Former Auburn defensive lineman, top-50 recruit Antwuan Jackson commits to Ohio State (SECCountry)
quote:

After a battle with Auburn coaches, Antwuan Jackson will finally end up where he wanted.

The former Auburn defensive lineman who transferred to Blinn College for the 2017 season committed to Ohio State on Tuesday.

Jackson announced his transfer from Auburn back in May, which resulted in a struggle between Jackson and the Tigers coaching staff about where he could transfer. Auburn prevented Jackson from transferring to the entire Southeastern Conference and four other programs: Clemson, Ohio State, Mercer and Georgia Southern.

After announcing his move to Blinn College, Jackson — formerly the nation’s No. 51 prospect in the 2016 class — received offers from Alabama, Ohio State, South Carolina and others. But Jackson was steadfast in his decision to choose Ohio State, which explains his attempt to persuade Auburn coaches to take the Buckeyes of the no-transfer list.

“My question was: Why are they blocking Ohio State for no reason?” Jackson told The State in June. “They just put Ohio State on there for no reason. My question to them is why are they blocking me from a Big Ten school when they don’t have anything to do with Big Ten schools?”

Now he has committed to the Buckeyes, furthering an already stellar 2018 recruiting class.

Jackson’s decision only extends Ohio State’s lead on the pack as the No. 1 recruiting class this cycle. Despite Jackson’s high profile, he ranks toward the bottom of the Buckeyes’ class, a testament to the group Urban Meyer is building in the Class of 2018. Of Ohio State’s 18 commitments, only three — Sevyn Banks, Master Teague and Marcus Hooker — are ranked below the 4-star Jackson.

Ohio State is building something special, and the Buckeyes just received a nice junior-college gift from Auburn.

Good luck to the kid but have hard time believing that Ohio State's coaching is going to be any softer than Auburn's. Hope he doesn't waste his talent. As we've seen, we are just fine without em

Auburn wide receiver target Tommy Bush considering official visit, watching Tigers closesly (SECCountry)
quote:

Tommy Bush considering Auburn official visit

To understand Tommy Bush’s recruitment, let’s first take a look back at his southeast-wide tour he took earlier this year.

In a two-week span, Bush and his parents went to a dozen different ACC and SEC schools throughout the southeast. Many of those schools were easy to overlook. With so much to see in such little time, Bush had to find certain things that stood out to him. It was information overload.

In the end, Alabama made a major impression. Georgia surprised him. Bush felt comfortable at Florida State. But those three programs are recruiting at an elite level right now, so many prospects fall in love with those places based on reaction more than true feeling.

That’s what made the fourth school he mentioned seem like an outlier.

“Auburn was really good,” Bush said. “I loved the staff and how they took their time with me. … I talk too them very often. I talk to coach (Kodi) Burns a lot. He’s been in touch with me pretty frequently. He’s in touch with my mom and dad all the time. I really like what they’re doing there. He’s talking to us at least three or four times a week.”

Dating back to his initial visit to Auburn, Bush has felt like a priority.

The Tigers have told him they’re in search of some big, tall wide receivers. Justyn Ross and Seth Williams immediately come to mind as in-state guys. But, by the sound of things, Auburn is putting in just as much effort for the Texas prospect.

“Coach Burns was saying that the tallest wide receiver they have is 6-foot-2. They’re saying that I could be the guy to take the top off the defense for them,” Bush said. “I know when I was there for Big Cat Weekend, they were talking a lot about Justyn Ross. I know he’s a big target for them. When I sat down with Coach Malzahn, he said he believes I could do big things for them because they don’t have anyone with my size and speed there.”

So now the question comes: Will Auburn receive another visit?

Bush told SEC Country a few weeks ago that it’s “definitely being discussed.” But he’s likely only to take official visits going forward. With a top 15, he has to narrow it down to the five programs who will definitely received official visits.

Nebraska is the only guarantee to get one when he takes that visit on Oct. 6. Alabama has a strong chance, as well, but Bush is still trying to work all the specifics out on the rest.

