Do you remember that time Alabama held tryouts for QB1 against a Top 20 opponent?

Blake Barnett and Jalen Hurts were competing for the starting job back in 2016. So Saban decided to let them win it by having them both play against #20 (and future Rose Bowl champion) USC in the first game of the season.

Damn that team was good. One of the best to not win it all.

AJ McCarron won the QB battle the week before against Kent State. He and Philip Sims would play two or three drives and then sit to let the other have a turn. McCarron played the entire game against Penn State.

You could have won twenty bucks off me on that one- could have sworn they dueled into Penn State.

McCarron started the Tide's first game against Kent State but had to share the job with Phillip Sims. This week he was on his own. He gave coach Nick Saban no reason to make a change until the game was out of reach.

Funny how the mind works... after reading the below quote from CNS now I'm recalling that I was angry about him refusing to name AJ the starter after the Penn State game, and somehow that turned into erroneously believing they were actually still battling for the job. I guess it was over ten years ago. lol

quote:

Saban, of course, was not about to declare McCarron the unchallenged No. 1.

"We still have a competition at the position," Saban said. "We really do feel like we have two very good players and we want both guys to continue to develop. But I thought AJ did a nice job today."
