I copied the below excerpt from an article earlier this year ...

Saban spells it out very simply. The conjunction “and” is used to augment one’s draft status, while “but” detracts from it. All things equal, “and” will elevate a player’s stock because he is a great teammate, a college graduate, possesses an incredible work ethic, etc. “But” will take away from a player. He is a bad teammate, he has a drug charge, he was in a domestic violence incident, etc.

I know he tells our players this probably every year but this year it really is bearing out in my mind.

Player A above: A=AND or let's name him say Anderson perhaps. Will Anderson probably fits this player more than any other player in Sabans's tenure at Alabama. Plays hard, practices hard, puts in film study, is a leader in action and words. Holds everyone accountable.

Player B above: B=BUT we will call him Billingsley for this example. Jahleel Billingsley has so much talent but I wonder if he still hasn't grasped the concept above.

I fully admit I do not know if he is an issue in the locker room or has bad practice habits or takes plays off but I have such high hopes for what he can give us on the field and I truly hope he turns into a Player A soon. Preferably before the 10th because I believe he could be a real difference maker with Metchie out.
