Plans to match the nickname

Big Cat knows all about the SEC and national titles Auburn has won over the years. He believes the Tigers are winners. He hopes only to add to the tradition and history.

Coming directly from a program which Felton turned around in a few years, Big Cat hopes to help Auburn have more “glory days.” The newcomer is aware he won’t be able to do that if he doesn’t perform.

But he feels he’s ready. He knows even if he’s not, he has to be — and soon.

“If I’m not, coach isn’t going to put me out there,” Big Cat said. “But I have to play. So now I put myself in the best position to be a better young man, a better athlete on the field and in the classroom. Everyday I wake up and try to do all the small things better. You do the small things better and the big things won’t be a problem.”

So for now, Big Cat is putting daydreams of sacks, awards and College Football Playoff trophies on hold. Visions of being an NFL draft pick and running through a tunnel as a pro, well, hopefully those will occur more frequently in a few years.

For him, the important thing is waking up being where he’s supposed to be on time each day. He’ll live in the weight room and go from there.

“When I first get there I’m thinking about developing,” Big Cat said. “I’m all about what I need to do to beat the guy in front of me.”

Enjoying the moment is at the top of his to-do list, and his family’s, as well.

“Who knew?” Marcia Bryant asked. “My background, my dad was like a sharecropper. It’s something you hardly ever hear these days. We helped him with the cows, hogs. You name it, when I was a little girl we had outhouses. It’s a big, major change for the family. For him to be this big, it’s amazing.”

Big Cat could hardly believe it would soon be time to depart his small town of Cordele (pop. 11,147) and drive down back roads to get to Auburn for summer workouts.

“It’s like being a high school freshman,” Big Cat said. “Right now it still feels like a dream. I still can’t believe I’m going to Auburn to play football.”

I’m all about the academics, I’m all about getting better and making my relationship with God better. I’m going there to play football, that’s why they’ve got me there. But I’m about all that. I’m about trying to be the guy that everybody sees me as and the guy I could be labeled as. That’s who I want to be. In order for me to be that person, I have to do the little things right.”

The plan is in place. Felton expects Big Cat to get bigger and stronger before he experiences his first fall camp later this year. If he can stay humble and healthy? Big Cat’s in for an illustrious career as a Tiger.

“The sky is the limit for him. Big Cat is going to be a household name,” Felton said. “I really believe that.”

I personally think he needs to get a bit stronger before he can get more snaps but there's no denying dude is super quick off the edge. Really excited to see him, Moultry and Britt develop up front over the next few seasons

Updates, notes from Auburn’s first summer recruiting camp (SECCountry)
quote:

AUBURN, Ala. — It’s camp season.

Auburn kicked off its summer filled with camps on Thursday. Gus Malzahn and his entire staff filed into the indoor practice facility to check out some of talent in town for the first camp of the summer. There were close to 100 prospects in attendance from the 2018, 2019 and 2020 recruiting classes.

Several of those prospects will end up on Auburn’s radar. Some were already there.

Take a look at a few notes SEC Country gathered at the camp.

Several Central High (Ala.) prospects attended the camp, and 4-star wide receiver Justyn Ross made the trip with them. He didn’t participate in camp, but Ross was on hand for the entirety of it. It was his second visit to Auburn in a week after visiting with his mother for Big Cat Weekend.

Supposedly Central is loaded with talent for the 2019 and 2020 classes

Pass-rusher target Richard Jibunor didn’t make it to Big Cat Weekend. Have no worries, Auburn fans. He returned to Auburn for a more personalized visit on Thursday after camping at Georgia (new staff still hasn’t offered) on Wednesday. Jibunor was walking around with fellow Nigerian football player Prince Tega Wanogho. Those two are characters. Wanogho — the dude is a giant — poked some fun at 6-foot-4, 215-pound Jibunor for being so small. It’s safe to say they’re both beasts.

Bama getting Quay Walker and probably JJ Peterson I imagine Jibunor is no longer a priority. The only team that scares me here is UGA but from their 247 guys it sounds like they going in different direction. Weight seems to be their concern as Jibunor is only 215 lbs. If that's the case it's hard not to see him sign with us though the Vols will put up a fight as they were his first offer.

