LITTLE ROCK (KATV) — A police crash report releases more details in a Thursday morning collision involving a train and 18-wheeler that led to the death of a Little Rock Port Authority employee.

Two employees, Donald Melton and Scotty Allen, were acting as spotters on the back of a Little Rock Port Authority train, which was pushing eight cars south on the tracks, when they saw an 18-wheeler approached the crossing at Frazier Pike.

According to the report, Allen noticed the truck, which was hauling metal pipes, did not appear to be stopping so he radioed back to the train engineer, Michael Stapp, to begin emergency braking.

At that point, Allen and Melton jumped from the train, which then hit the truck at the point where the trailer connects to the cab. The collision forced the rear train car off the tracks and it landed on Melton, who was pronounced dead on the scene by the Pulaski County coroner's office.

The driver of the 18-wheeler, Jesse Bingham, told authorities he did not see any lights or warning signals when approaching the tracks. The police report says the railroad crossing was only equipped with a crossbuck traffic sign.

Bingham said he was driving over the tracks when he saw the train coming but did not have time to react.

Bingham was taken to a medical center, where he gave a breath and urine sample. His breath results came back as 0.00 and his urine sample was sent off for analysis.

The collision is still being investigated.
