People wanted a home run hire. The problem is our coordinators have rarely ever been home run hires.

Major Applewhite? Hardly a big name when he was hired. Jim McElwain? We all had to google his name to find out where he was coming from. Doug Nussmeier? Same thing. Lane Kiffin was a name but it was mostly associated with ridicule and shame when he arrived in Tuscaloosa. Brian Daboll? That was a hire out of left field as was the promotion of Mike Locksley once Daboll returned to the NFL. Steve Sarkisian was also a name but his reputation had suffered over the intervening years due to chronic alcoholism. Bill O'Brien is probably the biggest name he's ever hired at OC due to his long stint in the NFL and that didn't work out the best for us.

Same thing with defensive coordinators. Who the hell had ever heard of Kirby Smart when he took over our defense in 2009? He was not a big name by stretch of the imagination but look now what he has become. Jeremy Pruitt was the only "sure thing" hire Saban has ever made at the DC position. Tosh Lupoi and Pete Golding were just as obscure as Kirby Smart was when they first arrived. They just didn't turn out as elite as Smart did.

Agree with most of your post.

It's hard to believe that Grantham turned down the Bama DC job for the DL job under Joe Woods and Dennis Allen (who may be gone after next season). Unless it would have been some kind of special arrangement that meant he would be out after one year or when Pruitt became available.

I think CNS told Grantham he wasn't gonna promote him to the on-field coaching staff.

I wish these want to be coaches would not post dumb
statements. Nick Saban has given Alabama a run in history
like no other coach. I think we should trust him(Nick) instead of all these Finebaum listeners. We need to remember
the late 1980's, the late 1990's and early 2000's. Be
thankful we still have the G.O.A.T. for several more years.

I agree.