All that to say really like our chances of snagging him at this point. If we do then I won't be that mad about losing out on Walker. Miss on both and that would really suck

A 2019 prospect that stood out, especially during testing drills, was safety Briton Allen from Lake Highland Prep in Orlando. He’s had offers from South Carolina, Maryland and North Carolina. He landed offers from N.C. State and Kentucky earlier in the week.

For those of you looking way ahead in recruiting, keep your eyes on 2020 defensive lineman Myles Murphy from Hillgrove High School in Georgia. He received his first offer from Georgia on June 2. He picked up an offer from Auburn at the camp.

I believe he's also a legacy

Auburn had several people in attendance with other Power 5 offers: cornerback Eugene Bowman IV, safety Keyon Helton, tight end Jake Peters, 2019 outside linebacker Mohamoud Diabate and 2019 wide receiver Ahmarean Brown. This will be updated if any of those prospects receive Auburn offers.

I don't know why but I feel like Diabate is a guy to keep an eye on. I think he's an instate kid but that's all off memory

Defensive coordinator Kevin Steele gave a speech to defensive targets after the camp. He didn’t want the content of that speech printed (as inspiring as it was). It was personal to the campers, so I’ll obviously honor that request. But I want to make a note saying how great of hands Auburn is in with Steele. I told him after his speech to the campers that I need him to stop by everyone morning to give me a start-your-day-off-right pep talk. When you hear Steele interact with young people, it’s no surprise the Auburn defense has made the turnaround it has.

I think Steele is just a good fit at AU. I don't think he's the most elite of DCs but he's simplified his system to allow athletes to play and his demeanor more matches AU imo

I reserve the right to throw all that out if our defense collapses

It wasn’t just Auburn’s coaches who got involved in the camp. A few players and former players were there. Sophomore defensive lineman Marlon Davidson had his whistle and helped Rodney Garner with defensive line drills. Recent grad Marcus Davis also came back for the camp.

Top LB target Richard Jibunor enjoys Auburn visit to spend time with close friend Prince Tega Wanogho (SECCountry)
quote:

AUBURN, Ala. — Richard Jibunor, just a rising senior, looks like a grown man next to most other recruits. Quite frankly, at 6-foot-3 and 210 pounds, the 4-star prospect looks grown next to most people.

That is until he stands next to Auburn offensive lineman Prince Tega Wanogho. Jibunor and Wanogho are close friends — “brothers” as Jibunor calls it. They’ve known each other since before either was a college football prospect, before either had even come to the United States from Nigeria.

After unexpectedly missing Big Cat Weekend, Jibunor returned to Auburn on Thursday. The duo spent much of the day together, including watching the Tigers’ camp and getting fresh haircuts at a local barber shop.

Even Jibunor is impressed by Wanogho’s physical growth.

“Oh size-wise, he’s a monster now,” Jibunor joked after his visit. “Me and Prince used to be just a little different (in stature). Now I bet he could crush my bones in less than a second.”

Jibunor and Wanogho have a bond that runs much deeper than most recruit-player relationships. In fact, Jibunor said one of the main reasons he wanted to make it back to Auburn on Thursday was to spend time with Wanogho who lost his mother earlier this year.

That doesn’t mean Wanogho is pushing Jibunor to Auburn, or that Jibunor’s decision will be based whatsoever on his close friend.

But it’s worth noting the two have a special bond.

“I always try to be there for him, like a brother, because he’s always been there for me, no matter what. The most important thing — he’s like a big brother to me — is that he’s happy. That’s all I care about. And he’s happy. I’m just there as a brother, looking up to him, taking his advice on everything,” Jibunor said. “He doesn’t really force me to come here, but he tells me how good it is, and he tells me they take good care of him. He tells me about the team and how the team is doing. He feels comfortable here right now.”

Jibunor still maintains that he will try to make his decision by August.

He has a few things to wait on, however.

Jibunor will attend the 5-star Rivals Challenge in Indianapolis this weekend. After that, he plans to make it Alabama to set in stone where he sits on the Crimson Tide’s recruiting board. He also wants to make a return trip to Tennessee and potentially make a visit to Florida who offered him this spring.

He visited Georgia on Tuesday for a camp, but the Bulldogs have still been hesitant to offer.

There is also a possibility he makes one more visit to Auburn before deciding.

