LINK ]Alabama Spring Position Recap: Wide receiver - BamaOnLine By Charlie Potter
quote:

WHAT WE LEARNED

Wide receiver is probably the deepest position on the Crimson Tide’s current roster.

The starters are each All-SEC -- and potentially All-America -- caliber players, but some of the younger guys showed promise during or all throughout the spring. Returning reserves Tyrell Shavers, Xavier Williams and Slade Bolden all did good things in the closed scrimmages and capped the spring with solid performances on A-Day. Williams even caught a touchdown pass.

On top of the returning players, Alabama’s lone newcomer, John Metchie, was one of the stars of the spring (sorry for the word choice, coach). The former 4-star recruit found the end zone a few times in the first two scrimmages and led both teams in receiving yards in the A-Day Game, where he received Most Valuable Player honors after the game. With Metchie and company providing quality depth, the Tide has one of its deepest receiving corps of the Saban era.

QUESTIONS WE STILL HAVE

Will those young receivers live up to the spring hype? And will they be more involved in 2019?

We know what Jeudy, Ruggs, Smith and even Waddle bring to the table. Those were Alabama’s top-four wide receivers a season ago, and that will again be the case, barring injury. But with the way the second-team receivers played this spring, will we see more of a rotation now that guys like Shavers and Williams are another year older and Metchie looked like a future star Saturday?

Consider the level of competition, Saban warned. So, this question is to be determined.

“He did a good job,” Saban said of Metchie. “But again, what’s the level of comp, you know? I mean, would he catch all of those passes if 2 or 7 or somebody’s covering him? I don’t know, aight. But when he does that, then that’s good. But relative to what he had to do today, he did an outstanding job. He made some good catches, didn’t drop the ball. He plays fast. He’s got some strength. I think this guy’s going to help us next year, and I think he’ll be a good player for us.

“I’m only saying this, aight, because you all have a tendency to make somebody a star, aight,” Saban said after a pause. “And when you do that, you create a problem for us as coaches. Do you understand that? So, can just make sure we’re just -- it is what it is and let’s not go down that road after one spring game. Does that make sense to anybody besides me?”

In the midst of his on-field coaching duties during A-Day, Nick Saban took a moment to point out a player who has seemingly gone unnoticed this spring. Talking to ESPN’s Laura Rutledge (editor's note: I met Laura in Rama Jama's on game day got a pic and autograph) in the middle of the scrimmage, the head coach looked to the sky, his eyes following a booming punt from sophomore Skyler DeLong which traveled 54 yards to the opposing 13-yard line.

“See, nobody wants to talk about the punter,” Saban chirped. “But that guy was a freshman last year, alright, and he was very, very nervous. And he’s gotten a lot better."

Don't miss: Alabama's project depth chart | Youth shines this spring

While the roughly 60,000 fans inside Bryant-Denny Stadium burst into applause following freshman kicker Will Reichard’s 43-yard field goal in the first quarter, none of DeLong’s four punts drew much of a reaction. Instead, the former three-star recruit quietly averaged 47.5 yards per attempt, sailing two of his punts 50 or more yards while twice pinning his opponents inside the 20.

DeLong is fine with the silent treatment. After all, it beats the moans and groans that accompanied many of his punts during his tumultuous freshman year. Coming to Alabama as the No. 2 punter in the nation according to ChrisSailerKicking.com, DeLong failed to live up to the hype, averaging just 34.44 yards on 16 punts. After seven frustrating games, he was eventually replaced by walk-on Mike Bernier who severed as the Crimson Tide’s punter for the rest of the season.

Alabama’s struggles at kicker generated the majority of the attention last season as the Crimson Tide missed a shocking nine extra point attempts. However, the punting situation was arguably worse. Alabama ranked No. 128 out of 130 Division I teams as DeLong and Bernier combined to average just 35.76 yards on 42 punts.

Following his demotion, many wrote off DeLong’s future at Alabama. Reichard, who came to Tuscaloosa as one of the most celebrated kicking prospects in years, also punted in high school and was heralded as a potential do-it-all man for the Crimson Tide. However, when both players shared punting duties over the weekend, it was DeLong who demonstrated the slightly more powerful leg.

