quote:Exactly. There is a stark difference between last year's team and this year's. Better rebounding, better awareness on offense, better movement in offensive sets, better in transition. Once we get our FG% and FT% up and maintain the other improvements we will be a beastly team.
Anybody grumbling or pissed off by this team in Year 2 and wondering if things are off the rails doesn't watch basketball or understand how things work. That's just silliness.

I'm so impressed with the rebounding. I remember we complained about rebounding last year just as much as we complain about free throws this year. It was pretty bad. Was almost ranked last in the country in rebounding. I know the other day I checked and we were around #30 in the country. That's a huge jump in one year. Next year is gonna be a fun season

I know I have the benefit of hindsight, but I stand by that assertion.
Criticizing Grant for recruiting is far, but just a little absurd if it is about offering the #1 AL recruit, 2x Mr. AL BBall finalist and ESPN/247/Scout top 75 ranked player a scholarship.
Especially since you are trying to back it up as "We should have known he wouldn't be a scorer/isn't a high % shooter." Coleman scored 27.7ppg on 51%FG + 45% 3FG
If you are going to try and pull the "Well he was clearly too small". Auburn's FR PG Jared Harper, who had a lower FG% and less PPG in HS, is currently avg 13ppg 41%FG

consider this - he transferred to Samford and his other possibilities
Consider that your champion Avery Johnson JR. had only 1 offer out of TAMU which likely was connections from his dad
Coleman may not have been cut out for it, but there are a lot more things to criticize Grant about than offering Coleman

I'm not really championing him, just pointing out how he is vastly more productive right now that Coleman was at the same point in his college career.
As far as the rest, I stated my opinion which I freely admit is an opinion formed with the benefit of hindsight.
In retrospect, I probably should have left out my opinion because the point of my post was show how little Coleman brought to the team and use facts to show how AJjr - despite being a limited player himself - is a much greater contributor.

After watching Coleman and Avery play, I'd easily take Coleman. Then again, I'd hope to not have to play either significant minutes

I'm right the opposite. Give me Avery Jr.

Javian Fleming said last week he would be visiting us during the Miss St game Saturday. Here's an interview with him ? LINK

The class of '18 in state is pretty weak, so it'll be interesting to see how Bama and Auburn do. Of course AU already has that one top 15 guy from Georgia

Auburn is also in the thick of it for 5* SF Khavon Moore. We were one of his first offers + He plays for Atlanta Xpress which is an Under Armour AAU team and strong connections with Auburn.
It will be similar to Bama w Collin Sexton in that we had a head start in recruiting + great connections but we sure AF have an uphill battle holding off the UKs of the world.

If Mark Gottfried coached as hard as he does sometimes all of the time, he'd be a great coach.

Got fried has started to figure things at NC St. If he gets 20w this season, it is the most successful NCSt has been since Jimmy V in the 80s coached
Sucks that it seems like Alabama hired him too early in his career, before he was ready.

Just like Tuberville he stopped putting the work in. He would've done the same thing regardless of when he came. Several good years then a drop off at the end. I think we got out of Mark the most possible

I just don't see it.
His NC State teams look a lot like his Alabama teams did. They'll beat Duke at Cameron this week after having just lost to Wake and Georgia Tech at home.
His career conference record of at NC State coming into this season was 44-44. His career conference record at Alabama was 83-82.
NC State missed the dance last year and despite beating Duke, unless they go on a heck of a run they're in a great position to miss it again this season.
IMO, he is doing the same thing there he did here. At first, he seems to work his rear end off and has success but then for whatever reason (boredom, complacency, just plain lazy) can't sustain it - and throughout the entire process pulling some big upsets while being someone else's big upset.

Offering Coleman a scholarship isn't an indictment of Grant's recruiting/evaluation skills as much as it is his ability to develop players. That's my opinion, anyway. He could bring in decent talent. But here's the rub, IMHO: name me a player who Grant signed that blossomed, matured, and developed into a much better player under his tutelage. What they were on their recruiting video was pretty much what they were when they left Bama. Maybe some of that was poor evaluation of guys who had already peaked but maybe it was some piss poor coaching too.
As Exhibits A and B I give you Shannon Hale and Jimmie Taylor. As Exhibit C, look how Obasohon flourished in just one year under Avery.

I get star players will be young next year, but I look at how Key has contributed and is arguably our best player, I still look forward to the progress next year. Doubt we'll be where we want to be, but gives me hope that Avery will allow them to play more freely and aggressive on the offensive end.
Lot of our fans also criticize Key for his turnovers, but really miss on how good of a ball defender and how good he is at boxing out and snagging rebounds. He's already matched 57.9% of Norris' total rebounds of last year (176) in just 18 games- which led the team by the way.

Trevor Releford is the only one I can think of. Releford became a good, player his senior year. Enjoyed watching him play.