“I might be back here before I announce,” Jibunor said. “Every chance I have to come here, I would definitely never miss it for anything because I always love being here. Down in my heart, it’s just fun for me. I feel very comfortable here.”

Jibunor has taken no steps to narrow down his favorite programs. Auburn is in as good of a position as any. Tennessee and Alabama are two other programs to keep a close eye on.

But don’t expect to see a “top list” from Jibunor.

“I might not even put the top schools. I might just come out and commit,” he said.

Tega is a massive, holy shite

KN said the other day he's the most impressive collegiate player he has seen. I can't wait till Tega is at one tackle spot and Ashley at another. Some legit NFL size will be on the field

Markaviest Bryant not ‘limited on anything’ during first few days on campus (SECCountry)
quote:

LAKE MARTIN, Ala. — Almost exactly a month ago, Auburn freshman Markaviest “Big Cat” Bryant sustained a freak injury when he accidentally put his arm through a glass window.

Now graduated and moved onto campus for summer workouts, the 4-star defensive end is back to normal in his new home. He’s seemingly learned his lesson and put the incident behind him completely.

Auburn coach Gus Malzahn, speaking at an Auburn club event at Lake Martin on Thursday night, said the newcomer has been doing well since landing on the Plains.

“You know, I don’t think he’s been limited on anything so far,” Malzahn said. “I haven’t heard anything other than the whole group is off to a good start; there haven’t been any limitations or injuries or anything like that.”

That’s been an important note during Big Cat’s first days in orange and blue, too, since most of that time has been spent with strength and conditioning coach Ryan Russell.

Next Generation: Auburn freshman Markaviest Bryant ready to be Big Cat for the Tigers

“Attitude’s been good,” Malzahn said. “The first week with coach Russell is always an interesting time when they’re learning about the standards and all that.”

Big Cat didn’t expect the cuts on his arm — the brief stay in the hospital included stitches and a minor procedure to ensure there was no nerve damage — to be a problem upon his graduation and departure for school.

“No, I won’t be limited,” Big Cat told SEC Country in early May. “Pain is temporary. I won’t be limited. It’ll be all right. I’ll be healed and right in time for when I get to Auburn.”

Big Cat’s healthy status could be huge as he looks to impress his new coaching staff during his first-ever fall camp in August.

“He plays young guys,” Malzahn said of defensive line coach Rodney Garner. “If they’re talented enough to do that.”

Curious to see if Jackson's transfer forces us to play more guys. I mean Garner rotates a ton of guys anyway but I wonder if he will be hesitant to redshirt in the future. Although that doesn't really jive with Garner's personality

Final 2 members of Auburn football’s incoming freshman class will enroll soon (SECCountry)
quote:

LAKE MARTIN, Ala. — Auburn football’s 2017 freshman class will be completely on campus in “a week and a half,” according to head coach Gus Malzahn.

Malzahn said Thursday night freshman defensive back Carlito Gonzalez and kicker Anders Carlson will enroll in time for the start of the second summer mini-semester on June 26.

“Those two, it’ll be about a week and a half,” Malzahn said before his Ambush Tour appearance with the Lake Martin Auburn Club. “Everything’s on go for that, and they’ll start that second summer session. They’re the only two out there, everybody else has checked in and has been off to a really good start.”

Gonzalez didn’t arrive with the rest of Auburn’s freshman class at the end of last month due to what he called a “family emergency.” The Georgia safety told Keith Niebuhr of Auburn Undercover that he would enroll in June.

Carlson, the younger brother of Auburn senior kicker Daniel Carlson, also had an expected delay in his enrollment. However, he’ll be on campus in mid-June with Gonzalez.

According to Malzahn, the freshman class is already hard at work getting acclimated to campus and workouts with strength and conditioning coach Ryan Russell.

“You always tell the guys show up in running shape, but there’s nothing like that first week with Coach Russell,” Malzahn said with a smile Thursday. “They have a lot of pride once they get through that, but it’s good. All the guys are off to a good start and we’re hearing really good reports.”

Where does Auburn turn at linebacker after Quay Walker commits to Alabama? (SECCountry)
quote:

Where does Auburn turn after Quay Walker miss?

Chop one off Auburn’s lengthy linebacker wish list.

