Travis Reier (BOL) on Women's Basketball

quote:

First, it was a testament to Pat Summitt's greatness at UT that the crowd was bigger for Alabama's matchup with the unranked Lady Vols than it was for No. 3 South Carolina on Monday.

I wrote earlier in the week about UA's improvement under Kristy Curry and while this UT team won't be confused for some of the great Lady Vols teams of the past, tonight was still a very positive step for Curry's program.

Again, it's important to note that UA has been without its best player, Ashley Williams, all season, so it's not like the Crimson Tide had all of its weapons Thursday night.

What Alabama does seem to have is a culture that bodes well for the future. With Williams and a strong group of underclassmen coming back to go along with a highly-regarded recruiting class, the table is set for UA to take another step in 2016-2017.

As for UT, talent isn't the issue. With 2014 ACC player of the year Diamond DeShields and point guard recruit Te'a Cooper joining an already solid roster, it shouldn't have been, anyway.

What UT has in talent, it never seemed to be able to equal in team chemistry. How else do you explain a program-record 12 losses this season under fourth-year coach Holly Warlick?

Curry seemingly has instilled the mindset needed to move UA women's hoops back to contender status. Next year, she'll have even more SEC-caliber talent to go along with it.

Bringing the two together isn't always easy. Just ask Warlick.

Lunardi has VCU, Syracuse, Butler and Cincinnati in the tournament right now. He has us as the 5th team out.

Alabama
16-11 (7-8)
52nd RPI
22nd SOS
1-5 vs Top 25
5-6 vs Top 50
6-9 vs Top 100
10-2 vs 100+

VCU
20-8 (12-3)
63rd RPI
88th SOS
1-1 vs Top 25
2-3 vs Top 50
4-6 vs Top 100
16-2 vs 100+

Syracuse
18-10 (8-7)
59th RPI
42nd SOS
2-4 vs Top 25
5-7 vs Top 50
7-8 vs Top 100
11-2 vs 100+

Butler
18-9 (7-8)
65th RPI
72nd SOS
1-5 vs Top 25
2-7 vs Top 50
6-8 vs Top 100
12-1 vs 100+

Cincinnati
20-8 (10-5)
60th RPI
89th SOS
0-3 vs Top 25
4-4 vs Top 50
6-7 vs Top 100
14-1 vs 100+

I mean, that just doesn't make any sense whatsoever. VCU and Butler's resumes are clearly, on every level, subpar to ours. They are worse than us at EVERY LEVEL. VCU isn't even in his last 4 in, they are the last team with a bye. So he has VCU 9 spots ahead of us, basically. I mean, for fvcks sake.

Lunardi's been down on Bama for a while now. I don't think he's biased because I've never noticed that about his projections in the past.

The only thing that makes sense is that he keeps looking at the roster and saying "there's no way they don't fvck it up down the stretch" - and another Mississippi State-like performance would prove him right.

I don't either, but at some point it just stops making any rational sense. I'm not even arguing we should be in, but when a team is roughly 8 spots ahead of us and is clearly behind us in all important categories it just kind of makes the whole thing seem worthless.

To be fair, at this point it pretty much is worthless when it comes to the bubble teams. Their postseason lives depend entirely on how both each team and the group as a whole performs over the next two weeks. Lunardi's guess on how that plays out really isn't any more likely to be right than mine or yours.

I just can't get too worked up over one guy's prediction on how things would shake out if the season ended right now because (a) the season doesn't end right now and (b) other respected prognosticators don't agree with him.

Agreed. I just get irritated thinking about the idea of getting left out for having the exact profile everyone said we needed in 2011 when we won a bunch of games, had a great conference record but lost OOC games.

Just gotta win out and play well in Nashville.

Yep.

Bama doesn't need a 4th and 25. Their tourney fate is entirely in their hands and it feels great.

It's also worth remembering that not a single one of us though we'd be anywhere close to that position when we were watching Dayton beat us in a game that wasn't even as close as the final 32 point difference.

Definitely didn't expect it, but it sure would be great to make the NCAAT in CAJ's first year. Lot of recruits will start paying attention and realize they have a great opportunity to play in March Madness at Bama, as well get a chance to establish something great at a school that hasn't been all that well historically in basketball.

I won't melt if we don't make the tournament, but I would be upset at the early opportunity missued because they are in position to go.
