On December 29, 1982, Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant ended his coaching career. In his 25 years at Alabama, he won 323 games and coached his teams to six national titles, thirteen conference championships and 15 bowl game wins. Bryant passed away 29 days later on January 26, 1983.
Remember watching that final game against Illinois, and being glad coach Bryant went out a winner.
Bama fans are blessed to have had TWO (!) GOAT coaches.

I remember we barely pulled that game out, Jeremiah Castille was a hero that day. I was deathly afraid we might lose that game. I was thinking there was no way our players were going to let Coach Bryant go out with a loss and sure enough Castille came through.

Reading this excerpt about the game brings up a smile :

Defensive back Jeremiah Castille was named the game's MVP after intercepting three passes from Tony Eason. Despite giving up 444 total offensive yards from Illinois, 423 passing yards by Eason, Alabama won the game 21–15.

The Tide intercepted seven passes in this game, four from Eason and three from backup quarterback Kris Jenner. Jenner was in the game for only three plays, all of which came after Eason had to leave the game after taking a hard hit from the Alabama defense. On all three plays, Jenner attempted a pass which was intercepted.

Bear Bryant finished with a collegiate record 323 wins 85 losses and 17 ties.
