I haven't watched any of Gatewoods film. Does he have another position? Is a good enough athlete to play WR or S? If he can play defense he even has a frame to put on 30 pounds and be a LB

WTF is this? Fields has been on campus for like two hours and he hasn't even committed yet? Come on Gus!

I was told that Chip wants to recruit QB's and not "athletes" who play QB.

What happens with Gatewood if we land Fields?

quote:1. Yes. A TE or HB is the trending thought now if he does not develop as a QB.

KN doesn't have much info on Fields visit. Fields said it was great and that he's trying to stop by all the schools recruiting him the hardest before the dead period. He will be visiting FSU this week as well and was at UGA Monday. KN says unsure who was with him on visit but that Fields does already know Chip Lindsey well
FWIW there is a growing feeling of confidence coming out of FSU camp, which is funny because there is also growing confidence by UGA and UF already feels good. It seems like all four teams think they are in a good spot. Will be interesting to see when/if a consensus is formed

Auburn plans to add '1 true running back' as part of 2018 recruiting class (AL.com)
quote:
The strength of Auburn's offense during the Gus Malzahn era has been the rushing attack, with the Tigers averaging an SEC-best 262.8 yards per game on the ground during that span. That strength will be no different this season with an established backfield combination of Kamryn Pettway and Kerryon Johnson.
While those two will command the bulk of the workload this fall -- and more than likely keep the program's streak of 1,000-yard rushers alive and well -- they could both feasibly be gone after the 2017 season, with Pettway's departure more likely than Johnson's. So, with the possibility of Auburn losing its top two running backs after this year, what does the future look like at the position for the Tigers?
Behind Pettway and Johnson, the team has considerable depth in the form of sophomores Malik Miller, who showed some promise before a knee injury sidelined him in 2016, and Kam Martin, whose speed proved valuable in a limited role last season, as well as incoming freshman Devan Barrett, a four-star home-run threat. As Malzahn noted this spring, however, "you cannot have enough" depth at the position in the SEC, and the Tigers will look to bolster that depth with their 2018 recruiting class.
"We're going to probably sign one, maybe two that you would call athlete... but then I think we'll take one true running back," Auburn running backs coach Tim Horton said in April.
As it stands, Auburn has one of those such players already committed to its 2018 class: three-star all-purpose back Shaun Shivers. At 5-foot-7 and 169 pounds, Shivers is unlikely to be an every-down back at Auburn, but could fit more in that "athlete" role that Horton described.
After visiting campus in early February, Shivers said Auburn likes him in that versatile role on offense, where he could see some touches out of the backfield but also move to the slot at receiver and try to get the ball in open space.
"(The athletes) may not fit in the running back category," Horton said. "That might get you an extra number that they can play running back, they can play receiver, they can play DB. They may want to hear running back right now, but give them a shot at running back; if they're not good enough, they're probably going to be good enough to play wide out or DB."
Still, that leaves one or two spots for Horton to fill this cycle, with Auburn needing to add one true running back.
Auburn just missed out on three-star running back Master Teague III, who committed to Ohio State on Sunday, but the Tigers remain in the mix for several top targets at the position.
Chief among them are four-star in-state running back Asa Martin and four-star Bainbridge, Ga., running back Dameon Pierce, a former Alabama commit who visited Auburn last weekend. Martin is a 6-foot, 195-pounder who is ranked as the No. 7 running back in the country, while Pierce is a 5-foot-11, 205-pounder rated as the nation's No. 9 overall running back.
The Tigers are also pursuing three-star prospect Tae Provens out of Madison County. The 5-foot-11, 187-pounder could play running back or fit into that athlete category, and he is scheduled to announce a commitment on Aug. 11 between Auburn, Tennessee, LSU, South Carolina and Louisville. Another possibility is four-star Mountain Brook running back Harold Joiner, though LSU is the favorite for the four-star prospect.

Auburn hosting 5-star quarterback, nation's No. 3 prospect (AL.com)
quote:
Kennesaw, Ga., five-star quarterback Justin Fields decommitted from Penn State last week, and Auburn is one of the schools with a chance to land the elite prospect.
The 6-foot-3, 221-pound Fields, now the nation's No. 3 overall recruit per the 247Sports composite, arrived in Auburn for a midweek visit on Tuesday, a source confirmed to AL.com. 247Sports first reported the news.
Fields is also the nation's top dual-threat quarterback. Florida, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Alabama and many others have offered and it's unclear where Fields is leaning, if anywhere. Auburn wants to sign two quarterbacks and has one committed in four-star Joey Gatewood from Jacksonville, Fla.
Fields will compete at Nike's The Opening Finals later this month and AL.com will be at the event.
Fields threw for 2,770 yards and 23 touchdowns with just six interceptions and rushed for 1,176 yards and 15 touchdowns for Harrison High School.