Bush’s first reaction about whether Auburn would get one is promising for the Tigers.

“Absolutely,” he said.

Then Bush amended his comment on that, which makes the next few weeks for Auburn so important as it tries to work out kinks in its passing game.

“I’m thinking about them really, really hard,” Bush said. “I know Coach (Gus) Malzahn is doing good things down there. I’m still looking at their season, though. I’m looking to see what they do, so I can figure out where I want to go on these visits.”

FWIW sounds like Bama has focused their attention to this kid with Ross trending Clemson. I think that helps us lock in Seth Williams

What Tommy Bush is watching

The Bush family has a bit of a weekend routine.

On Friday night, Bush’s father sets the DVR for all of the teams he’s interested in. Bush often is on the road somewhere while the games are going on, so they aren’t able to watch many of the games live. On Sunday, even though they love watching their NFL, they’ll flip through the offensive possessions of as many of Bush’s top 15 as possible.

“We look to see if they’re spreading the ball around or if they’re just throwing it to one guy,” Bush said.

So far, Bush has a few offense that stand out: Oklahoma, Texas and Ole Miss.

But there is plenty of time for other programs to emerge offensively. Bush is staying patient as he assesses many of these other teams. He understands passing games aren’t going to develop overnight and that judging based on a small sample size can return inaccurate results.

Bush is very calculated in his approach, however.

“I’m looking for the kinds of routes these receivers are running. I’m looking at how they’re moving their receivers around,” Bush said. “There are just things I’ve learned in high school that I’m now watching out for now. I’m looking at the pace of these offenses to see if they are keeping their receivers fresh by keeping them on the same side of the field or are they moving them around and putting them in the slot sometimes to get mismatches.”

Bush had a close eye on the Auburn-Clemson game.

Luckily for the Tigers, it doesn’t appear the 4-star wide receiver is as quick to question the woes as many people in the fan base. He pointed out some of the struggles Auburn had offensively, but Bush also admitted he’s going to give Auburn plenty of time to figure out some of those troubles.

“Jarrett Stidham held on to the ball too long. He was trying to make plays, but he just couldn’t because of Clemson’s defense,” Bush said. “I’m going to give them time to get it clicking.”

Auburn has time to pull it together. Bush is likely to be a January decision, maybe as far away as National Signing Day. He, obviously, won’t be an early enrollee.

Well at least he's giving us benefit of doubt right now....

2018 class projection: Auburn could make major splash in Georgia on offensive line (SECCountry)
quote:

Auburn has a track record of top-10 recruiting classes under Gus Malzahn, but the Tigers still have some work to do.

They currently sit at No. 24 in the 247Sports team rankings, because Auburn only has 13 commitments right now. Seven of those are on the offensive side of the ball, so there are plenty of additions likely to be made in the coming months as far as defense goes.

With six commitments on defense, that side of the ball has plenty of room to grow in the 2018 class, too.

But let’s start with the offense. Joey Gatewood, Asa Martin, Shaun Shivers, Jalil Irvin, Kameron Stutts, Matthew Hill and Shedrick Jackson are already committed, but the projection below has four other prospects joining Auburn’s 2018 offensive group.

Let’s take a look:

Quarterback (1): 4-star Joey Gatewood (Jacksonville, Fla.)

There’s not much to report here. Gatewood has stated consistently how he’s committed fully to Auburn regardless if anyone else commits to the Tigers.

With that said, I think Auburn is on the outside looking in for Justin Fields, as well as any potential flip attempts on Ohio State commit Emory Jones.

So will the Tigers find and evaluate another quarterback option?

It’s possible, but I’m leaning toward no at this time. Auburn’s staff wants an elite type of guy if they’re going to add someone to co-exist with Gatewood in the class. Otherwise, the 4-star quarterback who has been committed to Auburn longer than anyone else has more than enough talent to do it on his own.

