Harry, I lived in central Arkansas at the time it all began. Nutt was an egotistical, maniacal, sanctimonious jerk at times. He had his very close friends, allies, and then scoffed at those who didn't follow his clique. I felt it firsthand working with him a few times.
It was past time for him to leave, imho. Although the hogville message wasn't to way to handle it. Classless.

as I think I've posted 100 times, I wanted Nutt fired in 2003 after our incredibly talented team barely stumbled into the pathetic Independence Bowl
Nutt embodies the pompous Little Rock superiority complex (which evolved into an angry inferiority complex) and I have at least three friends who coached for him and got the hell out ASAP
so if you think I'm defending Nutt, no, I'm bashing Nutt and I'm bashing his Springdale enemies even worse, the same people who declared war on Petrino the minute he got into town, right after Nutt left
as for Nutt's on the field product, our defense was always respectable under him, run game very sound, and passing game completely infuriating. He was the hardest hard head on the planet in regard to passing progression. Saying he was a decade behind on passing progression is being kind. I'm pretty sure he even refused to listen to Joe Ferguson.

I remember after the 2004 season that DC Dave Womack was fired. What? Arkansas had a solid defense that year but the offense was a problem that needed to be addressed. So instead of taking the blame and trying to fix the problem, he blamed his offensive problems on the defense because he was insecure and didn't like anyone critical of his passing game.
Also the rumors were that Joe had an argument with Nutt and stormed off. I met with Joe before and he is serious and all business. That type of personality didn't sit well with Nutt. So pissing off one of the best QBs for the Buffalo Bills history was really stupid.