“People should believe in development,” Saban said. “Everybody wants an immediate outcome instead of focusing on what you need to do to get an outcome.”

Last season, Saban chalked up much of DeLong’s struggles to lack of confidence. The head coach stated that the young punter was “a lot better in practice” and vowed to provide the support and development needed to have success on the big stage.

Six months later, that patience seems to be paying off.

“He’s got more confidence,” Saban said. “We work with him. We work on his drop, his speed in getting rid of the ball more quickly. So now he’s just become a little more consistent. So, hopefully, we can carry that into the season.”

Despite DeLong’s solid A-Day performance, Alabama’s punting competition will likely linger on into the fall. It’s worth noting that Reichard attempted a team-high six punts over the weekend, averaging a respectable 42.2 yards per attempt with a long of 47 yards. Bernier is also still on the roster but has submitted his name in the NCAA’s transfer portal.

In order to regain his starting position, DeLong will need to convince his head coach he can maintain this level of play on a consistent basis. That will likely require a few more big punts in situations with a bit more heightened pressure. Nonetheless, DeLong did his job over the weekend. And even though no one’s talking about it, his efforts didn’t go unnoticed.

LINK ]After freshman struggles, Alabama punter has ‘gotten a lot better’ - AL.COM By Matt Zenitz | mzenitz@al.com
quote:

During one of his spring game conversations with ESPN’s Laura Rutledge, Nick Saban looked away and watched a Skyler DeLong punt, his eyes following along and tracking a ball that was eventually fair caught at the 13-yard line after traveling 54 yards in the air.

Saban was pleased, clearly happy with Alabama’s sophomore punter who has taken a step forward and improved after struggling and losing his job as a freshman last season.

“See, nobody wants to talk about the punter,” Saban told Rutledge after the 54-yard punt. “But that guy was a freshman last year, alright, and he was like very, very nervous. And he’s gotten a lot better."

DeLong’s numbers during the spring game were much better than his numbers from last year when he averaged just 34.4 yards per punt and was benched after the sixth game of the season.

Working with the first-team offense’s team, DeLong punted four times during the spring game, averaged 47.5 yards per punt and left Saban and the coaching staff feeling even more optimistic about his ability to handle the Crimson Tide’s punting job.

“He’s got more confidence,” Saban told Rutledge. “We work with him. We worked on his drop, his speed in getting rid of the ball more quickly. So now he’s just become a little more consistent. So hopefully we can carry that into the season.”

Seems I was a bit quick on the trigger when I thought it was time to drop this thread... everyday there is more "Spring" related articles and thought provoking comments. Will give it another week or so, then put it to sleep.

LINK ]Alabama football’s coach behind the scenes AL.COM - By Joseph Goodman | jgoodman@al.com
quote:

There were some puzzled looks around the state when Alabama coach Nick Saban rehired Steve Sarkisian to be the Crimson Tide’s offensive coordinator in January.

One important person inside Alabama’s sphere of influence undoubtedly loved the move, though.

Galu Tagovailoa, the father of starting quarterback Tua and his younger brother, freshman backup Taulia, has had a strong relationship with Sarkisian dating back to Tua’s youthful days in Hawaii. With Sarkisian back in Tuscaloosa after two years in the NFL, his longtime friend, Galu, was a regular during practices this spring, according to sources inside Alabama athletics. Galu even worked with his sons at times.

And why not? No one knows them better.

Galu, a self-styled quarterbacks guru, is not officially on staff, but the father of Tua and Taulia has had a growing impact at Alabama over the last few months. He’s acting as a quarterbacks consultant behind the scenes for the offense, and is a consistent presence around the program. For the next few years, few others around Alabama football will have the power to affect the program quite like the Tagovailoas’ father.

More than likely, it will go mostly unnoticed.

With former Alabama quarterbacks coach Dan Enos in Miami and former offensive coordinator Mike Locksley in Maryland, Sarkisian has taken on the responsibility of both coaches. Then there’s Galu, who is providing some help after developing both of his sons into elite quarterback prospects.