He’s had an impressive start to the 2017 season, and it’ll only improve from here.

Running back (2): 4-star Asa Martin (Decatur, Ala.), 3-star Shaun Shivers (Hollywood, Fla.)

Last month, I felt Auburn would’ve been OK riding with Shivers and Shivers only in the 2018 running back class. Luckily for the Tigers, they received a much better result.

Asa Martin chose Auburn over Alabama, Clemson and Florida. All three of those schools, especially the first on the list, will continue to recruit Martin until he signs in December. But, for now, there’s no reason to think his final destination will be anywhere other than Auburn.

The Tigers could add a third running back in the class if they feel like it’s necessary. For now, I think Auburn will stick with two, continuing to recruit other top targets and evaluate others as a defense mechanism if Martin has an unexpected change of heart.

Wide receiver (3): 4-star Seth Williams (Tuscaloosa, Ala.), 4-star Matthew Hill (Snellville, Ga.), 3-star Shedrick Jackson (Hoover, Ala.)

This position group probably suffered the biggest loss from August to September, but there is still time for a resolution.

Justyn Ross was removed from the list. I wrote on Monday, after attending Ross’ game on Friday, about his rising interest in out-of-state Clemson rather than Auburn or Alabama, which is a rare trait for the state’s No. 1 overall prospect.

Auburn is probably in his No. 2 spot based on proximity to home and relationship with the staff. But the Tigers are going to have to show much more on the field to prove to Ross he’d be utilized more there than in Clemson’s explosive passing game. Alabama finds itself in a similar situation to Auburn.

I still think the Tigers are the favorite to land Seth Williams. Ross and Williams are really the two big-bodied, in-state receiver options in Alabama. Auburn would love to add both, but it’s imperative it grabs one. If the Tigers miss on Ross, the chase for Williams will pick up even further.

Auburn could receive an official visit from Tommy Bush, but as of now, he needs to see more from the offense to place him in any kind of projection.

Tight end (1): 3-star Michael Parker (Huntsville, Ala.)

This position could still go several different ways. I broke this down a little more a couple weeks ago and think, for the time being, there are really four names to track at the position. If that list grows, I’ll make sure to update things.

Luke Ford seems like the least likely right now. Auburn’s best chance is to surprise with a commitment from 5-star quarterback Justin Fields. Nic McTear is a former Oklahoma State commit who hears from Auburn tight ends coach Larry Porter on a regular basis. Tyneil Hopper has multiple connections to the Tigers and was the first tight end on campus when Porter took over his role. He has solid interest in North Carolina and Louisville, as well.

McTear and Hopper might have the same level of chance to land at Auburn as Parker. For now, I’m going with the in-state prospect. The thing to watch here is Alabama’s interest level. If the Crimson Tide stay out of things, then I think Auburn is the likely landing spot.

Hey-oh!

This is perhaps a premature projection to make. Wonnum, Irvin and Stutts stay the same. But the addition of 4-star offensive guard Trey Hill will likely catch the attention of many.

He’s one of the best offensive line prospects in the country and is a top priority for multiple schools, including but not limited to Georgia, Auburn, Florida State and Clemson. Hill has been labeled a strong Georgia lean for almost the entirety of his recruiting process, but those words have never come from Hill’s mouth.

Perhaps the most interesting: Hill made his first college visit of the season to Auburn when he had the opportunity to go to Georgia-Appalachian State or Alabama-Florida State. That doesn’t necessarily mean Auburn’s the school of choice, but it certainly means the Tigers are much more in this than has been suggested by many in the industry, myself included at times.

Hill is the offensive line priority for Auburn’s class, though Wonnum is too as the Tigers battle with South Carolina. Auburn might provide the most immediate access to the field, which could be the deciding factor.

Auburn recruiting mailbag: Will the Clemson loss hurt recruiting on offense? (SECCountry)
quote:

The questions turned slightly more somber this week, as was expected after a Week 2 loss at Clemson.

