Tough Football Is Schematic

You can talk all you want to about wanting a tough football team, and you can condition your arse off, and work your arse off in the weight room.
Real toughness on the field is schematic and philosophical.
When your offense is about the shotgun formation, and throwing all over the field - built around passing the ball.
When your defense is about bend but dont break, playing soft and giving up yardage but not TDs.
That creates a soft identity. It creates a soft team.
When you play smashmouth up front, physical fricking offense, and aggressive run-stopping defense, THAT is what breeds toughness.
We don't have it. We can out-finesse. We cannot out-physical anyone.

He and Grubb and probably most of the staff just don’t have hardass coaching and football play in their DNA. It’s not who they are or how they approach the game. Hell, we get excited when he mildly argues a bad call.

They won’t understand this.
They believe if an offense is soft, lost and can’t convert a 1st down let alone control the clock, making teams 1-dimensional and taking them out of their gameplan , or if your offense lines up in Empty about as many times as they hand the ball off, which results in going 3-n-out and turning the ball over like
it’s a race….NONE of that matters. Those things do NOT affect football games. They are just excuses.
A good defense should still hold top10 opponents to less than 20 points.
Forcing turnovers deep in your opponents territory is also insignificant.
Ball control, field position, time of possession, physically wearing teams down doesn’t matter. Those are just taking points.
If the opponent gets the ball 20 times a game inside your own 10 yard line then there’s no reason for them to score. Good defense doesn’t allow a team to score.
Defenses do not allow points or yards. If Clemson runs 100 plays vs 2016 Bama D then it should’ve ended 40-0, not a 45-40 loss. That’s a shite defense that was too mentally weak to finish the game.
