imo the absolute worst thing that could happen is another 8-4 season. Would probably mean Malzahn keeps his job but then there's not really much he can sell. Either win big and get the hype going again or crash and burn so new coach can sell future like Smart/Orgeron. I am optimistic tho that Iron Bowl will decide SEC West & SEC this year

Like E said, I think Gus is gone with another 9-3. Too much talent on this roster. Hand-picked his QB. We have to be in the playoff discussion going into the Iron Bowl for him to stay alive, IMO.

Sorry, but there is no way in hell Gus gets fired with a 9-3 record. 8-4 maybe, not 9-3.

I don't know about that. I think it would depend on who he lost to & how he lost. If injury apocalypse were to happen late then even losing to both UGA/BAMA I could see him sticking around. If he goes 9-3 but beats UGA & BAMA then I highly doubt he gets fired.

7-5 he's definitely gone. I think 8-4 it would again be context. Do you fire him if Jarrett Stidham/Sean White both go down injured and we lose to UGA/BAMA with Willis starting? idk that's a tough call but I don't think you can make blanked 8-4/9-3 = fired statements

With all that said hopefully we win 10+ & it doesn't matter

Rivals 5* Challenge superlatives on AU targets/commit

quote:

POISE UNDER PRESSURE: QB JUSTIN FIELDS

The quarterback that doesn't get rattled gets this award and that was Justin Fields this weekend. Not only did he win the Quarterback Challenge under some duress in front of everyone but when it came down to one play to win the 7-on-7, he made the perfect pass to St. Brown to win it all for his team.

WHAT POSITION: DB JAMIEN SHERWOOD

This award goes to the player you look at during warmups and simply assume plays a position other than his own. There were many big defensive backs at the event but Jamien Sherwood looks like he could easily grow into a linebacker. That’s a big kid trying to cover not only outside receivers but guys in the slot.

MOST DISAPPOINTING:

Honorable Mention: Shaun Shivers wasn’t quite as sudden and fast as I expected and I was surprised he didn’t run away with the Fastest On The Field award.

Gotcha. I agree. Although I would say it wouldnt absolutely happen, just that it would be likely to happen. Like if all of our QBs went down for the season after week one or some crazy scenario like that.

Our schedule looks pretty favorable, even for Sean White I'd expect the floor to be 8-4.

While I imagine he stays at 9-3, if those 3 Ls are LSU/UGA/Bama I think he probably should be out the door

I've argued that 9-3 should be enough for this reason.......

We won't be able to attract a top tier coach to Auburn if we fired him at 9-3. In 5 years he's beaten Bama, won an SEC title, played in NC game, went to a Sugar Bowl and would've just gone 9-3 (meaning he beat one of clemson/lsu/uga/bama) with a potential for 10 wins with a bowl victory.

You can't explain that away to potential top tier coaches without having MEGA guarantees in their contracts. That's how you end up with guys like Orgeron as your HC at a place like LSU.

if we lose both games to Bama & UGA for a 4th straight season. That would be a first in AU football history.

Damn, as much as I know about AU football history, I didn't realize this until you posted. Went back and verified, in fact the only time we have ever lost to both teams in three consecutive seasons were 1951-53 (the 2nd worst three-year stretch in AU post-WWII history) and 1966-68 (the pre-Sully years). Heck, even during the WORST three-year post-War stretch from '75-77 (Shug's disastrous final season and Barfield's first two) we managed to knock off UGa once, between the hedges in Athens no less.

Learn something new every day...

Describe your "top tier coach" because generally speaking I disagree.

I don't know how I feel about that either. On one hand, losing 4 straight years to your top rival is ridiculous. On the other firing a coach after a 9-3 season (and for the fun of it let's say he wins the bowl game giving him 10 wins) just seems crazy at the same time. I really don't know where I would stand on the issue. It would probably come down to how we lost those games. If we were at full power and got beat in all 3 I probably would be off the bus but if injuries struck hard late down the stretch maybe I would be more forgiving?

Just don't know. Really hope we don't have to find out

No high quality proven HC would take the AU job following firing Gus after a 9-3 season unless they roped JJ into the worst contract in coaching history from the administration's standpoint.

Rightly or wrongly, firing Gus after a 9-3 season would tell the coaching fraternity that there is no job security at AU.

Well we are already very, very thin in the safety spot.

Catching up on some AL.com articles. Some of these are 5 or so days old but I am procrastinating work so why not ?

Who could commit to Auburn next? (AL.com)

Auburn is currently tied atop Fox's list of contenders, but he isn't revealing the other school. Alabama and LSU round out his top three. Look for Fox's decision sometime in August.

Visiting again this week but KN thinks it's doubtful he commits. Still good news for AU tho the last instate kid that took a midweek visit ended up becoming a Bama lock...
