Spring Game Video - 1st and 10 1st and 10: Emil Ekiyor, the left guard, pulls to the right to block Anoma on this play. Anoma doesn’t use any moves or use his hands or anything; he just rams his shoulder into Ekiyor’s inside shoulder. (Coach Sal should be able to correct this behavior) Not surprisingly, Ekiyor handles this and negates the rush. Anoma does keep his feet churning and tries to push past, but it’s no dice.

Anoma gets caught up by Leatherwood on his initial move and is stymied. He doesn’t give up, however, and keeps his eyes on the prize. Anoma manages to disengage with Leatherwood and goes around him. Tagovailoa has been forced back after Anfernee Jennings (#33) forced Womack into the quarterback’s lap, and Anoma reaches around and gets a hand on Tagovailoa. Since it’s A-Day, that’s enough for a sack.

Wide receiver DeVonta Smith (#6) motions in tight as well. Miller Forristall (#87) engages Anoma, and Anoma does a nice job of withstanding the initial contact. Anoma turns Forristall until the tight end is facing into his own backfield, and he holds Forristall off at arm’s length, effectively setting the edge. Najee Harris (#22) is forced back inside where he is only able to pick up a handful of yards.

Spring Game Video - 3rd and 4: 3rd and 4: Anoma is back on the left side now. He charges into Forristall’s chest and is only slowed down for a fraction of a second before shoving Forristall aside. That’s okay for the offense, though, since the pass is designed to go quickly to the other side. Anoma should be able to beat a one-on-one battle with a tight end, but I mainly included this one for the end of the play (and no, not because of Jobe). Anoma started on the complete opposite side and didn’t stop just because the ball went the other way. He kept going to the ball and was right there when Jobe popped up.

Deonte Brown (#65), the right guard, is pulling to the left and is supposed to block Anoma to help set up the shotgun counter, a play we saw often last season. Anoma, however, is already too deep for Brown; and the play doesn’t stand a chance. He wraps his arm around Najee Harris’s neck and takes him down for a loss in twirling fashion. For some reason, Christian Barmore is credited with half the tackle for loss even though he only hit Harris after the back was down on the ground. We can see Anoma should get full credit for it, though.

LINK ] Alabama Spring Position Recap: Tight end BamaOnLine - By Charlie Potter
quote:

Spring football has ended for Alabama, and Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide have entered the offseason after 15 practices. But with those said practices and UA’s annual A-Day Game still fresh on our minds, we recap what happened at each position this spring, while also looking at the past and future of the groups. We continue our spring position rewinds with the tight ends.

PRE-SPRING QUESTION

Alabama entered the spring without its two starting tight ends from the last two seasons. Hale Hentges ran out of eligibility, while Irv Smith Jr. elected to declare for the NFL draft a year early following a record-breaking junior campaign. Miller Forristall was back as the most experienced player at the position for the Crimson Tide, but beyond him was a lot of youth and inexperience.

So, the pre-spring question for the tight ends was who was going to provide depth?

WHAT WE LEARNED

One of the players at the front of the line to contribute in 2019, Kedrick James, will miss the first four games of the season as a part of his suspension by the NCAA during the College Football Playoff last year. James is a freak athlete but also dealt with minor injuries this spring. The same can be same for Major Tennison, who ended the spring season on the sideline with a concussion.

Outside of Forristall, James and Tennison, Alabama’s options were limited to redshirt freshman Michael Parker and walk-on Giles Amos. So, Saban and company called on a defensive player in outside linebacker Cameron Latu to give the tight end group enough bodies. Latu spent all 15 practices with the tight ends and showed a lot of potential on offense -- so much so that he and Forristall were with the ones in the A-Day Game, and the spring experiment caught two passes.

Miller Forristall had a good spring. Really shown a lot of leadership in what he does,” Saban said. “Cameron Latu has made a lot of progress at the position, and I certainly think could develop into being a pretty good player there. Major Tennison was having a good spring before he had an injury. Kedrick James has been out there practicing, and he’s got a chance to make a contribution.

“Everybody’s developing. Everybody’s working hard. So we just keep on keeping on, trying to make those guys better.”

QUESTIONS WE STILL HAVE

Could Latu have a new home at tight end? The redshirt freshman certainly performed well in the scrimmages and A-Day Game, and he excelled at the position in high school back in Utah. With James set to miss four games, it could stick at least until Week 5. But the experiment could be a permanent one should James and/or Tennison not make any progress during the offseason.

It will also likely depend on the development of summer enrollee Jahleel Billingsley. A native of Chicago, Billingsley will join the team after graduating from high school, and the nation’s No. 11 tight end prospect, according to the 247Sports Composite, could be a Day 1 contributor, much like Hentges, Smith, Forristall and others were when they joined the Crimson Tide program.

“We’re going to have a lot more young guys come in that hopefully can make a contribution,” Saban said. “I think of the 12 guys we have coming in, nine of them are defensive players and some of those guys are going to add depth to the team, in the secondary, up front, maybe at linebacker. So, there’s a lot of opportunity there. We’ve got a tight end coming in. That’s an area where we need some help. A couple of running backs on offense where we need help.

