply too physically gifted for defensive backs to slow. The 6-foot-4, 215-pound New Jersey product brings a unique combination of size, speed, and strength. Shorter is nearly unstoppable on slant routes given his size, and he continues to catch hitches, shake off the defender to turn up field for big gains.

NEXT FIVE ON OFFENSE

1. OT Nicholas Petit-Frere: The five-star out of Florida continued play at a high-level on Tuesday. The 6-foot-5, 270-pound Petit-Frere is an elite athlete at left tackle that can handle speed rushes and can reset quickly to stuff counter moves. Petit-Frere continues to play with high-energy and aggression throughout the day.

2. RB Ricky Slade: The Penn State signee was simply unstoppable during one-on-one drills against linebackers. Exploding out of his breaks, Slade left defenders in his wake as he continued to get open down the field for big gains in the passing game. The Virginia native is at his best when allowed to work in space.

3. TE Brevin Jordan: It was another consistent day for the Miami signee that is the most natural pass catcher in the tight end group. Jordan had a highlight reel catch during red zone work where he went high above safety BJ Foster for a very impressive touchdown catch. Jordan is a serious weapon in the passing attack.

4. WR Anthony Schwartz: The speedy track start had his best day of the week on Tuesday, which included perhaps the day’s best play. Schwartz went over the top of cornerback Chandler Jones in the corner of the end zone on a fade to snatch the ball for the score. Schwartz earlier used a nifty double move to shake free for a long touchdown in one-on-ones.

5. RB Maurice Washington: The Texas native put up another strong day as he blew past linebackers during one-on-one passing drills. The 6-foot, 175-pound has great burst, which certainly noticeable when he runs routes.

TOP FIVE ON DEFENSE

1. CB Asante Samuel Jr.: The Florida State signee was very active on Tuesday recording several pass breakups. The 5-foot-9, 170-pound prospects is quick and competes for the ball until the very end of the play. Samuel also came up with an interception where he simply undercut the route during seven-on-seven play.

2. S DeMarvion Overshown: The Texas commit came alive Tuesday going high to nearly intercept deep post. Later, Overshown used his length and athleticism to bat a ball on a tricky reverse pass. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound Overshown might be the best looking safety in the game on the off.

3. CB Anthony Lytton: The Florida State signee continues to stay attached to receivers. The 5-foot-10, 175-pounder is another that doesn’t have elite size, but his quickness and tenacious playing style help him compete against better receivers.

4. DE Jayson Oweh: The four-star out of New Jersey continues to shine during the scrimmage portion of practice. The 6-foot-5, 235-pound prospect has elite tools and seems to have a knack for making plays despite being relatively new to the game.

5. LB Quay Walker: The Alabama commit showed his elite athleticism as he ran step for step with Ricky Slade on a wheel route during the scrimmage portion of practice to record a pass breakup. The 6-foot-4, 220-pound Walker also poked the ball out of tight end Brevin Jordan’s hands on a crossing route. Walker looks to be the best athlete of the linebackers in the game.

Other Notes…

— Tucker (Ga.) offensive tackle Dylan Wonnum was impressive during his one-on-one reps and followed that up with a strong scrimmage performance. The 6-foot-5, 280-pound four-star has quietly had one of the better weeks of the offensive linemen.

— Phenix City (Ala.) Central four-star wide receiver Justyn Ross continues to impress during one-on-ones. The 6-foot-4, 200-pound target is able to create separation to give his quarterbacks easy throws.

— Gardena (Calif.) Serra four-star linebacker Merlin Robertson made a few plays in coverage on Tuesday. The 6-foot-3, 235-pounder is known more for his ability to stuff the run, so it was surprising to see how well he stuck to running backs out of the backfield.

— Minnesota offensive tackle signee Daniel Faalele had his best day of the week Tuesday as the 6-foot-8, 400-pound prospect began to win his fair share of one-on-one reps. The massive tackle is another that’s new to the game and still developing.

— Baylor cornerback signee BJ Hanspard registered a solid performance. The Texas native was able to get his hands on a few passes.

