Ladies and Gents football is right around the corner and I have a question.

What brand or type of smoker/grill do you recommend? I prefer charcoal as it just tastes better than gas and I am not looking for a large multi burner.

I have had a five gas burner previously and it seemed over kill even for large parties. I sold it to the movers as it was my chance to get back to charcoal, ha.

My old neighbor in Beverly Hills had one similar to this... LINK

We cooked some mean meat on this bad boy as he was from Memphis but went to FSU. Any recommendations for something of this or better quality and smaller?

I do not want anything permanent as I will be in Hong Kong for an extended time period. These hippie bastards have screwed up my cooking skills after being away from Arkansas for nine years. We are about to fix that.

iPhone. (No Internet at the new crib until tomorrow)

For the tailgate

This at home.

I prefer using charcoal and wood, (not wood chip)

Me and my friend are building one like this but with Propane burners. We found a Butane tank that will be big enough to cook a whole hog in.

My dad built one and it is great. The temperature control of the propane burners along with the smoke from the wood is unbeatable.

Do you have a link to the smaller one used at home?

Any cons you wish you could alter?

I also like to use wood and charcoal therefore it sounds like we have similar tastes.

How much fun. Post pictures when y'all finish as projects are always a blast. That is a little much for what I need.

Smoke some meat

It works great at the tailgates. Cheaper version of the Oklahoma Joe's that I use at home.

I found the Longhorn for $499 at home depot verses cheaper versions on amazon. Do you think the seals and welding is that much better for a $250 difference?

I know the more seasoned a grill becomes the better flavor sealing, and aroma is noticed. The variety in grilling is so wide these days.

I just ran on down to Lowes and Home Depot to check out the quality of the builds. The Okie Joe does have a much nicer weight to her compared to cheaper models.

After more research I am debating now from picking up the cheaper model and making these modifications verses a higer end model. LINK

Your best bet is the Weber Smokey mountain series.
It will seal up better than most of what's been listed giving you better temp control and longer
burn times with your charcoal and wood chunks.

For grilling, a Weber Kettle, One Touch Gold 22.5" & for smoking, a Weber Smoky Mountain 22.5". The Weber Kettle is pretty versatile and does a decent job smoking as well.

For whatever grill you choose, I highly recommend GrillGrates. They make for great grill marks, protect against flare-ups, and are low maintenance. A lot of grilling competitions are being won using GrillGrates. If you get a smoker, I HIGHLY recommend the Maverick ET-732 wireless thermometer. It gives you grate temperature and food temperature, delivered wirelessly to your little "baby monitor" so that you keep doing other things without needing to make repeated trips to check at the smoker. I just about won't smoke without it.

Great advice on the Maverick, great tool. Let's me drink beer across the street at the neighbors and still know exactly whats going on.

PROBABLY not what people are looking for, but I'd highly recommend at least checking out https://www.traegergrills.com/. My best friend has a Traeger and it's EASILY my preferred method for outdoor cooking. They use pellets for energy, coming in all kinds of flavors (Mequite, maple, hickory, oak, etc, etc).

They're expensive, though. Here's what is listed on Amazon:

Traeger Junior for $299

Traeger Lil Texas Elite for $940

Traeger Texas for $878

They've got many other models, but these were the only ones on Amazon. I don't know if you can justify the cost, but I wholeheartedly think these are a perfect "in-between" for people who want something quicker than charcoal without the tastelessness of propane.

Edit: fixed links.