“We’re going get younger before we get older. We’re going to do a good job of trying to teach those guys what we can during the summer.”

editor's note:All in all, Latu may be a solution? After 15 practices at TE, not sure how comfortable he is after not practicing there for over a year (as mentioned above, he played TE in HS).

Even if James had not gotten suspended and Latu looking like a possible position change, I believe Bama would still be light in the TE position. Can't really remember when there was not a beefy TE/HB who could come in and take on the Dline/OLBs when there was a need for another blocker. (Hasn't Hentges been a steady contributor since his freshman year?)

Have wondered thru the Spring why none of the "extra" Oline guys who maybe was a bit more athletic wasnt tried at TE.

Still trying to understand Parker's weight loss...what was he thinking? (Hope it is not health related!!!)

Well, the coaches are much smarter than I, so will leave these decisions to them..

PRE-SPRING QUESTION

Alabama was tasked with replacing two starters in left tackle Jonah Williams and center Ross Pierschbacher and two key reserves in Lester Cotton and Joshua Casher this spring. The Tide had some experience returning in rising juniors Alex Leatherwood and Jedrick Wills, as well as former starters Matt Womack and Deonte Brown. The question in the 15 spring practices was which young players would step up alongside them to give UA the five best offensive linemen?

WHAT WE LEARNED

With Brown likely facing a four-game suspension to begin the 2019 season, players with little to no first-team experience like Chris Owens and Emil Ekiyor started the spring with ones. Owens was at center, while Ekiyor was at left guard. Leatherwood moved back to left tackle, while Wills and Womack manned the right tackle and right guard positions, respectively, to open the spring.

That unit was pretty consistent, outside of Womack dealing with a minor shoulder injury in the early goings and the ankle injury to Wills. True freshman behemoth Evan Neal saw some run with the first unit at left guard, and then when Wills was shut down, Womack moved over to right tackle and Brown stepped in at right guard. Coaches never want to see injuries in the spring, but the ones Alabama experienced were minor and allowed the Tide to see several O-line options.

Beyond the first group, Scott Lashley and Tommy Brown were the bookends for the twos for the duration of the spring. The interior changed over time, especially when Brown joined the ones, but one of the most consistent trios we saw during the A-Day Game was Neal at left guard, Darrian Dalcourt at center and Pierce Quick at right guard -- three of UA’s five early enrollees.

WHAT WE LEARNED ... “I’ve been really pleased with some of the young players that we have,” Saban said. “They’re obviously swimming. Probably the most difficult thing at one position that requires more knowledge and experience is maybe the offensive line. But I see ability there.

“And I’ve been pleased with Alex at tackle. Jedrick has done a good job. Chris Owens has worked hard at center and doing a good job. Matt Womack is doing a good job at guard. E has done a good job at guard. Some of the young guys -- Evan Neal, Dalcourt. I feel pretty good about that group. They’ve got to develop probably more consistency in what they’re doing, but I feel pretty good about that group and I feel good about the progress they’ve made.

“And I think the transition to Coach Flood has been seamless and seems to be working really well.”

QUESTIONS WE STILL HAVE[/b]

Which five will see on the field for the Crimson Tide’s 2019 opener against Duke? We can go ahead and pencil Leatherwood and Wills in as starters at left and right tackle. But after the pair of returning starters, Saban can put several combinations of players into the Game 1 lineup.

Womack and Brown are the most experienced players beyond Leatherwood and Wills. But much like tight end Kedrick James, Brown is likely to miss the first third of the season. So, with that in mind, let’s consider Womack the starter at right guard. Owens at center and Ekiyor at left guard could round out the rest of the first-team offensive line -- and would match up with what Pierschbacher told reporters at the Senior Bowl when asked to predict Alabama’s 2019 O-line.

That is a simple group to predict after 15 spring practices, but the questions for the summer and fall camp will be are those guys healthy and can they hold off the talented newcomers like Neal?

Enough is going to be discussed and parsed through concerning Alabama football over the next four months. Here’s what Bama Hammer thinks about the Tide’s chances exiting the spring.

Alabama football is fine. Seriously. It’s all good.

The world came tumbling down for those of us looking to celebrate a sixth national championship in the last ten seasons. It was not in the cards. Clemson came down hard on the Tide in January. Unless you were a Tiger fan (or every other college football fan on the planet) it was a horrific sight to behold.

Oh, and don’t you worry: once SEC Media Days officially kicks off the 2019 college football preseason, there will be plenty of around-the-clock coverage of how truly morbid Alabama football’s loss was that evening.

...Take heart, though, Bama Nation: they ain’t dead. They’re not six feet under. Let the rest of ’em write off the aging, haunch-challenged recipient of six national title rings. Dude still has plenty left in the tank. (If you coach cornerbacks at 67, some pelvic issues may arise. Consult your doctor.)

That being said, you don’t lose three potential first-rounders and a host of other talent and not feel the effect. Gone is Alabama football’s top overall defender, along with two each of the defense’s starting linebackers and defensive backs. Offensively, they lose two of their top three running backs, their top two tight ends and their All-American left tackle and center.

Technically speaking, these are not personnel losses from which you just “reload.”