On the bright side, the Auburn Tigers only lost to the defending national champon Clemson Tigers by 8 points in a night game on the road. It was ugly, but it’s reparable. The Clemson game might’ve had adverse effects on your sleeping patterns, but in the recruiting world at least, it did little to damage the relationships and momentum Auburn has a chance to build in the rest of the class.

Thanks to those of you who sent in questions this week. If you’d like your questions to be published next week, tweet @benjaminwolk or direct message me.

Let’s go.

@sherrod4au: How did the lack of offensive performance Saturday affect the big-time recruits? I’m sure we are way off Fields radar now.

That last sentence describes the collective recruiting reaction I’ve seen in my Twitter DMs since Auburn’s loss on Saturday. It’s a natural fan instinct, I’m sure, but I wouldn’t fret just yet.

As for Fields specifically, sure, he might not land with the Tigers. I think they were playing from behind regardless of on-field results. But I also don’t think recruits look at game-to-game results as much as fans do. Big-picture things? Absolutely. Recruits want to win championships and compete against the best teams in the country.

But recruits are often looking for how their specific position group was used. Offensive linemen might see Saturday’s result as an opportunity to see the field quickly. Running backs might recognize the possibility of injury and how the Tigers seemed to need a second-half playmaker at the position.

Wide receivers might look and question their value some. Is the offense designed to make me succeed? But it’s also a first-year quarterback and first-year offensive coordinator. That’s not what a lot of fans want to hear right now, but it is the truth. And a lot of recruits see it that way.

Take Tommy Bush, for instance. He pointed out Auburn’s struggles in the game against Clemson. But he also offered the Tigers the benefit of the doubt. For now at least, don’t sweat the recruiting angles. There is plenty of time to work that out.

@Ellitor_AU: Not counting Zakoby McClain for the moment, who’s next on Auburn’s linebacker shopping list after Quay Walker, JJ Peterson and Channing Tindall?

This probably isn’t the answer you’re looking for, but I’ll give it anyway: You hit the high points.

McClain, as has been documented, needs a little more time to make a decision. His inconsistency with following up on visits might have programs like LSU and Auburn looking in other directions for the meantime. But don’t rule out McClain landing at either place down the road.

Walker is a flip candidate with Florida State and Georgia is firmly in the mix, as well. JJ Peterson (Alabama) and Channing Tindall (South Carolina) are thought to be leans in other directions, so it makes sense that your question is kind of: What happens if Auburn happens to miss on all these guys?

I’m not sure they’d be forced to do anything. Auburn is building a deep, elite linebacker group. Just take a look at the linebackers the Tigers have brought in the last four years (ranked by position).

No. 2 Tre’ Williams
No. 3 Tadarian Moultry
No. 8 Jeff Holland
No. 10 Montavious Atkinson
No. 12 Darrell Williams
No. 13 Richard McBryde
No. 15 KJ Britt
No. 21 Deshaun Davis
No. 21 Chandler Wooten
No. 27 Tre Threat
No. 138 Robert Muschamp

That’s all of them. Every linebacker the Tigers have taken since the Class of 2014. Obviously, including Muschamp as the outlier, every Auburn linebacker commit has been ranked No. 27 or better at their position in their given recruiting class. In the 2018 class, Michael Harris is ranked No. 11 at his position, so he fits in the middle of this trend.

Because of Harris’ presence, Auburn is likely to look more at outside linebacker than inside linebacker in the rest of this class.

Here are the relevant options in the top 30.

No. 1 JJ Peterson
No. 2 Adam Anderson
No. 5 Channing Tindall
No. 7 Otis Reese
No. 11 Quay Walker
No. 16 Zakoby McClain
No. 2o David Reese
No. 29 Quin Williams

Obviously you already had Peterson, Tindall, Walker and McClain checked off the list. So the other four on the list — Anderson, Otis Reese, David Reese and Williams — are the ones to watch closely, assuming we’re sticking by the Tigers’ trend to bring in exclusively elite linebacker talent, as projected by 247Sports composite rankings.