There was another VIP update on AU's top commits & targets performances by 247 yesterday. Here's summary

Commits

4* QB Joey Gatewood - Praised his arm strength & how he handled the bad weather. Also rain let him show some of his abilities as a ball carrier which were also impressive. #1 QB for Day 2

4* WR Matthew Hill - Hill did better day 2 after some drops day 1. Did a good job again of getting separation but this time finished the plays

4* DT Coynis Miller - Step back for Miller day 2. Alabama signee Tommy Brown (who was terrible day 1) got best of him a couple times & Miller didn't really have any counters after initial contact. Against other blockers tho he apparently performed better

4* S Quindarious Monday - Built on a strong first day with another good day yesterday. Had a pair of interceptions

Targets

5* OT Nicholas Petite-Frere - Followed up a good day 1 with a dominant day 2 earning Alpha Dog honors. His great length helps him with speed rushers but apparently yesterday he showed more strength and handled power moves better. Called him a special talent

4* WR Justyn Ross - Got more work in yesterday and open early & often. Had best route of day on a slant & go for a TD. Showed his physicality making multiple contested catches

4* WR Anthony Schwartz - For 2nd straight day Schwartz was "rock solid". Has yet to make a wow play with his elite speed but has been doing a lot of underneath work & looked good

4* OT Richard Gouraige - Didn't look as good today. Didn't handle bull rushes as well & tended to give up too much ground. Apparently looked better in the scrimmage portion tho

4* OG Christian Meadows - Bounced back with a better performance due to the bad weather conditions. Built to handle power rushers better than speed

4* LB Quay Walker - Said he's been the most impressive linebacker on any team so far. Can do it all & excels at picking his way through the scrum and finding the ball carrier

4* OT Dylan Wonnum - Sounds like same issues as Gouraige. Struggled with leverage against power rushers & apparently UGA signee Brenton Cox beat him consistently with power. Looked better in team setting

4* CB Olaijah Griffin - Possibly top cover corner Monday. Praised his technique and says doesn't do anything too risky yet still is able to rack up PBU

UA All-America Game: Five teams that should be pleased (Rivals)
quote:

Auburn

Auburn signee Quindarious Monday had at least two interceptions on Day 2 and carried that momentum into the third day of workouts, which saw him be equally disruptive. The quarterback play was mediocre on a macro level but the Tigers’ Joey Gatewood continues to show the physical tools needed for greatness. Will he need to be molded in college? Sure, but his size and arm strength are both elite. That much has been abundantly clear in an all-star setting.

UA All-America Game: Tuesday's takeaways (Rivals)
quote:

3. Joey Gatewood

Gatewood had his best day of the week on Tuesday, despite windy conditions in Orlando. Physically he is gifted, with a huge frame, muscular legs and a strong arm, but he had struggled with consistency. Today he looked more relaxed and patient as he went through his progressions more naturally and smoothly. His arm strength was also showcased on a few occasions as his ball was able to cut through the wind as other quarterbacks continued to struggle. While the comparisons to Cam Newton that the Auburn signee has received for years are a bit premature, there is no questioning his potential.

4. Matthew Hill

Hill is another player who has improved as the week has progressed. He has become one of the more reliable receivers on Team Spotlight, while also taking on a new role. Along with running routes at receiver, due to the limited options on the team at running back, he has seen more plays coming out of the backfield. Hill’s versatility, speed and hands make him a dangerous weapon.

Three-Point Stance: Stock up, stock down and more from Under Armour (Rivals)
quote:

1. Sights and sounds from practice field, Day 3

Day 3 of practice was held in much better conditions than rainy Day 2, but the wind was still a factor. Here are some thoughts from Day 3.

The quarterbacks looked a bit better today despite the windy conditions, although Florida signee Emory Jones still struggled. I can’t figure out what’s wrong with Jones, but his feet are the main culprit as his footwork is inconsistent. He’s either overstriding and sailing the ball or not stepping into his throw and skipping it in the dirt. And on short passes, the Florida signee isn’t showing much touch. He got more reps today because Jacob Sirmon was injured and sat out practice, but it didn’t seem to help.

The other quarterback on his team, Dorian Thompson-Robinson, had a much better day. In fact it was the UCLA commitment’s best day yet as he looked solid for the most part throwing from the pocket and on the run. On the other side of the field, Adrian Martinez remains the most consistent quarterback, Joey Gatewood (Auburn) showed more patience today while Jack West continued to struggle.

Here are 10 guys that have raised their stock so far (these are just my opinions and don’t reflect that of the entire analyst team).

OT Nick Petit-Frere – Is he a five-star offensive tackle? Time will tell and we’ll see how he does in the game, but he has been very impressive all week.

