Michael Thomas has reached agreement with the New Orleans Saints on a five-year, $100 million extension that includes $61 million guaranteed and makes him the NFL's highest-paid wide receiver, league sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Wednesday.

Made him the highest paid WR ever. Julio is the best WR in football, Arthur is going to have to open up the checkbook.

BTW, I’m surprised the Aints went this big. ESPN seems to be questioning as well

quote:

And it's a hard price tag for the Saints to absorb, since they also just signed All-Pro defensive end Cameron Jordan to a lucrative contract extension this summer and have more expensive deals on the horizon (Brees, running back Alvin Kamara, cornerback Marshon Lattimore and offensive tackles Terron Armstead and Ryan Ramczyk, among others in the next couple years).

quote:

As usual, the Saints will have to get creative with their bookkeeping to fit Thomas under the salary cap and to keep their loaded roster together in future years. They had about $12 million in cap space before Thomas' new deal, after they also signed All-Pro defensive end Cameron Jordan to a lucrative contract extension earlier this offseason.

The Saints already have more than $26 million in "dead money" scheduled to count against their salary cap in 2020 because of the way they have structured Brees' contract. Next year, Brees, backup quarterback Teddy Bridgewater and guard Andrus Peat, among others, are scheduled to be free agents. Then Kamara, guard Larry Warford and linebacker Demario Davis come due in 2021, followed by cornerback Marshon Lattimore and offensive tackles Terron Armstead and Ryan Ramczyk in 2022.

Big time receiver when it counts:

Thomas in the NFC Championship vs. the Rams:

REC TGTS YDS AVG TD
4 7 36 9.0 0

Meanwhile, Julio Jones in the NFC Championship Game:
9 receptions, 180 yards, and two TDs

Rhino5 - The Saints have WON a SuperBowl so the term "aints" aint a word no more ya heard. Your Falcounts can't handle the big stage even when up by 20+ points. Just so you know big boy.

Falcons restructure Jake Matthews and Ricardo Allen contracts, clear $5M in cap space

The Falcons restructured the contracts of LT Jake Matthews and FS Ricardo Allen early on Wednesday, freeing up approximately $5M in cap space. This is presumably to make way for Julio Jones’ impending extension

Ok, we'll call you Taints right now, and then once Drew Brees' arm falls off this year we'll move you back into the Aints category.

That's why all the bullshite chicken little talk yesterday about Julio possibly not playing this weekend was ridiculous. He'll have a contract by Friday.

There was no way they were going into the season without Julio. It's irritating that the beat writers and media folks spread shite like that tweet I posted from McClure.

I wouldn't waste a dime on Julio. The Falcons have far bigger problems. Paying that much money to a receiver will cripples this team.

I’d rather laugh at a guy whose a fan of a decent team and nothing better to do.

And don’t spend money on single player on the roster.

That's fair. However, the Failcons will have to stay in the Never Was category.

It seems to me The Pats are the only team in The NFL that really understands player value. This will be of minor value to The Saints' chances of winning.

Get open...catch ball.

The Falcons should be 100% about putting together a championship level team in Matt Ryan's window. JJ has more value as trade bait than he does to the team's prospects of winning a Super Bowl within Ryan's 5 or 6 year window.

Julio Jones isn't going anywhere.

Guys - the season went off the tracks, but it's mostly due to coaching and laughably bad "fringe" personnel decisions.

Does anyone remember 2008? Coming off the Vick disaster, we thought it'd be years before we'd be relevant again. We didn't even have a QB.

We brought in TD, and Mike Smith. Drafted Matt Ryan. Signed Michael Turner. Went 11-5, and came a blown Saints lead (Carolina walk-off kick) in week 17 from winning the division.

The potential GM and OBVIOUS coaching hire are going to be absolutely massive. However, we're looking at a very similar transition state that we has in 2007-2008.

We're going to pick high in the draft. We'll have a new, hungry, and forward thinking regime.

Above all - fellas, we have a great core of players. Considering the active roster is 45 men deep, things can quite literally happen in a season or 2. Carolina went 1-15 in 2001, and was a kick out of bounds from potentially winning the Super Bowl in 2003. It happens all the time.

Offensively we have:
- Ryan
- Jones
- Ridley
- Hooper
- Mack (expect to keep him for next year - no suitable replacement IMO, and cap hit isn't big enough to justify anything)
- Lindstrom
- McGary

We'll need to take a look at RB in FA or in the draft, but, that's a hole we can plug. FWIW, I think Kenyan Drake would be a great compliment to Ito Smith.

Defensively, it gets tricky. But, there are guys I would go to battle with any day:
- Neal
- Rico
- Takk
- DeBo
- Sheffield
- Cominsky
- Grady

You're going to need to get some help big time on defense in the draft, but, I saw us go to the Super Bowl with 4 rookies starting.

The Patriots model consists of understanding and managing high turnover. But, they've had several stallwarts with Brady, Hightower, Chung, McCourty, Edelman, VanNoy, Andrews, that they keep around because (1) they can play well, and (2) they're leaders and high character guys.

This isn't the season we wanted, but, maybe it's the season we needed. It's pretty clear that 2016 was more Shanahan, less Quinn. If the Super Bowl is our goal, we are better off knowing this now than going a flimsy 9-7, and maybe getting another divisional appearance based on our offensive talent alone.

If this shite-sandwich of a season yields us a strong draft class, and a competent coaching staff that's willing to hold our players accountable... we'll be just fine.

Again - we've got a great owner, and are set at QB. Those two obstacles are forever going to be the ultimate hurdle to consistent competition.