The Reeses’ are long shots. Otis is committed to Michigan. He visited an Auburn practice this spring, so there is mutual interest there, but the same can be said for Georgia and likely a few other programs. David is committed to Florida and hasn’t shown signs of interest in Auburn. With that said, David’s relationship with Richard Jibunor is a big reason why he visited Gainesville. Maybe Auburn could work to get David to so the same.

That leaves Anderson and Williams.

Anderson is a lot like Peterson, Tindall and Walker in that he might be leaning elsewhere, for now, but Auburn is in the mix of the top two or three schools in consideration. He made his last visit of the summer contact period, and it’ll be interesting to see when he makes it back for a game. This decision could be drawn out, so Auburn will remain in the mix until Anderson commits.

Williams has been in communication with Auburn throughout the recruiting class, but not as much lately. He’s a name to track just in case.

I’ll keep it simple: You’ve got to throw to them.

There isn’t much more to it than that. Salvatore Cannella is just a tight end. Jalen Harris is used in blocking scheme and rarely targeted in the passing game.

Gus Malzahn said tight ends were the priority route a few times against Clemson, but the routes didn’t materialize. It’ll need to start clicking if the Tigers are going to have a chance with Luke Ford, Tyneil Hopper, Michael Parker and Nic McTear.

Devan Barrett has the potential to be that guy once he packs on a little more weight. Asa Martin has shown early in the 2017 season that he’s one of the most prolific high school running backs in the nation. Those are really the two guys to look at right now.

It’s possible Auburn lands an official visit from No. 3 running back James Cook, which could be a game- changer. Aside from that, don’t expect Auburn to make many moves at running back in the 2018 class, aside from staying in touch with a guy like Dameon Pierce.

Otherwise, here’s a list of the top 2019 running backs Auburn has offered so far.

No. 3 Trey Sanders (Alabama commit)
No. 4 Devyn Ford
No. 7 Jerrion Ealy
No. 9 John Emery Jr.
No. 16 Daniel Carter

FWIW I love John Emery. Him and Tyler Goodson are my top 2 wants for 2019 RB class

Auburn QB recruits Joey Gatewood, Justin Fields impress Trent Dilfer (SECCountry)
quote:

Trent Dilfer analyzes Joey Gatewood

If you weren’t tuned into NFL Network on Tuesday at 10:30 ET, it’s OK, you have time to watch more.

The NFL Network is airing a multi-part docuseries tracking the journey of Elite 11 quarterbacks and their learning experience from Super Bowl champion Trent Dilfer and others. Dilfer has been a part of the Elite 11 competition since its inception, which has given him the opportunity to be up close and personal with some of the best quarterbacks of past recruiting classes, including Sean White and Jarrett Stidham.

This time, Dilfer had a chance to work with a few potential future Auburn quarterbacks.

Dilfer came into the competition with many of the same doubts about Joey Gatewood as everyone else. He split time at the high school level, which raised concerns. He looks so much bigger than everyone on the field that it made Gatewood a tough prospect to scout beforehand.

But when Dilfer trained with Gatewood in the top-24 part of the Elite 11 competition, he left with a different interpretation.

“Impressed,” Dilfer said Wednesday on SEC Country’s The Auburn Podcast. “He’s such a talented kid.”

As is the case with all quarterbacks, Dilfer says there are improvements Gatewood needs to make.

Dilfer said Gatewood has to become a passer more than a runner. During the competition, Gatewood showed a consistent desire to to so, which Dilfer expects to make Gatewood a dangerous threat at the next level.

“At first I was skeptical because I saw the same film everybody else did. He’s still a runner who can throw. He’s not yet a passer than runs. That’s a transition he’ll have to make. But he has everything you’d want to try and develop him that way,” Dilfer said. “He actually has a very clean stroke, can really throw the football and hasn’t been asked to really grow as a quarterback. We challenged him to grow that way, and he did. He’s a competitive kid. He wants to learn. He doesn’t want to be put in that category of what we call butchers — guys who throw their machete around and chop meat. He wants to be a surgeon. … But he knows there’s a transition to that and really wants to learn. I really was impressed with Joey.”

