Camargo at 3rd, Riley in LF.

Braves won and phillies lost, 2 1/2 games out hope they keep going. Take out the relievers after the walks before the homer comes like tonight.

that's a downgrade both offensively and defensively in my opinion

Not permanently, JD has it locked, and we're going to try and get our money's worth out of him. I'd like to see Johan get more playing time and at bats, but that's hard to do right now. He has 90 AB's. For perspective Ender has 124. Hope they figure out a way to get him to the plate more often.

ESPN on Soroka. And LOL at the Marlins joke in there:
quote:
Soroka has an unusual delivery, in which he tilts back with his upper body as he brings his pitching arm behind him and then kind of slings the ball in what seems like an almost effortless delivery, at least compared to the all-max effort we see from so many pitchers these days. Unique deliveries are also rare these days, and Soroka's is different enough that he's going to be one of those guys with whom you catch a glance of his windup and immediately know who is pitching. He doesn't give up home runs. After pitching seven scoreless innings in the Braves' 4-0 victory over the Cardinals on Wednesday, Soroka has pitched 36? innings without allowing a home run (and 56? innings going back to last season). Considering that you can't run to the bathroom without missing two home runs these days (well, unless the Marlins are playing), that's a remarkable achievement and a testament to the kind of movement he gets on his sinking fastball and the deception he has in his delivery that minimizes solid contact.
He's 21 years old. Soroka has allowed one earned run or fewer in all six of his starts to begin the season. The only other pitcher 21 or younger to do that in the live ball era since 1920 was another rookie, Fernando Valenzuela in 1981, when he had seven, five of which were shutouts.
quote:
Soroka's hot start -- he's 4-1 with a 0.98 ERA
quote:
Most impressive rookies 1 and 1A: Soroka and Chris Paddack. It's hard to separate these two, but I think they're both future aces if they prove durable. Paddack has the better strikeout rate and throws a little harder, and Soroka gets all those grounders. Both are fun to watch and confident, with a great feel for pitching.

right, not permanently, but for this season I think we are better with Donaldson playing every day and Camargo coming off the bench. And unfortunately for Camargo, I don't see him getting the 3B job over Riley next year either. One of those 2 will probably be in the outfield though, unless Waters and Pache both make the team, or we sign/trade for someone who is a clear upgrade.
To me, for 2019, the team is just much better off with the depth provided by having Camargo on the bench rather than being the everyday 3B.

Yeah, it's going to be interesting what they do in a couple years. Riley at 3rd with an outfield of Acuna, Pache, and probably Waters. Waters is tearing up AA- Mississippi right now, .335 BA, .888 OPS. I guess the question is will Camargo be content as a super utility player with the Braves or will another team try and get him as an everyday player.

Wouldn't surprise me if we just get our 6 years out of Camargo and then let him hit free agency to explore options as an everyday player.

I can't go tonight too far away, but I ordered one:
Posted on 5/16/19 at 7:12 pm to dudeabides
In the 2nd, Riley hit one 2 inches from a homer off the brick wall, then McCann got a sac fly and Julio a sac bunt both for RBI's. 2-0 Braves, and the phillies lost.
Posted on 5/16/19 at 7:35 pm to dudeabides
In the 3rd: Markakis, Riley and Julio all got RBI hits! 5-0 Braves
Posted on 5/16/19 at 8:54 pm to dudeabides
Markakis came up big in the 6th, he's back! 8-1 Braves
Posted on 5/16/19 at 9:12 pm to dudeabides
Acuna hit an RBI in the 7th. 9-1 Braves
Posted on 5/16/19 at 9:37 pm to dudeabides
Julio lowered his ERA to 3.88 after his 5 shutout IP tonight.
I'm glad Acuña looks ok after that impact with the wall.

Looking over the list of Atlanta Braves who in HRs in first MLB game, I thought it was pretty cool that I have seen the vast majority of them as they happened (TV, not in person unfortunately)
2019, Riley
2013, Gattis. Thank God for MLB.tv
2010, Heyward. I had recently gotten back from a deployment and the cable guy just got done hooking up my cable before his at bat.
2009, Schafer. Watching at a hotel in Springfield, VA. I remember feeling bad for Schafer because I can't stand Jon Miller and hated Miller had the call.
2005, Francoeur. Deployed :/
1998, Malloy. Who??? The only time I remember hearing this guy's name was Miller or someone on that 2005 telecast mentioning his name after Schafer's HR.
1996, Dye. I remember being disappointed in his trade to KC and wonder what would have happened to him if it wasn't for that freak injury towards the end of the season (maybe playoffs?) with the A's.
1978, Horner. Before my time.

I was a kid in the 80s that watched the Braves and liked Murphy and Horner the best... saw the game in ATL where Horner hit 4 hr's but not his first too young. I had to google Marty Malloy the MLB debut homer guy in '98, he spent almost all his time in the minors and only played in 11 games for the ATL Braves.
