Smith will give us a recruiting presence in the Northeast, don't expect big results, but don't be surprised if we pull 1-2 good recruits from the NE every year.
Rutgers fans wanted him back, badly. Their defense went from 4th under Smith to 81st in 2013.

I do recall Bielema mentioning NJ as a place we'd hit. They got after Hilliman early and seemed to never have a chance or possibly Thomas cooled on him after seeing how Collins and Marshall played and looking ahead to the instate class in 2015 and 2016. Hilliman signed with Boston College.
New Jersey pumps out pretty decent talent, it's gonna be a bitch pulling them from Franklin at PSU though.

he captivates a room no matter where he is and players gravitate towards him
Then why didn't we hire him during the final weeks of recruiting season if this is true?
Edit: never mind, we all are asking the same fricking thing.

I think I'm ok with this hire by 2B's. Hopefully this cat can recruit.

he wasn't hired to recruit though he might pull a few every year
he was hired to call plays and teach

We can jump to conclusions and believe the worst . Or we can jump to conclusions and believe the best. Unless Bert says why he waited that's all we can do

TL;DR
"Converting senior Khaseem Greene from safety and junior Jamal Merrell from wide receiver and then unconventionally sending senior Steve Beauharnais to blitz down the middle has given Rutgers one of the best linebacker corps in the nation.
No one stands out in size, all ranging from 220-230 pounds, but the Scarlet Knights have assembled an elite unit from unusual parts.
“We may not be the biggest in stature or size, but you know what, we are tough,” Greene said. “We play with an attitude and an aggression about us. That makes us unique. We run to the ball and we’ll overtake plays. There’s a lot of things about this linebacker corps and this defense in general that we do differently than anyone in the nation.”
Greene and the rest of the linebackers have more than words to back that up.
The starting three and sophomore Kevin Snyder have combined for 153 tackles this season, and it is not uncommon that one takes place far from where the linebacker took his position.
Defensive coordinator Robb Smith employs a playbook that often forces the linebackers to either blitz or cover a receiver.
Greene rose to that challenge last Saturday against Syracuse when he recorded 1.5 sacks, an interception, three forced fumbles and 1.5 of his 14 tackles for a loss.
More important to Rutgers (6-0, 3-0) than Greene’s personal accomplishments were his attributes to the entire defense, whose seven-game streak of allowing opponents fewer than 100 yards rushing lived another day.
The Orange ran for 62 net yards, even though they gained 107.
“That’s in the past right now but at the same time, we always want to hold them under 100 yards,” Merrell said. “It’s our big goal that we like to hang on every game. We just have to focus on it and forget last week against Syracuse.”
Oh and i saw where someone said Smith was hired by Tampa Bay on 2-7-13 so im not sure if that would have anything to do with it
