I've seen a few guys in this thread mention Davis but why would he give up a head coaching position to be an assistant even if his pay is significantly increased?

Could not agree more. I think AJ would be a hell of a consolation prize for losing GM.

I like how everyone on the rant are suddenly experts on hiring a basketball coach.

This is the SECOND meeting with Johnson. That's the good news. Now for the bad. Battle learned his lesson and he has a plan B this time....Steve Prohm.

Let's hope we don't need to resort to our plan C. Hopefully we can lock down Johnson by the end of the weekend.

The only worry about hiring AJ is that he could bolt to the NBA at some point. At least that would mean he was likely successful here, so chasing a guy like GM would be easier to pull off.

Is this directed at me?

Byrant made that point in the thread on the rant. I think if we get AJ for two or three years, and he recruits at a level which I think he's capable of, we would be in much better position to go land a big fish.

No, referring to the fans from the other fanbases saying that they'd be happy if we went with Avery, Prohm would be a better hire, etc. Typical rant bullshite.

Ahh gotcha.
It's tRant, they are required by law to be negative towards Alabama

If AJ is such a great coach, why can't he get a gig in the NBA?

I don't know, I'm not a National Basketball Association executive.

I would love Johnson just to see how he would interact with the players and fans on the court. I feel like he would bring a LOT more energy than Grant ever could.

The Pelicans fans on the Rant seem to think he was next in line for their head coaching job.
ETA: They could be trolling though.

Because the NBA is changing. 75% of the coaches hired since 2012 are first timers.
Plus who knows how much his son finishing high school may have effected that. He may have turned down some jobs.

I'm just trying to think of a reason that a career NBA guy would want to step down to college and deal with the challenges that it brings. All the rules, recruiting, etc.
If he is coming here to revive his career, why does he have to do that?
FWIW I am not against hiring AJ. I just find it puzzling why he would be interested in our job.

Complete control, good pay, a new challenge. I mean I don't know if that's actually why he'd do it but it makes sense.

Do you think he would be worth the pay that we were offering GM?

I really wouldnt like the hire I would rather have Prohm. Avery Johnson won at Dallas when Dirk was great. Has never coached college ball. Id rather have a proven college coach even if it isn't a huge name.

Maybe a little less than that but not enough to where he feels we've low balled him.