WR Justin Shorter – Is he a five-star wide receiver? He’s built like one and sure looks like one, so we’ll see if he continues to impress.

CB Olajiah Griffin – He’s long, he’s fast, he plays the ball well and he has a chance to be in the five-star discussion.

CB Trey Dean – Dean has been the most physical cornerback at the event and hasn’t been beaten much. He is probably a little undervalued.

DB DeMarvion Overshown – I like this kid, his ball skills are off the charts and he’s showing he could be ranked a bit higher if he has a good game.

TE Brevin Jordan – He’s not that long, but he’s athletic and the perfect flex tight end who can stretch the field and he has some great hands.

DT PJ Mustipher – I came in skeptical of his ranking thinking we might have him a little high, but he’s been in the backfield constantly and has been excellent all week.

QB Adrian Martinez – He’s been more consistent than some quarterbacks ranked ahead of him and if he has a good game, he could be in for a bump. When the lights come on and it’s live action, that’s where we will see how the quarterbacks stack up.

OL Kwatrivous Johnson – The three-star has been playing like a four-star and has great size along with length and some surprising footwork.

DB Quindarious Monday – I like his ball-hawking skills and his instincts in coverage. He could be a Rivals250 prospect if he continues to ball out and has a big game.

And here are five guys I’ve been disappointed in so far (again, my opinion only and not that of the entire analyst team).

DE Jordan Davis – As a top 50 national player, I expected to see domination from the outside and he’s been bottled up for the most part except for a couple of exceptional plays. He has not dominated as I had anticipated.

DB BJ Foster – He had a great interception on Day 3, but he’s struggled in coverage otherwise and has been a step too slow compared to other defensive backs.

QB Emory Jones – The one-time five-star quarterback has really struggled all week long and doesn’t look like the same guy we scouted a year ago for whatever reason. His senior season was solid, but he hasn’t taken a step forward like some others in this class.

DE Brenton Cox – As with Davis, I expected a potential five-star performance but I haven’t seen that yet. He’s done more than Davis overall but still hasn’t reached the level I had hoped this week.

WR Alontae Taylor – We have him listed as an athlete and for good reason because he’s athletic as heck and gets open when he wants, but it’s so frustrating to see so many dropped passes.

Army Bowl: LSU is out for Rivals250 RB Harold Joiner, what's next? (Rivals)
quote:

SAN ANTONIO - For weeks it looked like Rivals250 Mountain Brook, Ala., athlete/running back Harold Joiner was headed towards an LSU commitment. From Joiner's perspective, the Tigers made it clear that he was a priority, with head coach Ed Orgeron doing an in-home visit with Joiner just prior to the start of the dead period.

If things had gone to plan, Joiner was planning on announcing his commitment to the Tigers during Saturday's Army Bowl. But over the past few weeks, things have unraveled, and now Joiner is left re-evaluating his options.

"LSU is out," Joiner said following Monday's practice. "I tried to reach out to them during the early signing period to find out what the plan was but I haven't heard back from anyone. I guess that's not going to happen anymore."

With the Tigers off the table, many have assumed Ole Miss will be the team to beat, but Joiner was non-committal about the Rebels standing in his recruitment. Instead he mentioned Auburn and UCLA as the schools most likely to get official visits between now and Signing Day.

"I'm trying to set one up with Auburn for Jan. 12," Joiner said. "I'll probably go to UCLA the following weekend."

The Tigers obviously have appeal to Joiner considering he's an Alabama native and he said he grew up admiring the school during its run to a national championship in 2010-11.

"When I was a kid I just liked whoever was winning," Joiner said. "And that's when Auburn had Cam (Newton) and all of them so that was a fun team to watch and root for."

Joiner said he's had regular talks with the Tigers coaches and is waiting to see how things go on the upcoming visit so he can see how and if he fits into Auburn's plans.

"They've always showed me a lot of energy and attention," Joiner said.

As far as UCLA, they have been in the mix for sometime and Joiner said that running backs coach DeShaun Foster is a big reason for that.

"Coach Foster has always been texting me and staying on me through everything," Joiner said. "He was a big back like me and he said that's what he likes to recruit."

Joiner said he's open to leaving the south the play in the Pac-12, but much of that will depend on how he feels after his official visit.

"I could see myself going far from home," he said. "But I have to see how I like it when I'm out there and how I could potentially fit into that program."

Joiner added he's anticipating not making a decision on a commitment until Feb. 7.