5-star QB Justin Fields makes midweek visit to Auburn (SECCountry)
quote:
Auburn’s standing in the Justin Fields sweepstakes is rising.
The 5-star quarterback from Harrison (Ga.) arrived for an unofficial visit to Auburn on Tuesday, a source confirmed. He’ll leave later in the evening. Fields de-committed from Penn State last week to reopen his recruitment to schools including Florida, Georgia, Auburn and Florida State. He visited Georgia on Monday and made it to Auburn on Tuesday.
He will be in Bradenton, Fla., this weekend for a national 7-on-7 competition. That trip likely will coincide with a stop at Florida State and potentially Florida.

Auburn decided it needed to take two quarterbacks in the 2018 class on April 29, shortly after Tyler Queen announced his intent to transfer. Woody Barrett’s news hit soon after to amplify the necessity. On April 29, the Tigers finally offered Fields who — already committed to Penn State for months — had become a top priority for schools with zero committed quarterbacks like Florida State, Florida and Georgia.
Fields attended Auburn last fall for a game, but he hasn’t taken any publicly-reported visits since.
The biggest factor working in Auburn’s favor: fit and relationships. He seems like the perfect option for what Auburn is known to do offensively. People liken him to Cam Newton, who happens to be his mentor. That mentorship gives him considerable insight into what Gus Malzahn is like as a coach, which is something that will be a major plus for the Tigers.
He’s the No. 1 dual-threat quarterback in the nation and No. 3-ranked overall prospect nationally.
As mentioned last week when he de-committed, a few targets who are considering Auburn and Florida have said they’ve spoken with Fields about potentially playing college ball together. This is a recruitment that likely won’t linger for long. Fields has already begun his recruitment tour to visit these programs and, as a source told me, he’d rather have the decision finalized so he can enjoy his senior season.
It is still unknown how the recruitment of Fields will affect Joey Gatewood’s commitment, but Gatewood hasn’t given any reason publicly to doubt whether he embraces competition.

PHYSICAL PROWESS: DE KAYODE OLADELE
This goes to the player who looks the best getting off the bus (or in this case coming through registration), and no one looked better on the hoof than Kayode Oladele. He may be raw on the field but the former Florida State commit looks like the perfect hybrid linebacker/pass rusher.
Honorable Mention: Ani Izuchukwu looks the part with almost zero body fat but, like Oladele, he is raw and more of a hybrid player. Wide receivers Kevin Austin and Terrace Marshall look great at that position and Isaac Taylor-Stuart looks huge at cornerback. Offensive lineman Clay Webb looks the part of a future star.
Webb is a top target for us in 2019 class

quote:
MIGHTY MOUSE: DB MAX WILLIAMS
This goes to the smallest player who made the biggest impact and that was defensive back Max Williams. He closes on the ball very well and plays bigger than expected. A wide receiver usually wins this award, but not this year.
Honorable Mention: Shaun Shivers was the smallest player out here and was fun to watch but was clearly underutilized by his team. Wide receiver Elijah Moore isn’t the biggest guy but he’s fast and he started off strong. Jaelen Gill isn’t huge but won the Running Back MVP Award over some serious talent.

ANGER MANAGEMENT: OL KARDELL THOMAS
The winner of this award is the prospect who plays with the most passion and anger and that was 2019 offensive lineman Kardell Thomas who had a few dust ups during and after reps. At one point it looked like he and defensive tackle Rick Sandidge were going to go at it but both exchanged a friendly hug after a rep that went well past the whistle.
Honorable Mention: Clay Webb was aggressive on offense although he missed the evening portion with a shoulder injury. Sandidge was also very physical and aggressive and Trey Hill also threw his weight around. Justin Dedich isn’t the biggest lineman but he was really aggressive and didn’t back down from bigger guys. Jowon Briggs is aggressive for a younger player and Darnell Wright was also a big-time aggressor for a 2019 prospect.