Quay Walker committed to Alabama on Thursday via SEC Country. The 4-star linebacker from Crisp Co. (Ga.), who was high school teammates with Markaviest Bryant, picked the Crimson Tide. He called Auburn his No. 2 choice, but now the Tigers will get used to game planning against him.

It’s a major miss for Auburn. Editorializing here, Walker has a different way about him that will make him a superstar at every level of football. But it’s also a miss the Tigers can overcome with a few major pickups in the remainder of the class.

Here are the most-wanted guys to watch in the class at linebacker.

4-star JJ Peterson, Colquitt Co. (Ga.)
4-star Zakoby McClain, Valdosta (Ga.)
4-star Richard Jibunor, Athens Christian (Ga.)
4-star Channing Tindall, Spring Valley (S.C.)
4-star Michael Harris, Tucker (Ga.)

If Auburn can land any two from that group, it’s a solid class at the position. In a perfect world, take Jibunor in his own class of player since it’s hard to project if he’s an outside linebacker or if he’ll play the Buck position. From there, two out of four from Peterson, McClain, Tindall and Harris would be a success.

Peterson and Tindall have both admitted other programs are ahead of Auburn. Peterson prefers Alabama by a slight margin. Tindall has similar feelings about his home-state South Carolina Gamecocks.

It’s been quite some time since McClain made it to Auburn and named the Tigers his leader, but the Tigers remains in good shape. LSU and FSU are also teams to watch for McClain.

With Harris, stay focused on the June 17 visit to Columbus, Ohio. It’ll be his first time visiting Ohio State as a recruit after growing up his entire childhood as a major Buckeyes fan. Auburn has the best opportunity to pry Harris away from Ohio State, but it will be primarily dependent on the Buckeyes’ staff’s pitch to Harris on that upcoming visit.

Let’s do a quick worst-case scenario, just to stop any potential meltdowns in their tracks. Yes, the aforementioned players would all be championship-caliber pieces. But there is another layer of linebackers who could emerge if there are some misses.

Here are some of the other linebackers who have visited the Plains this year.

3-star La’Dedrick Jackson, Lanier (Ala.)
3-star Ernest Jones, Ware Co. (Ga) — South Carolina commit
3-star Braelen Oliver, Douglas Co. (Ga.)
3-star Matthew Flint, Madison Co. (Ala.)
3-star Shaka Heyward, Mill Creek (Ga.) — Duke commit

Jackson plans to return for camp next week. Aside from him, the Tigers haven’t shown any recent attention to any of the other four.

Peterson is going to Bama so it will come down to those other 4. I think we get 3 of those guys. In a perfect world we could take all 4 but doubt that happens. I want Jibunor & Harris. After that either Tindall or McClain is fine by me. I feel pretty confident T-WILL can pull it off

Two big 2019 visitors at Auburn

Looking ahead, Auburn hosted two 2019 prospects on Thursday who could be vital to the Tigers’ future.

Bo Nix, joined by his father and a few teammates, arrived on the Plains to camp on Thursday afternoon. They were greeted by a welcoming party of offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey and quarterback Jarrett Stidham. Nix maintains that he’s still closer to a year away from committing to any schools, but he’s already getting on-the-field time with Malzahn and Lindsey in a camp environment.

That’s huge.

The other big visitor was offensive tackle Michael Tarquin from Belleview (Fla.). He visited campus with his father and spent a bulk of his time with Herb Hand. Tarquin also got some 1-on-1 time with Gus Malzahn.

It is the start of a long visit schedule set up that will include Auburn, Clemson, South Carolina, Ohio State, Michigan and potentially others.

Tarquin isn’t ranked yet in the composite rankings, but 247Sports has him rated as the No. 13 offensive tackle in the nation and the No. 106 overall prospect.

2017 - Jarrett Stidham (Heisman, natty, #1 overall pick)
2018 - Justin Fields
2019 - Justin Fields
2020 - Justin Fields (Heisman, natty, #1 overall pick)
2021 - Bo Nix
2022 - Bo Nix (Heisman, natty, #1 overall pick)

Let's make this happen people

You really think Fields starting in 2018 is a best case scenario? Assuming Stidham goes pro after this season I think SW in his senior season or even Malik Willis in his redshirt freshman season would be a better option, then I could see Fields starting in 2019 assuming he doesn't turn into the next Jeremy Johnson.

I wouldn't count out Malik Willis against any of them.