Dilfer’s biggest takeaway, ultimately, matched up with that of most everyone else who sees Gatewood in person.

“But from a physical giftedness standpoint, off the charts,” Dilfer said.

The star of the show: Justin Fields

Spoiler alert for the docuseries: Justin Fields wins MVP.

He was the star out in Oregon this summer when he put on a show at the Elite 11 camp. It’s a reason Fields made the leap to No. 1 overall prospect by several prognostications. It’s also an influence on why he became a top target for several programs across the country, including Auburn.

“Well he shouldn’t just be a target of Auburn football,” Dilfer said. “He should be a target of NFL franchises.”

Coupled with Clemson commit Trevor Lawrence, Fields stood out from previous Elite 11 classes.

Dilfer told a story on the SEC Country podcast that is revealing. Three weeks before the competition, Dilfer likes to send a full NFL playbook to the participants. Most of them bring up issues they have with studying it in full — spring sports, finals, etc. — but Lawrence and Fields didn’t make a sound.

Until they arrived in Los Angeles and showed they knew the whole thing.

“They’re as talented of kids as we’ve ever had. What really separated them was their ability to do everything else — their leadership quality, their coach-ability, their ability to change and adapt in a matter of days, their preparation,” Dilfer said. “They still have a full life, yet I send them this NFL playbook and tell them, ‘You better know this by the time you get to LA.’ They text me, ‘Are you kidding? There’s no possible way.’ I didn’t hear from Trevor. I didn’t hear from Justin. They come to LA, and they know it like the back of their hand. They found the ability to learn.”

That’s what separates the good ones from the great ones, Dilfer said.

“Their ability to say, ‘This is important to me. If I’m going to be a great player on Saturdays if I’m going to be a pro on Sundays, people are going to be asking a lot of me. I’ve got to be a pro and do it,'” Dilfer said. “These guys answered the bell every single time I challenged them. Could not be more impressed with those two.”

Defensive projection: Auburn secures athletic, star-studded defensive line (SECCountry)
quote:

Aside from safety, Auburn still has a lot of work to do in the 2018 recruiting cycle.

There are only two non-safeties committed on the defensive side of the ball — linebacker Michael Harris and defensive lineman Daquan Newkirk. But there are a lot of pieces left to add.

Rodney Garner is a known closer on the recruiting trail, so expect him to add several pieces. Travis Williams has several other elite talents out there that he’s actively recruiting. Greg Brown is in search of his first cornerback since taking over as Auburn’s defensive backs coach.

Here’s the latest projection on how I anticipate things will play out on defense in Auburn’s Class of 2018:

The numbers didn’t change, but one name did.

Coynis Miller has been in this projection for a while. Despite his stance that Florida was his No. 1 choice, I still think it’s going to be tough for Miller to pass on Auburn and Rodney Garner. Nothing has changed there.

Richard Jibunor has been on commit watch for a while. He still is. Jibunor will take a visit to Gainesville, Fla., this weekend for the Florida-Tennessee game, but I anticipate he’ll come back ready to finalize his decision with the Tigers.

Andres Fox has been somewhat a mystery of late. Even though people on the LSU side feel confident, there is still a chance for Fox to land at Alabama, Auburn or Stanford, as well. Fox said early in the process that he felt likely to commit to Auburn, and usually when these tough decisions have to be made, prospects often revert back to their original wishes.

Daquan Newkirk is committed already, and that hasn’t changed.

The new name on the list is Kayode Oladele. I probably jumped the gun last month on Caleb Johnson. Auburn is still evaluating him. Oladele, on the other hand, camped with Auburn this summer and received an offer. He’s from Nigeria, and as a result, has a close friendship with Jibunor, which should help the Tigers.