BEAR MARKET: OL NANA ASIEDU
This award goes to the prospect that hurt his ranking the most and the tough choice here is offensive tackle Nana Asiedu who was beaten regularly and looked like he didn’t really want to compete that hard in the afternoon, likely out of frustration. He wasn’t dominated by any stretch but he just seemed a step slow all day.
Honorable Mention: Quarterback Matt Corral didn’t look like a top 10 player nationally. Five-star K.J. Henry could slide as well, although it’s doubtful he will lose his fifth star. Derrik Allen struggled a bit, and linebacker Zakoby McClain's ranking might be a bit high. Wide receiver Xavier Williams and linebacker Solomon Tuliaupupu were inconsistent.

quote:
BULL MARKET: OL DELONE SCAFIE
This goes to the player who raised his stock the most and no one improved their standing more than Offensive Line MVP Delone Scafie. He isn’t the tallest tackle and could be forced to play guard in college, but his arm extension is excellent and his footwork was flawless.
Honorable Mention: D’Shawn Jamison is a guy I felt pushed the needle a bit on his ranking as did defensive back Isaac Taylor-Stuart, linebacker David Reese, wide receiver Kevin Austin and defensive end Tyreke Smith. Late addition Javeyon Morton held his own as a mid-level three star. Defensive back Chris Smith handled himself well as did Linebacker MVP Richard Jibunor.

SPIN IT: QB TREVOR LAWRENCE
This goes to the quarterback who throws the prettiest ball and "spins it" better than anyone else. There’s a reason Trevor Lawrence is the No. 1 player in the 2018 Rivals100. Every pass comes off his hand smoothly and there are no wobblers. There were some talented quarterbacks at the event but Lawrence threw the best ball.
Honorable Mention: You wouldn’t know Harrison Bailey is a 2020 prospect based on the way he throws the ball. Justin Rogers spins it very well as does Devin Leary.

quote:
THE WINDUP AND THE PITCH: QB GRANT GUNELL
This award, if you can call it that, goes to the quarterback with the most deliberate delivery -- not a good thing. Texas A&M commitment Grant Gunnell needs to tighten his release quite a bit and make quicker decisions as he was just a second too late on many passes.
Honorable Mention: Jalen Mayden has a lot of upside but also needs to get the ball out quicker. Justin Fields has a nice release but needs to make it a little more compact as well.

POISE UNDER PRESSURE: QB JUSTIN FIELDS
The quarterback that doesn't get rattled gets this award and that was Justin Fields this weekend. Not only did he win the Quarterback Challenge under some duress in front of everyone but when it came down to one play to win the 7-on-7, he made the perfect pass to St. Brown to win it all for his team.
Honorable Mention: Lawrence was very impressive, especially after his team lost their first two games. Jalen Mayden threw two touchdown passes in the title game. Grant Gunnell was key to his team’s race to the title game despite a bad interception near the end.

STICK UM: WR AMON-RA ST. BROWN
This award goes to the player with the best hands and there were many who made great catches but Amon-Ra St. Brown made some amazing catches. In addition to his tournament-winning catch in traffic, he also made a great adjustment to a ball thrown slightly off the mark by Fields in the end zone for a score and he laid out nicely for a long Mayden bomb. I didn’t see him drop much of anything.
Honorable Mention: There were a lot of drops early but the receivers got their hands straight in the evening. Ja’Marr Chase made the catch of the morning when he got his feet tangled with Josh Proctor but still caught the ball while on his back. Class of 2019 wide receiver Jadon Haselwood made numerous nice catches as did fellow 2019 Theo Wease. Kearis Jackson had a very steady day catching the ball. Big tight end John Fitzpatrick was reliable. Kevin Austin made a ton of nice catches, as did five-star Terrace Marshall. Jaiden Woodbey made plays on the ball on both offense and defense.
St. Brown is apparently a beast. I have seen a few different sites praise him. You probably have to with a first name of Amon-Ra

THE SNUGGIE: DB D'SHAWN JAMISON
We could call this award "the blanket," but it doesn't sound as cool. This is for the defensive back who provided the best overall coverage at the event and was all over wide outs. I’ll go with D’Shawn Jamison in a close one here as he not only excelled in the one-on-ones but he was all over the field in the 7-on-7 play.
Honorable Mention: Al Blades had a good day and was the only guy to really give St. Brown trouble. Class of 2019 Max Williams showed flashes as did fellow 2019 Derek Stingley. Woodbey had a nice day as well. Devonta Lee was the surprise of the day, filling in at defensive back due to injury and coming away with three interceptions. De’Gabriel Floyd, Richard Jibunor, David Reese and others were solid at linebacker and the aforementioned Green and Cook were also good.
