I agree Herb is not very good. I remember when Jason Veltkamp was here under Petrino, and I really liked his philosophy. It wasn't just about weightroom numbers. The weightroom is a tool to help your athletes perform on the field. I suppose that's why Veltkamp is now the strength coach for the Browns.

I think Herb is obsessed with weightroom numbers (or at least it seems so from his numbers). He's willing to sacrifice a lot to put a few pounds on a guy or to get his weightroom numbers up, but that may not translate to a better player on the field.

Several years ago, a player who played for Petrino (not exactly a "name" guy but can't remember who it was) did sort of an impromptu AMA on Tardville. I asked him about Veltkamp and his S&C program. From what I can remember, he said Veltkamp did a good job of marrying a strength program with speed and conditioning, and that they focused a lot on flexibility in their workouts. He also said they did a ton of running and cone drills. If you go back and look at the S&C YouTube videos from the Petrino era, you'll see a lot of 3 cone, 40, powerclean and vertical jump.

Herb seems to have a high school S&C program where it's solely based on max rep strength training and doesn't focus on conditioning or speed and isn't tailored to individual position groups. In quite literally every interview with Herb over the last 5 years, I've heard him use the phrase "max rep in the squat rack." His program essentially treats a football game as if every play is 4th and 1 and it's a man-on-man push.

He's an unbelievably bad S&C coach.
