He recruited about every good Florida player Florida had under Donovan and he has recruited a team full of really good players at Dayton. He can obviously recruit.

If we had held onto Grant 4 more years he may have had us ranked in the top 5 like he does Dayton but a lot of our fans were so against him he left on his own.
Sure why not

He couldn’t recruit here, so obviously, he can’t recruit as a head coach at a power 5 school.

He was given 6 years and he went to 1 NCAAT. When a coach does that at Alabama they are fired, and rightfully so.

I agree I just think that he would've gotten it turned around here, I wasn't really for keeping him or anything but in retrospect it may have been a good idea. Hindsight is 20/20.
He really only had one bad team here. He won over 18 games 4 times here out of 6 years and won over 20 games 3 out of 6 years. He wasn't terrible.

Get out of here with this bullshite. Grant is just better as a mid major coach than he is at a Power 5. He couldn’t recruit and our roster was so depleted, we were lucky to have a team. Can’t blame fans for a coach that can’t fill up his team.
I'm pretty stupid when it comes to basketball. But why is it easier to make the top5 with a G5 team than with a P5 team in basketball?
Seems like it should be the other way around.
Also, does P5 and G5 still apply in basketball really?

His last 2 years weren't close to NCAAT teams and the roster he left Avery was bad. If somehow he totally restarted things then maybe 2-3 years down the road and then he's been at Alabama 8-10 years with 1 NCAAT?
Nah, it was the right move. Some guys work at certain places and not others. College basketball is filled with guys like that.

That's a fair point. He hadnt been a coach long and apparently he was learning on the job, 3 years later he sure seems to have figured it out.

His one really bad team is the only really bad team we've had in 20 years. Literally.

I love the guy and am super happy for what he has going at Dayton. He's a great human being and I still hate that it didn't work here.

True and Battle tried to get him to come back for another year and Grant said no thanks. Then he went to Dayton and is kicking arse. Not a great look for us imo.

A lot has to do with recruiting. You have to be able to bring talent in to a power 5 school to compete or at least have a solid system.
Just look at Shaka Smart. He’s going to get canned after this season, but if he goes to a mid major, I believe he’ll light it up again

He recruited about every player on Floridas team that won back to back NCs under Donavan.

Won’t surprise me if Grant replaces Mike White at Florida and does great there.

This is a little misleading. He went and sat on the bench at Oklahoma City for awhile because no one was knocking at his door. He didn’t go straight to Dayton and start kicking arse

He's also at a traditional elite mid-major (just like he was at VCU).
Dayton and VCU have consistently been at the top of their leagues for 20 years through multiple coaches. Certain mid majors have a culture, system, pipeline and spending in place that give them massive built in advantages over their peers.
With that said he found Toppin and the other upperclassmen and has a GREAT team, but I'll be curious to see if they are great once Toppin and the rest of the roster roll off.

I agree about VCU they seem to win no matter who their coach is. Great program.

Do you have a link for that info? I’m sure Donavan had nothing to do with any of those recruitments

Because Battle was a fool

He went to OKC with Donovan, THEN he went to Dayton. And his first year at Dayton was awful, his 2nd the NIT and now with a roster filled with upperclassmen and a lottery pick they are very good.

It’s what was said when Grant was hired here, he was supposedly a great recruiter and I agree with you that he obviously didn't recruit very well here.
