Alabama track and field earned its seventh weekly honor of the season, the Southeastern Conference announced Tuesday. Crimson Tide sprinter and 2024 Olympic finalist Samuel Ogazi was named the Men's Co-Runner of the Week, the first weekly award of his sophomore campaign.

Competing at the Tiger Track Classic, in Auburn, Ala., Ogazi captured the event title in his 400-meter season debut, clocking 44.98. His first-place time broke the Hutsell-Rosen Track facility record and is currently the fifth-fastest time in the nation.

Through six weeks of outdoor competition, the Crimson Tide has notched six SEC weekly honors and one USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week accolade. Last week, Doris Lemngole (Women's Runner, USTFCCCA National Athlete) and Dismus Lokira (Men's Freshman) received weekly recognition. Earlier this season, Katelyn Adel (Women's Freshman) received the weekly award on April 1, while Oussama El Bouchayby (Men's Co-Runner) and Trevor Gunzell (Men's Field Athlete) earned recognition the week of March 25.

Doris Lemngole Wins Honda Sport Award for Cross Country

The sophomore is the second Honda Award for Cross Country winner in Crimson Tide history

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama's Doris Lemngole was named the Honda Sport Award for Cross Country winner, it was announced by Chris Voelz, Executive Director of THE Collegiate Women Sports Awards (CWSA).

In addition to winning the 2024 Honda Sport Award for Cross Country, Lemngole was a finalist during her freshman campaign in 2023.

In her two years with the Crimson Tide, Lemngole has become a standout performer for the Crimson Tide as she used a late-race breakaway to finish as the 2024 NCAA Cross Country national champion, after finishing as the runner-up in 2023. Hailing from West Pokot County, Kenya, she was also named the 2024 National Women's Athlete of the Year for Cross Country by the USTFCCCA.

Doris Lemngole Said
"It is an honor to receive this award from the CWSA and Honda; it means a lot to me. I want to give a special shout out to my coaches, my teammates and everyone who has supported and believed in me. Our team's support staff and the University of Alabama have also played a big role in helping me reach this success. Coming to Alabama has been a dream come true, and I am very grateful for all of the academic support I have received, in addition to the athletic support. I'm thankful for this honor, and I am just looking forward to another great season with my team, my coaches and my teammates."

Head Coach Dan Waters Said
"We are all extremely proud of Doris. She represents the best of Alabama, and we are so excited for her to receive the Honda Sport Award for Cross Country. This is an award that represents the fierce and humble drive, and devoted dedication and tireless hard work that Doris uses to attack everything she does in life. Doris genuinely embodies the Honda Award's core values as a student, as an athlete and as a person, most importantly. We are very proud to have now had two Honda Sport Award winners in our program's history, but I'm more proud of what this means for Doris."

Glenn Putyrae Steps Down as Head Coach of Alabama Rowing

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Glenn Putyrae has made the decision to step down as head coach of Alabama rowing following his seventh season at the helm.

"I am thankful to have had the opportunity to serve as head coach of Alabama rowing for the past seven years," Putyrae said. "This decision did not come easily, however it was the right one for us at this time to be more available and present for my family. I'm proud of our accomplishments on the water and in the classroom and appreciate the student-athletes and staff for their contributions to the program and for laying the foundation for future success."

Putyrae arrived in Tuscaloosa in June of 2018 following his second stint as head coach at Gonzaga. The 2019 Big 12 Coach of the Year guided the Tide to its first appearance in the NCAA Championship regatta in 2021 and led Alabama to a trio of second-place finishes (2019, 2021, 2022) and a pair of top-three finishes (2023, 2024) at the Big 12 Championships.

Putyrae's teams have spent multiple weeks in the Pocock CRCA Top 25 poll while also boasting 17 All-Big 12 honorees and the program's first All-American.

Academically, the Tide has had 31 Collegiate Rowing Association Scholar Athletes under Putyrae's watch along with two CSC Academic All-Americans.

"We appreciate Coach Putyrae and all he's helped contribute to Alabama rowing over the last seven years," said Alabama Director of Athletics Greg Byrne. "He took our program to new heights, and we wish Glenn and his family all the best going forward."

A national search will begin immediately for the Crimson Tide's next head coach.

I really know next to nothing about rowing. But the facilities look impressive and hope the University is willing to invest in the team. Looking forward to a day on the river in the fall. And have gotten quite a few comments on my UA rowing tshirt! RTR

Doris Lemngole Defends Steeplechase Title, Tide Wins Three Medals on Day Two of SEC Championships

Lemngole became the league’s first back-to-back winner in the event since the 2015 and 2016 seasons, while Katelyn Adel (women’s heptathlon) and Mariia Horielova (women’s long jump) added silver medals to the Tide’s haul

LEXINGTON, Ky. – On the second day of the Southeastern Conference Outdoor Championships, Alabama track and field's Doris Lemngole glided through the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:20.83) and successfully defended her title to become the league's first back-to-back winner in the event since the 2015-16 seasons.

Joining Lemngole with podium finishes of their own were Katelyn Adel and Mariia Horielova. Adel accumulated a personal-best 5,619-point total in the women's heptathlon to take second-place overall. With the feat, Adel is now Alabama's fourth SEC silver medalist in the event. Horielova, meanwhile, needed only her first attempt in the women's long jump event final (6.37m | 20-10.75) to secure her second-place finish.

Nine additional student-athletes, across five events, contributed to the UA men's and women's team totals – Miracle Ailes (women's high jump | 1.78m | 5-10), Carson Burian (men's 3,000m steeplechase | 8:56.96), Christopher Crawford (men's shot put | 19.20m | 63-0), Trevor Gunzell (men's shot put | 19.21m | 63-0.25), Treneese Hamilton (women's shot put | 16.81m | 55-2), John Landers (men's decathlon | 7,233 points), Ezekiel Pitireng (men's 3,000m steeplechase | 8:45.52), Lilly Walters (women's 3,000m steeplechase | 10:10.77) and Mye'Joi Williams (women's shot put | 17.77m | 58-3.75).

Alabama concluded the second day of competition with the men in third place with 42 points, while the women sit in second with 38 points.

Doris Lemngole, Samuel Ogazi Capture Gold on Final Day of SEC Championships

Lemngole became the Crimson Tide’s first women’s 5,000-meter winner since 2022, as Ogazi secured the program’s first 400-meter gold medal since 2011

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Alabama track and field's Doris Lemngole calmly captured her second gold medal in as many days, as the standout sophomore clocked UA's all-time second-fastest run in the women's 5,000m (15:11.62). Before the day was done, Samuel Ogazi won the 400-meter gold medal to help the Crimson Tide close the final day of the Southeastern Conference Championships with a pair of individual titles.

Lemngole's title marked the Crimson Tide's first women's 5,000-meter first-place finish since Mercy Chelangat won back-to-back during the 2021 and 2022 seasons. Ogazi, a Nigerian native and 2024 Paris Olympian, became UA's first 400-meter gold medalist since fellow UA Olympian Kirani James (Grenada) won the conference title for the Tide in back-to-back years in 2010 and 2011.

Six additional student-athletes, across three events, contributed to the UA men's and women's team totals – Christopher Crawford (men's discus | 58.07m | 190-6), Oussama El Bouchayby (men's 800m | 1:46.07), Dennis Kipruto (men's 5,000m | 13:50.78), Victor Kiprop (men's 5,000m | 13:51.11), Brenda Tuwei (women's 5,000m | 15:42.68) and Christopher Young (men's discus | 59.01m | 193-7).

Alabama concluded the conference championships with the men in third place with 85 points, while the women finished tied-for-ninth with 52 points.
