People only associate the medical school as UAB's because the main campus is in Birmingham.

To be fair ERAS doesn’t list out the full names of some programs. People also associate it with UAB because the full name is now University of Alabama at Birmingham Heersink School of Medicine. The Huntsville campus also uses the UAB logo and the website for all 3 campuses goes to UAB’s website.

You’re right it all falls under the UA system but it’s kind of its own thing. Last I heard UA does pay directly some of the costs associated with it while UAB covers the rest.

It's the University of Alabama School of Medicine.

UAB basically stole it from UA and sold the naming rights but it's still the University of Alabama School of Medicine.

I'll fight people over this...lol

I get it. I’m just saying the common perception especially for people that are not connected to UA, think of it as UAB’s SOM and UAB’s health system.

Also and MUCH more importantly, from what I understand much of the revenue ($3.5B with $340M net) from the SOM and its massive health system (that’s grabbing up every hospital and clinic around them) go to UAB not UA. UA only gets a smaller portion of it back from the system wide funneling.

UA should have never ceded so much control over.

UAB gets the advantages of research dollars and paper prestige from the medical center, not UA. It is bad for UA that UAB exists. We should have killed more than their football program in the teens, we should have killed the whole separate entity and made it directly fall under UA again.

Yes, let's chase that sweet govt money from an institution that can't even sell its own treasuries nowadays

I hear you but dollars ends up being used in some rankings as a leading indicator for future research output. Also, in medicine there are more significant private research investment options. So it isn’t all government teat sucking.

That is a good point, but Residency and Fellowship are separate from the Medical School. You're still applying to University of Alabama Medical Center. I don't recall ERAS being used for medical school applications, but that was now 7 years ago for me and I've had to commit more important things to memory.

UA should not have ceded so much control. UAB and St. Vincent's declined in quality once Ascension took over. I hope for the sake of the city that the quality at both hospitals increases.

Also, as bad as Ascension was, they pale in comparison to what Tenet was doing to the Brookwood system.

We’re not talking about residency or fellowship programs. Those can be operated by anybody, school or independent organization. We’re talking specifically about UAB’s school of medicine. UA does not oversee that in any way.

You’re right about it being only for residencies and fellowships but that part about the University of Alabama Med Center only really applies to ERAS these days. I suspect it’s because they didn’t bother to change it

But if you’re a med student or resident and you look up one of the programs for residency or fellowship you have to go to UAB’s site with it saying UAB medicine at top and Heersink SOM under which ever program. Point is UA doesn’t get much recognition at all

So much revenue, grants, and prestige goes directly to UAB over UA. I don’t know the full details of it, but what a giant mess up to let that happen

hopefully no woke nonsense baggage.

Agreed!

However, I'm hopeful I think UA has too much influence from people who oppose the liberal disease to let one of them become President.

It's not like Stuart Bell was Hulk hogan, but that video did seem very feminine, so I get the worry but I think it'll be hard to mess up the momentum UA has and has had the last 10 years.

And to all the down-voters.. LMK how that communications degree is treating you!