Galu was mostly on the periphery of last season, which was one of the most successful offensively in the history of Alabama football.

Tua was a finalist for the Heisman Trophy as a sophomore, won the Maxwell Award and was named the Walter Camp Player of the Year. Behind him, Alabama’s offense produced enormous numbers.

Tua set Alabama’s single-season records for passing touchdowns (43), passing yards (3,966) and passer efficiency rating (199.4). Considering that success, most assumed in early January that quarterbacks coach Dan Enos would get a promotion to offensive coordinator after Mike Locksley left for Maryland. Enos’ starting quarterback, after all, had the best season statistically in the history of the school, but not only that, Alabama’s backup drastically improved, and then led the famous comeback against Georgia in the SEC championship game. Enos didn’t get the job, however, and instead left for the University of Miami.

Enter Sarkisian, who has been gifted one of the most potentially explosive offenses in the history of college football.

Tua is back, and focused like only a loser of the national championship can be.

All the five-star receivers are back, including the Fred Biletnikoff Award winner, Jerry Jeudy.

The running back corps, collectively, is the best in the country. Najee Harris was the No.1-rated running back prospect in the country in 2017. Trey Sanders, the No.1-rated running back prospect of 2019, says he is going to win the Heisman as a freshman.

The offensive linemen are future pros.

Basically, all Sarkisian has to do is not screw this thing up.

Back when he was at USC, Sarkisian was one of the first coaches to offer Tua a scholarship. USC eventually fired Sarkisian for substance-abuse problems (October 2015), but he landed on his feet when Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin offered him a job as an analyst in September of 2016. Tua followed Sarkisian to Alabama in January of 2017.

Sarkisian has been following Kiffin throughout his career, but Sarkisian’s connections to Hawaii long predate Tua.

Sarkisian was coached by Norm Chow at BYU, and Chow is a quarterback-coaching legend in Hawaii. Throughout his career, Chow coached quarterback stars Jim McMahon, Steve Young, Philip Rivers, and Heisman winners Ty Detmer, Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart, among others

Tua’s Heisman campaign fell apart in 2018 due to injuries, but he’s the favorite for the award going into the season. He wasn’t sharp in the spring game, and struggled in the national championship, but his body of work suggests there is potential there for greatness.

The schedule is more difficult in 2019, but that won’t affect the expectations. Anything less than a national championship will be considered a failed season. With Tua comfortable and familiar with the offensive coordinator, and his father, Galu, close by for support, the environment for another record-breaking season should be taking shape for Alabama.

This is the season Sarkisian and Tagovailoas always envisioned together.

As far as Tua not being Sharp in the CFBCG and this spring. It is probably the two best D's he will ever face until the CFBCG this year. And let's all remember the DROPPED balls he had in both games. Everyone is quick to praise the WR's/TE's both last year and this year; however, I don't seem to hear much about dropped opportunities. (Tho, I could be mistaken, dont really think I am). Had the dropped, very catchable balls, not happened, I wonder where the conversations would be?
I do hope that Daddy Tag will be an answer to the misconception about the BAMA O / QB and the OLine will jell into a rock wall to protect the QB, giving him all the time he needs and more importantly keep him on his feet and free from harm. I was somewhat concerned about the Oline during the A-day game; but, my wife keeps reminding me that they were playing out of position and this is most likely the best Dline/LB group they will face all year.

Eyabi Anoma thought about leaving Alabama. The former 5 star, #4 overall recruit went so far as to enter the transfer portal. Fortunately, a day later, Anoma decided to stay at Alabama and withdrew his name from the portal, arguably the biggest recruiting win on National Signing Day for Nick Saban and the staff.

Anoma had played sparingly as a true freshman, but his talent flashed and was enough to earn him SEC All-Freshman honors. With the loss of Christian Miller and Jamey Mosley, Anoma, who has just three years of football beyond the youth level under his belt, is in line for a larger role in 2019.

A little shove and he’s too far upfield to affect Tua Tagovailoa, who got the ball out quickly anyway.
