Bama had excellent depth for most of the Bryant years so that would have been helpful. Bama beat USC in 1977 and Cal beat Bama in 1978. I was told by someone who was frineds with an Alabama offensive player (1978) that a number of the defensive players were hung over when the game was played. I don't know if that was true but they certainly played like it.
