Why would he be a great hire? He only coached tight ends two years 20 years go

Maybe I'm missing something

NFL connections. It's a great recruiting tool when a guy can say i used to be an NFL talent scout and I know what they're looking for and I can make you into that player.

This is from his old Baylor profile so he coached them more than just 2 years.

1990-91 Arkansas, graduate assistant
1992 Tennessee-Chattanooga, tight ends
1993 Clemson, receivers & tight ends
1994-05 Rice, defensive line & tight ends
2006-07 Madison (Texas) HS, assistant
2008-present Baylor, defensive ends

He also would give the Arkansas connection many want witout being part of the good ole boy network.

Also would have recruiting connections in TX from his time there.

Played the position here and briefly in the NFL so obviously he knows what is needed. Add in that he is currently a scout and I think it would be a good hire.

hmmmmmm, interesting.

He does seem to fit the holes. I'd support.

Per Otis on 247:

quote:

Bret Bielema is closing in on his final hire on his coaching staff. The last hire will be announced by Friday and reportedly three people are getting interviews for the position. The hire may come as a surprise to people, but it's a route that Bielema has apparently chosen to go. Personally, I like it, but then again I believe a coach should be allowed to hire who he wants. Stay tuned to this site for more details as I can release them.

So Bielema would rather hire a high school coach from AR than retain Tim Horton

Sources tell John Bond and Barry Lunney Jr. have interviewed with Bret Bielema for the tight ends job. LINK

Those would both be interesting hires. John Bond probably has the best resume. LINK

Is Barry Lunney Jr coaching at Bentonville?

Yes. Would be interesting for sure. I hope it's Bond but I guess I have to trust Bielema. It's obvious he knows what he's doing when it comes to his staff.

Lunney would probably be a legit recruiter however and instate coaches love the guy.

Yes, we need someone that can lock down the in-state recruits. Our 4's and 5's should all go to Fayetteville unless there is no room and/or they just don't like the Razorbacks...

Politics are playing a big part in the final addition to the staff.
